Community Activities and Services
This community is composed primarily of blue collar working folks with a large number of both retirees and military personnel.
Community Needs and Concerns
This community of interest has many transportation needs especially with regards to the issues of HRBT and I-64, the need for modernization of city water and sewage pipes, and economic development. There are a lot of economically stressed areas with a lot of empty storefronts or otherwise shut down businesses.

Danger: REPORT Sept. 20, 2021
Population: 137961
internet housing seasonal employment rural childcare
Economic or Environmental Interests
We have a strong farming/tree farming/fishing/watermen tradition down the coasts and our local watershed is very important to us. We struggle with bringing businesses into the area because most of our counties run on well water. Our counties therefore have some of the highest out-commute percentages of anywhere else. People regularly must drive more than an hour to find suitable employment. We have a local transport service provided by Bay Aging, but no true public transportation.
Community Needs and Concerns
The Middle Peninsula and Northern Neck are largely rural communities with the inhabitants spread out over a large area. This means also that services must cover a wide area with only the resources allotted by the number of people, without consideration for the distance they must travel. All of our service providers are required to do more with less than other communities.

Its localities include the eastern portion of Loudoun County, the entire counties of Clark, Frederick & Winchester City, Shenandoah, Page, Warren, Rappahannock, Culpeper, Fauquier and the northwest portion of Fauquier in a compact contiguous district
Economic or Environmental Interests
VA-07 Northern Virginia “exurban DC” is nearly entirely within the Northern Virginia–Washington SMA standard metropolitan area, and it lies about a one-hour commute into Alexandria by highway from the Shenandoah Valley at its most remote points. - I commuted regularly to Alexandria from Harrisonburg to visit parents in Alexandria Virginia for seven years.
Community Needs and Concerns
Virginians here define themselves by where they went to high school, and where their children and grandchildren attend elementary, middle, and high school. - Along with communities of faith, college & pro football, professional or trade associations, and more recently politics, "school attendance zones" are the primary sources of self-identification here as alums, parents, and PTA members, for sports events, plays and concerts.

Community Activities and Services

Community Needs and Concerns
The rural crescent is currently being encroached upon by development and small farm holders are being squeezed out. More and more data centers are coming in. Traffic is becoming more of a problem and we are losing equestrian lands constantly. On top of that, we have no access to internet due to archaic telecommunications rules.

Cultural or Historical Interests
There is not great cultural diversity but there is some and perhaps more than is apparent. There should be more opportunities for cultural sharing. Within 30-45 minute are many Amish farms and stores, a large traditionalist Roman Catholic seminary, and Yogaville, an ashram. With Broadband - which many areas do not have - there are boundless cultural experiences, and for live cultural diversity there is Charlottesville, Richmond, and Durham & Raleigh, and also Lynchburg.
Community Activities and Services
Farmville is an important market and service town for the region. Most things most people need are here. There are four state parks for outdoor recreation within 30 minutes. We can as easily go to Lynchburg or Chesterfield (each about an hour) for more opportunities and services, or to Charlottesville for highest level medical care. Charlottesville also is a cultural highlight as is Richmond city. Durham and Raleigh NC are other diverse cultural opportunities. We can go to Lynchburg to get Amtrak N or S or to that airport for stateside travel. RIC or RDU are hubs for international travel or for better options stateside.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Many retirees enjoy the quieter and more (or very much more) affordable area. Farmville town has some important sustaining businesses, including Greenfront, which is essential for economic well being of the town proper. More regional or state attractions should be located here, perhaps in conjunction with Greenfront, the state parks, and the two colleges. Local agriculture might be advanced more with more products raised and prepared, for marketing locally, regionally, and nationally. These could become attracters (e.g. think of what Ben & Jerry's did for rural Vermont!).
Community Needs and Concerns
The region needs active talent committed to growing the region's successes: higher achievement in public schools, more and better specialties in health care services (including dental, mental health, senior services, etc.) We have generally good highway systems with some improvements needed, but essential for coherence in the region is reliable affordable Broadband and local/regional media that attend to concerns of the area, not captive to national cultural and political issues.

