My focus community where it feels like the opening for the tale of two cities, “It was the best of time and the worse of time." The apparent contrast comes once you past the end of the second avenue subway. On one side you see rows of high-rise luxury apartments, countless museums, and well-groomed parks. On the other side there is rows of NYCHA buildings, poor infrastructure and heaps of garbage. Between the two the main gathering is our main street of the district where there is a movie theater, target and book store.
My community is split between historically affluent WASP demographic and a historically known for a rotating community that is immigrant based from Eastern European to Italian to Puerto-Rican to know broad Latin based that is slowly being gentrified by CUNY and Columbia.
My community is along the East River so we do have a higher environmental concern in regards to water and we have two energy plants along the highway. Our air/light pollution is not ideal either but it’s not one of the deterrent to live in the neighborhood. On one side the main employment is white collar mainly real estate, wall street or general big business and on the other side it is a more blue collar and service worker jobs
Both parts of the community main concern are public safety. Although majority are happy that the second avenue subway was built there has been a rise in homeless that loiter around the more affluent part of the neighborhood. As compared to the other side there is a particular area by a subway line that is often refer to as zombie-land for the loitering of drug dealers and addicts that loiter nearby.
