Community Information

In this part of New Bedford, in the South End, people socialize and gather at the beach, at Hazelwood Park, at the Harbor Walk and Cove Walk. Immigrants' Assistance Center is a well-known social service and community organization in this area. The County St and Brock Ave commercial areas are prominent in this area. It is a densely populated neighborhood with double and triple deckers and older housing stock. It is a heavily immigrant neighborhood.

In this area of the city, it is heavily immigrant with older generations of Portuguese immigrants and new Latino immigrants from both Central America and the Caribbean (ex. Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic). It is by the waterfront, near the South Terminal with many seafood processing companies and much commercial activity. Many former mills are now converted to other multi-uses, but some still remain as smaller manufacturing are open.

The seafood and service industries are prominent employers in this area of the city. Some smaller factories still employ area residents. As the areas is near the sea, rising sea levels and flooding are concerns.

This area of New Bedford has had no representation of the Latino community in city government, and their needs are not adequately addressed or reflected in the City government. There has been a lack of city services in these neighborhoods. This area is a little less walkable and more car-dependent, than other parts of the city. Transportation is an ongoing need.
