Asheville is economically tied to tourism .. to a fault. In recent years its population has grown significantly, but the focus of those in power continue to give priority to tourists. Without a robust, healthy, affordable local economy, tourism will suffer. Those who work here cannot afford to live here. Economic and social inequality has contributed to greater crime, especially violent crime.
