Danger: REPORT Nov. 19, 2021
Population: 2982
renewable resources healthcare mental health education elderly
Cultural or Historical Interests
Elders and children bring everyone together. Friendship brings everyone together too. Growing up on reservation there isn't a lot of access to many things. Culture and history took a loss and there is a lot of Elders passing. Language loss. No access to the lake or Mt. Grant. No fish in lake, huge impact to who we are. Pinenut festival is a shared history.
Community Activities and Services
Come together at the school and tribal gym. The gym has community events, funerals, sporting activities, recreational. Smokeshop and community center. Schurz elementary school to make friends and hangout. In the desert playing with the dirt. Only elementary school here. Travel to Fallon for shopping on a weekly basis. Pool and Boys & Girls club.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Residents are employed through the tribe, but more so in school districts, Yerington, Fallon, Hawthorne base. Working 100+ miles away. Limited water.
Community Needs and Concerns
High school students have to travel 30+ miles to get to school. Adults have to travel 30+ miles too for work and education. No full time hospital, have to drive about 40 miles to access emergency healthcare. Pinenut festival and traditional foods threatened due to cutting down of trees and climate change. Politicians need to listen on how to take care of the earth. Not everything is for sale or profit. Limited housing because water system does not support more houses. Community events and access to resources. More support for schools and more funding needed. Policies need to be in place for the funding to be used. Education and housing are an issue. Healthcare is an issue too.

Economic or Environmental Interests
Community members traveling through rain, sleet or snow to get to work. Walker lake is drying up and river is not running.
Community Needs and Concerns
Public transportation needed for college students, for workers, & for personal. No crosswalks or sidewalks, huge threat to safety along highway to get to school and residence, etc. Diesel trucks flying through on highway, a lower speed limit needed and enforced. Politicians need to understand our way of living and that we are culturally unique. Equitable school districts. Mental health services and programs needed. School needs a counselor. Disconnect via online schooling. Poor internet services, it goes out a lot of the time.

Cultural or Historical Interests
Educational dept. started a language program to revitalize culture and language. Culture incorporated more into school district. Pinenut Festival is a shared history and brings together everyone, has been going on for nearly 100 years.
Community Activities and Services
Recreational area Weber reservoir for camping, swimming, etc. One sandy road to get there so it's sometimes difficult. Small community park with a couple swings, there is also a track. Not too many places to gather. Community park with baseball to open next year with asphalt walking area. Healthcare - Walker River tribal clinic working off refferal system. Ambulance service and for emergency service there is Care Flight. Educational Services there is Walker River Education Dept. Transportation for medical is done by clinic, homemaker for Elders to offer services for shopping, etc. Funding to come in to offer transportation to Yerington for school. There are volunteer EMTs to help out.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Majority of residents are employed off reservation at Hawthorne military base. Walker River has just over 90 employees. Not a lot of job opportunities in Schurz. Abandoned vehicles and houses serve as an environmental concern. Environmental program has been doing better in protection. Still fighting for water rights since early 1900s. Walker Lake has been improving, but not until recently.
Community Needs and Concerns
Phone system always goes, poor internet and cell service. Emergency and other calls are slowed down. Would benefit from being in one district so there doesn't have to be multiple connections. Tribal needs should be priority. Cafeteria has a diesel smell that has not been fixed. Poverty level is almost 50% where families are under the poverty line. There needs to more local jobs to help. Politicians should understand people on a cultural level. Local and state support needed.

Cultural or Historical Interests
My community is comprised of a growing gentrified area situated next to Latinx majority shopping and business centers.
Community Activities and Services
My community is situated close to both a VA and general care hospital. There are also multiply parks in the area, making it ideal for houseless individuals, which has become a growing problem.
Economic or Environmental Interests
My community is one currently being impacted greatly by growing gentrification. This has lead to many over-priced restaurants and stores. Rising prices have also caused a understandable growing influx of houselessness that only continues at an alarming rate.
Community Needs and Concerns
My community deserves better representation than just catering to those that have or are just moving in. The push out of long time community members in the name of profit has been and continues to be a huge problem, silencing those that need to be heard most.

