Community Information

gentrification parks environment hiking outdoor activities

My community has strong ties to the local mountain environment. Far more than those who only arrive for a few ski runs in winter, we live and breathe the air at 8,000+ feet, and want to see the forests, mountains, and waters preserved for their own sake.

The primary driver of the economy in my community is highly seasonal tourism. While tourism brings prosperity to our towns, it also brings problems regarding how to balance the allure for (wealthy, usually) tourists with the needs of the people who run the towns and resorts.

Summit County has a powerful county identity. Moreso than nearly any other county I'm aware of, locals take pride in being from Summit and when asked where they're from, will usually respond with the county rather than the particular town. Though I very much doubt it would be, this powerful county unity should not be divided.
