Community Information

transportation housing healthcare education affordable

My community is located in a rural area. Amenities, such as shopping malls, fast food restaurants, are limited. We currently have one grocery story in each of the two incorporated towns, Cuthbert and Shellman. Public transportation is non-existent. Our hospital closed in October 2020; therefore healthcare options are limited. A plus for the community is that we have Andrew College and Albany Technical College (a satellite campus that offers adult education and more).

My community is composed of about 65% African American and the remainder Caucasian and other. We have a very small Hispanic populations also. Most identify as Baptist and Methodist. We also have some that identify as Jehovah Witnesses. Agriculture plays a huge role in the community.

Highways 82 and 27 intersect throughout Randolph County. We have a unique advantage to attract tourist because of the unique history of the county. Agriculture plays a huge role in the community. Logging is also a huge industry. About 1/4 of the population does not have a high school diploma or GED. The number that hold a bachelor degree or higher is about the same. We struggle with to convey the message of education. In a global economy, it is imperative that we develop a skilled workforce in our to grow our community long term.

It is important to have representation that understand the concerns and needs of small rural communities. We need a not only a voice but also an advocate.
