Buses are easily accessible, as are taxis. The subways and railroads are about a mile away. LaGuardia Airport is also located in East Elmhurst.

East Elmhurst is a diverse community in northwest queens. It has historic landmarks, such as the former home of famous American musician, Louis Armstrong. There is a large Muslim population with people from Egypt, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and other Middle East and Southeast Asian nations. There is also a strong Latin American community, namely Ecuadorian, El Salvadorian, and Colombian. These groups have a grown and spread from neighboring Jackson Heights. There is even a Colombian heritage parade every summer. Some pockets of older European immigrants still remain, particularly people from Greece. The Greek and Egyptian communities are also very significant in neighboring Astoria and spread.

East Elmhurst is a working and middle class neighborhood. It is mainly residential with some shopping and business centers along 31st Ave and Northern Blvd. LaGuardia airport is located in the East Elmhurst zip codes, as are several airport hotels and motels. Export/import and logistics companies such as UPS, FedEx and Amazon also have warehouses and fleets of trucks housed near the airport. Some airport motels have been converted into family or men's shelters in recent years. In 2021, Hurricane Ida caused major flooding in low lying areas. Many homes were damaged and at least 3 people died. Many streets have seen improvements since and the city continues that work today.

Hurricane Ida brought attention to the housing and infrastucture needs of East Elmhurst and surrounding neighborhoods. There are still many illegal basement apartments which become dangerous during a flood. There is also a need for more grocery stores with better quality produce. One store shut down this year and that left many households, particularly the elderly, without a market within walking distance. The elderly need more resources to help live safely in their homes. Many are not aware of the resources which already exist and may not speak English