transportation diversity education environment suburban
Cultural or Historical Interests
The Greenbriar community area historically was built out in the early 1970s. The area shares a common “look and feel” of single family houses and tree lined streets.
Community Activities and Services
The Greenbriar community area shares common elementary schools (Greenbriar West, Greenbriar East), middle school (Rocky Run, and high school (Chantilly). We share nearby shopping areas (Greenbriar shopping center/Fair Lakes shopping center). We share nearby public parks (Rocky Run stream valley park), and share the local county library (Chantilly Regional). There are local Scout Packs (1133) and Troops (1547) as well.
Community Needs and Concerns
There are many workers here commuting to work (pre-COVID) using Metro transit and nearby highways). Transportation planning and congestion mitigation issues are pretty important to our area.Currently this community is split between several political district boundaries.

City of Fredericksburg
VA Community Mapping Drive
Danger: REPORT Aug. 12, 2021
housing voting rights diversity education environment
Cultural or Historical Interests
Fredericksburg has a complicated history, given its location and prominence as a site where black people were enslaved and escaped to freedom in 1862, where George Washington's mother and sister lived, where the civil rights movement and desegregation events occurred, and where the arts, entertainment, dining establishments, commercial and recreational river activities have also defined the community throughout the years. Multi-cultural, multi-generational, and with acitivities available for all who seek them out.
Community Activities and Services
My community is a small, vibrant city with a diverse population and a wide range of socio-economic groups with several churches, many restaurants, art galleries, museums, community centers, historic and recreational gathering places both within the city boundaries and close by. People in our community work both locally and commute to the DC Metro area, via both public and private modes of transportation. We reap the benefit of a state university, local hospital, and many non-profit organizations that address the needs of our community members and the passions for the river and many historic venues in our midst. We are one community and should not be split into different voting districts.
Economic or Environmental Interests
My community is located on the banks of a river, which attracts fishing enthusiasts, water sport enthusiasts, walkers, tubers and more. It is a defining part of our city and many community members volunteer and invest in its care through a non-profit, Friends of the Rappahannock. Both passenger and freight trains travel through our city, and the toxicity of some of the freight that travels through our city is a concern for many local residents.
Community Needs and Concerns
Our city is currently divided into two state assembly districts. This is detrimental to the city as a whole, since some city residents are within a district that is not reflective of the community where they live in terms of aforementioned attributes and geography. Our city should be a part of the same district for every level of government.

Community Activities and Services
My community is the rural area surrounding Staunton, Va. Staunton is where we go for all our needs like shopping, mechanical repairs, etc. It is also where we socialize. Many people commute going east on I-64 and we want that commute to be safe and efficient.
Economic or Environmental Interests
My community is largely agricultural. Most people either commute a considerable distance (at least 20 minutes) to work or they work a farm.
Community Needs and Concerns
The current Congressional district goes north and south along I-81. The more realistic map would be shorter than this. In my area, we tend to reach east towards Waynesboro, Afton, and Crozet as places we go and participate with. We have little in common with Roanoke, VA or Winchester, VA

Cultural or Historical Interests
The town of Vienna, Wolf Trap, and historic Lake Anne community development link the community through arts, architecture, and farmers markets. Spontaneous concerts in downtown Vienna and the pavilion in Reston Town center provide local community with access to local musical talent.
Community Activities and Services
My community is defined by the high school and trails, creeks, and parks used and protected by the residents. People gather in Reston Town Center, Wolf Trap and Vienna for shopping and restaurants and walk and bike along the W&O trail.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Our community tends to be bound by contiguous green spaces that line the creeks and provide wildlife trails for animals and bike and walking paths for residents. Pollution and protection of these green spaces from development are a shared concern.
Community Needs and Concerns
My community is divided by supervisory district and HD district lines which have diluted attention to ensuring the preservation of green space. We are divided from the portions of community who wanted and supported much needed public transportation options. We are divided from the our community which desires sidewalks and pathways to public transport options and whose neighborhood side streets are used to commute to highways and the metros.

