Community Information

housing healthcare voting rights elderly environment

My community is made of people I have loved all my life. I was born here, and left for New York after completion of High School. Many years later I returned to my family's homestead and joined many other relatives who still live very close to me. We are united in the bonds of faith, of family and of friends who feel like they are family. We look after each other. Our main socializing comes from going to church, and sharing meals at each other's homes. We love each other, and our community. And we want our district to remain as it is in the Redistricting process. This way, the progress we have already made will continue well into the future. We want to vote for leaders who are for us.

My church is historical. It is 152 years old, and I am a member of the descents of the people who founded it. We have a shared history with other families that have the same experience.

Most of the people who live in my community are retirees who have retired comfortably. However, there is a diverse number of individual families that are still working and raising children. In the past, this was an area that produced a large volume of cotton with many of the residents working as cotton pickers. That is no longer the case. The cotton fields are still abundantly present, but huge machinery is doing the work. Those who work, are doing so as professionals in nearby industries. This is a sign of real growth.

My community needs a senior citizen's center. The nearest county center is 18 miles away in the city of Sylvania. This is great for those who live in the city, but what about those who live in the forgotten rural communities? We also need closer access to grocery stores that provide fresh produce. Dollar General does not fulfill that need, and neither does the very high priced farm markets that charge big city prices. And how about an Urgent Care facility? We want our district kept as it is so we can continue to work on making things better.
