Community Information

There are several store streets in this residential neighborhood. Most are small independent stores or franchises of larger supermarkets as well as pharmacy chains and a few independent pharmacies. Flatbush Development Corporation, People in Need and Pakistani-Amarican Youth Services are nonprofits serving the community.

Brooklyn college is nearby and could be considered in the neighborhood, and for this mapping, I have included it. In addition there are a number of storefront and more traditional churches, mosques and synagogues to serve this diverse community of South Asian, Hispanic, Haitian, West-Indian immigrants and long-time Brooklyn residents.

My community is centered around an express subway stop at Newkirk Plaza which provides convenient transport to Midtown Manhattan as well as to public swimming beaches. The Plaza is a pedestrian shopping street adjacent to the station. Residents span the economic spectrum from solid middle-class homeowners and apartment dwellers, working poor, to marginally employed and food- and housing-insecure residents.

The good housing stock has led to an influx of more affluent homeowners over the past 10 or so years. This has improved the commercial activity of the neighborhood, but also placed much of the housing out of the reach of some long-term residents.