City of Lynchburg community
VA Community Mapping Drive
Danger: REPORT July 22, 2021
Cultural or Historical Interests
The City of Lynchburg should be kept whole as a single community of interest because it is our hub for downtown historical and cultural venues, such as the Academy Center of the Arts, the Lynchburg Museum System, and many historical sites that allow Lynchburg residents to benefit from this shared history. We live here in the City because we care about these venues and want to be close to these venues and we want to advocate for these venues along with our fellow residents.
Community Activities and Services
The City of Lynchburg should be kept whole as a single community of interest because it has a single public school system, a single local government (the city of Lynchburg), and one police and public safety department.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Lynchburg is a single community of interest because it has one Economic Development Authority that prioritizes and plans for growth and development. Lynchburg is a small urban, relatively densely populated City that is growing. As such, our infrastructure, transportation, and planning needs and challenges are unique to us, and different from those of our surrounding, more rural counties. As a small urban city, we also have environmental and planning challenges that are unique to us. For example, loss of green spaces may not be an issue in our surrounding counties which are more rural, but it is a real issue in Lynchburg. So is the availability of good public transportation.
Community Needs and Concerns
Lynchburg as a small urban city has a poverty rate that is significantly higher than our surrounding rural counties, and requires the commensurate additional services (housing, medical, transportation, schools) to serve this segment of higher needs population.

Economic or Environmental Interests
Up here, there are government employees, people from different countries, representatives. There are a lot of major companies here too, like electrical companies. Large and small businesses. We support small businesses, especially during COVID-19. There are many military bases.
Community Needs and Concerns
Education, disabilities, veterans, lots of community services that people need to help out with mental and physical health. A lot of people fight for the rights of others, especially Black and brown people. There are a lot of non documented people here as well.

City of Norfolk
VA Community Mapping Drive
Danger: REPORT July 19, 2021
Cultural or Historical Interests
My community is very diverse: 47% White, 41% Black. This is partly because of the large Navy presence in the area. Sailors and their families are stationed here and many stay after their tour of duty. The median age is 30 with only ~10% over 65. It is very densely populated. The downtown are is heavily used from the Granby restaurants to Town Point Park and Waterside. There are almost no historical buildings left standing, but there is a strong sense of history and a vibrant art museum. The port is frequented by day-sailors and wanna be sailors, tourists, and cruise liners. There are many churches, which are heavily segragated, and non-denominationals are planting new congregations.
Community Activities and Services
My community is the City of Norfolk. People gather in their civic leagues and garden clubs, in their church communities; in groups to support local entities like the King's Daughters (supports CHKD), the Virginia Symphony League and the Opera Guild; in advocacy organizations (Mothers out Front, Mother Board757, the League of Women Voters); in environmental groups (the Elizabeth River Project, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, the Sierra Club), in their public and private school and university groups), in the shopping/dining areas (Ghent, Granby Street); for social and recreational needs (PrimePlus), for sports, for entertainment (Town Point Park, Scope, Chrysler), for healthcare (Sentara)
Economic or Environmental Interests
The Elizabeth River and the Chesapeake Bay dominate the economy of the region with shipping, ship building and repair, and fishing (recreational and commercial) interests. The community has worked hard to clean up the Elizabeth and it's tributaries which were heavily polluted were contaminating the Bay. The local utility has dominated political thinking in the area for too long, but very recently has bowed to public pressure and is installing wind mills in the Atlantic.
Community Needs and Concerns
The gerrymandering of our districts is obvious and detrimental. Some of Norfolk is included in a Virginia Beach district; some extends up the Eastern Shore. It is difficult or impossible for the representatives to serve the geographically distant areas with vastly different needs. There are no factory farms in Norfolk, but there is commercial fishing.

Cultural or Historical Interests
This community appreciates history, but also wants to confront and contextualize historical injustices that privilege some and penalize others. We strive for a progressive, inclusive, and thoughtful questioning of our assumptions and biases.
Community Activities and Services
My community is social and philanthropic, we like to gather in places like parks, plazas, restaurants, and cultural spaces. We like to bike and take transit to our destinations, patronize our local businesses, and support our neighborhood schools.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Almost everyone here is forced to drive because our public environment is dominated by space for private cars. People who can't afford cars lose out on economic opportunities because they are subjected to underfunded public transit and unconnected, unsafe non-vehicular walking and biking routes. Housing is expensive, but we turn over so much space for "free" to parking and moving cars.
Community Needs and Concerns
Districts are hard to understand because they always slice through neighborhoods in no logical way. They overlap municipal jurisdictions which makes understanding the regulations and politics even more convoluted.
