Community Information

South Mountain Park runs east west and is used for hiking, mountain bike riding and picnicking. My community spans from 35th Ave to 24th St, anchored on the west by Cesar Chavez HS and Park which includes a regional library, golf course, doggie park, soccer & baseball fields. Mostly fast food restaurants. Very little health care. A large number of charter schools and a few public grade schools. On the east end is S. Mtn CC, an LA Fitness and a retail center containing a Fry's and Target.

My community is very mixed with a decent share of Latino, African American, and White people. It was traditionally more rural and in the last 15 years has had a lot of new growth. There are a wide variety of churches, one mosque and one temple. There are no synagogues in the area. Most of the new schools are charter schools. Many of the independent restaurants are small mom and pop Mexican food carnicerias and taquerias.

South Mountain Park anchors the south side of my neighborhood. As you drive north to downtown, there are a lot of industrial facilities along the Salt River and an enormous old landfill at 19th Avenue. There are very few bike lanes which makes any commuting or running of errands by bicycle nearly impossible.

This is a rapidly growing area that has a lot of infrastructure needs as well as a lot more retail, employment and entertainment opportunity. It is a lower to middle class area with a few higher end neighborhoods. The agriculture is rapidly being developed and the development needs to be done wisely.
