Community Information

transportation housing environment

My community is the town of Boone, NC, home to Appalachian State University. We are an active outdoors community including hiking, cycling, climbing.

Boone combines the traditions of rural Appalachia and the influx of ideas and changes brought by students and professors at the University, which are not always in sync. The beauty of the mountains links most folks together

The University, the tourism industry, and the Appalachian Regional Health Care System are the primary employers in Boone. There is a tension between wanting to preserve the natural beauty and small town feel of the area and the need to build more housing for residents as well as students, especially affordable housing.
