Community Information

transportation LGBT+ housing voting rights diversity

My community is the Lower Avenues. We are mostly single family homes, mostly slightly older families with college age or adult kids who've moved, but mixed with younger families who rent and some college students in apartment buildings.

My community, and the populace of Salt Lake City in general, is grossly underrepresented in the Utah State Legislature. Decades of cynical gerrymandering by the legislature has divided the more liberal votes up so carefully that despite being barely over half the state, republicans (which in Utah means Mormons) make up 75% of our state level elected officials. This gives them a supermajority which allows them to even override extremely popular public propositions such as medical marijuana and medicaid expansion with no concern about repercussions.

We value access to public transit and bicycle paths, since parking is at a premium here and we want to reduce our impact. More access to transit especially for the west side of the city and other historically underserved neighborhoods is a high priority to us. We want to be better connected to our west side neighbors.

No one I know feels represented by our state legislature. We know it's been gerrymandered to within an inch of its life. Our federal Senatorial elections are also a total joke. the fact that Mike Lee is supposed to represent Salt Lake city is utterly disgusting and he's a national embarrassment.
