Greater Piney Grove Baptist Church is a physical bastion in our community and frames our community to the West. Our community also hosts the East Lake Foundation communities, the Drew Charter School campuses, and the East Lake YMCA. There is a public park, two public libraries nearby (on Candler Road and in East Atlanta Village), and several senior living communities. There is also a large Publix supermarket that serves our community and the surrounding areas. MARTA bus lines run through our community and route to the East Lake MARTA train station. There is also an independent K-12 school called the Mohammed School in our community and an Islamic Center where services are held on Fridays.

I am relatively new to my community (7 years) and am not as aware of its cultural or historic background as others. I do know that in the 1970, the Atlanta Housing Authority opened East Lake Meadows, a 650-unit public housing project that housed a generation of Atlanta's low-income, primarily African-American residents."Initially praised for the spacious units and new construction, East Lake Meadows quickly became known as 'little Vietnam,' a moniker that was intended to capture the rampant crime and violence that overwhelmed the community. Shoddy construction and a lack of funding left the project and surrounding landscape in disrepair and led to a rapid decline in the quality of life."

My community is gentrifying quickly from its previous demographic of family-owned (often multi-generationally), 2/1 homes on the edge of City of Atlanta (DeKalb County). Developers are buying the homes and renovating them into 3/2 and 4/3's, selling for upwards of $500k. Density is also picking up with luxury apartment and housing communities being developed at either end of the neighborhood, the residents of which are not reflective of the existing community.

Our community is currently a mix of generations, income levels, ethnicities, and cultures, but it is quickly skewing with the increase in development. The City of Atlanta cuts jaggedly through our community with the remainder of the community set outside the City limits in Unincorporated DeKalb. There has been talk of incorporating our community into the City of Atlanta, but this has not yet happened.
