Community Information

I live in the Avenues, which is pretty cohesive as a neighborhood-- everything north of South Temple and east of State street. There is the LDS hospital, memory grove park, trails on 18th Ave, and the dog park at Lindsey Gardens and the SLC Cemetery. There's also a central grocery store-- the Smiths on 6th Ave.

I like that my community has a mix of single family homes and apartments. People here tend to be older, and almost all the houses here are older unreinforced masonry buildings (URMs) at risk of collapsing in a big earthquake (although they're really beautiful.) House size tends to be smaller, with very limited yard space, so everyone relies a lot on parks and shared outdoor spaces. The area is predominately white, and not LDS. There are several older churches in the area.

I think most people work downtown. Living on an incline, the upper Aves is usually much less affected by Utah's winter inversions. But the lower Aves gets the smog.

Housing prices are crazy expensive so people who live here in apartments can never afford to buy a house in the area. As I said earlier, dealing with URMs and taking care of older buildings is a unifying concern.
