The South Bank

Danger: REPORT Jan. 30, 2021
Population: 4655
Cultural or Historical Interests
We're a demographic melting pot: whites, blacks, straight, gay, couples, parents, singles.
Community Activities and Services
My community is served by a public library, two public elementary schools, a couple of private schools, and a smattering of bars, restaurants and churches.
Economic or Environmental Interests
My community shares proximity to the James River, which provides drinking water and recreation, and is within walking distance to five beautiful parks. We are economically diverse, counting CEO's, professional people, artisans, tradesmen and day laborers among our residents.
Community Needs and Concerns
We lack quality public schools. Richmond city schools are among the worst in Virginia. Parents are forced to send their children to private schools or to relocate to the surrounding counties where schools are markedly better.

Ashland, VA
Richmond Map Collection
Danger: REPORT Jan. 29, 2021
Population: 11477
Economic or Environmental Interests
The Ashland community is split by a train track and I-95. We are concerned about environmental and economic impacts of widening the railway within Ashland and sprawl. There are a vast number of vacant buildings in developed areas yet, woods are being destroyed to continue to develop outward.
Community Needs and Concerns
Although we are part of Hanover County and their public schools, Ashland residents are more urban and lean democratic. We are part of a solidly republican district that does not align with our environmental and social values and our votes seem to get lost.

Cary Elementary Community
Richmond Map Collection
Danger: REPORT Jan. 16, 2021
Population: 31099
Cultural or Historical Interests
Our community is grappling with our long history and entanglement with the confederacy as well as Richmond's role in the slave trade. Our community is strongly invested in dismantling false narratives and moving away from Jim Crow era monuments and story-telling.
Community Activities and Services
Recreating along the James River and the parks in it's vicinity, such as Belle Island, Chimborazoo, Petronius Jones and Byrd Park area common past time for our community. These parks are a popular place to meet up with friends and often host farmer's markets and other events. The Carytown commercial district is a popular place for our community to shop and eat.
Community Needs and Concerns
Richmond is unfortunately, very economically and racially segregated. It would be very easy to carve the Richmond metro area into multiple districts that "just so happen" to divide citizens by race. Any district borders that split Richmond, Henrico county and northern Chesterfield county into more than one district would be highly suspect and would split up a community.
