Community Information

housing healthcare gun control environment affordable

My community is the recently designated Historic Carver Village. From here we have quick access to downtown Savannah and all surrounding areas which are accessible via highway or city streets. While it is an urban area, most people own cars. Others use various forms transportation that includes motorized cycles, bicycles, or city buses. This is a college town and our community reflects pride in this distinction with many individuals having at least a Bachlors' degree, or have attended college at one time or another. Technical schools are also big here. We also have many churches that many families are proud to be members of for many years.

Savannah is full of history with some of it being good to remember and some of it bad. However, as a whole it has earned the title of being the Vacation Spot of the South with millions of people flocking here year round. Carver Village has its own unique historical cultural place in history as it was the first Black subdivision in the US. For many years it has been a Black community, but now it is experiencing great diversification as a new value is being placed on the property and surrounding areas with the present construction of the new Savannah Sports Arena right at its entrance. Many lifelong residents are now being pestered by property buyers who are seeing it as an investment.

Carver Village is a middle class community with a mix of those who are on the lower (many renters) and middle class scale. We are also experiencing new warehouses that are being built along a new rail line along with the influx of a barrage of big tractors pulling very long trailers of merchandise. It is no longer the community that was envisioned by its founders. As we experience such growth, it is hard to imagine what the area will be like in 5 to 10 years, and the environmental issues that will threaten our community.

My community needs to be kept together in the same district that it is now. We are able to elect people who share our policy concerns and those of nearby communities. We do not want to be divided! We also need better healthcare. What happens when you seek healthcare with a $700 per month salary and the Health Marketplace decides that you can afford to pay $467 per month for health insurance? Does that make any sense?