There are churches. there are different minorities however I don't know of any specific places for them to meet. I do not believe there is a shared history.
Community Activities and Services
People in town meet at the convention center. People on the reservation gather at the tribal gym. There is several shopping areas and a school system with a few different schools. There is a community college(WNC). There is a library and some parks. There is Lake Lahontan. In my area there is one church; the mormon church.
Economic or Environmental Interests
A lot of people are employed by the mine. I don't know of any other places really. I don't know of any environmental concerns.
Community Needs and Concerns
Politicians should know that we are a diverse community and would benefit from public health programs such as public transport, health services and things like that.People feel disenfranchises by zoning because it makes minorities have a harder time being represented. It has been used to drowned out the voices of others.

agriculture renewable resources Indigenous water rural
Cultural or Historical Interests
We have a significate number of religious entities in Churchill County. There are efforts to revitalizes and establish connections with the indigenous populations however there are still animosity between the reservation and the county of Churchill.
Community Activities and Services
Community events are held all over and seasonal. Important community meetings are also held. Most events are held virtually due to COVID. There are community health workers that connect people to services through social media. There are transportation programs like C.A.R.T. There is one community college/trade school, a charter school (k-12) and a full public school district as well as 2 private schools. There is one public library. We have 3 public parks and sports centers however, there aren't readily available recreational spaces for the reservation/ tribal communities outside the area. The Churchill Community Coalition offers several services to connect the community to resources.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Most people are employed in agriculture, municipal, service industry, and a significate number commute to US Parkway for industrial jobs. The prospects of Green Energy Corporation are depleting and polluting natural resources. Significate agricultural land is also endangered by these "efforts" by creating a shortage of water. These companies do not honor their agreements with tribal land and other communities who need these natural resources.
Community Needs and Concerns
The City and County do not always represent their constituents as well as they should or work together on most issues. There is a significant misappropriations and misallocation of funds coming for the state level to the local level of government. Rural communities have historically and purposefully misrepresented and only utilized during voting season. We are not given the funds needed to create functioning communities, as in the bare minimum.

My community was built around the 1970s. We have a Rhema church and Eastern Orthodox church in the neighborhood. On average my neighbors are predominantly Latino, middle aged, families with young children. There isn't a common language spoken, there's a number of different languages spoken. I don't live in any specific district. I wouldn't say there aren't any specific cultural bonds of the community. I recently moved here. I live in the same area as Victorian Square.
Community Activities and Services
In my area we have cultural markets (Asian, Hispanic), a grocery outlet. I haven't been able to notice any organic grocery options nearby. I have noticed public and private k-12 schools in my area, there aren't any institutions of higher education nearby. I haven't noticed any public libraries or parks in my area. There aren't any places of worship nearby. There's a hospital down the road, there are also quick care clinics in my area as well. There's a bus stop down the street but that's the only noticeable public transport nearby. There aren't any nonprofits in my area. There's one community center nearby. The Truckee River is nearby.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Alot of my neighbors work for warehouses. I do notice trash on sidewalks and roads, but not that much. I would say there are water conservation issues within my community. The nearby river is polluted. There is a houseless population that circulates through the area.
Community Needs and Concerns
I would like more resources for the houseless population, I believe that would solve alot of the other issues in my area. Landback.

Cultural or Historical Interests
The places of worship near me are mostly Christian and Catholic churches. On average my neighbors are Hispanic or Latino, Spanish and English speaking, 50's-60's, families. We live within the Downtown Arts District and the Historic Huntridge neighborhood, there are a lot of older homes. Now there are more cultural events (Indigenous & Hispanic/Latinx) happening. This neighborhood is part of Old Vegas, so there's a lot of history with the rise of Las Vegas as a city.
Community Activities and Services
We have Hispanic supermarkets, there's a regular Albertson's a little out of the way, there's one Family Dollar, there aren't any wholesale options. There are mostly public schools and magnet schools within my neighborhood. There aren't any higher education institutions near me. The nearest library to me is not really within my neighborhood. There's two public parks nearby. There's quite a few places of worship(2-3). Sunrise Hospital is within a 10 minute drive of me, there's only one urgent care that's attached to the hospital. I go to the Paiute Tribal clinic which is near Downtown. There's frequent bus stops in the area but I don't see any Citibikes. There aren't any local nonprofits near
Economic or Environmental Interests
I notice most of the neighbors on my street are Construction workers. I do notice a lot of trash on my sidewalks and streets. There is some illegal dumping that goes on within my community. There is a lot of homelessness within my neighborhood and especially at the parks nearby. Sometimes there are trucks that drive by causing air pollution. A lot of the yards in my area don't have grass so the water conservation in that area is good but on the other hand many of the houses have pools, so water conservation could possibly be better. Sometimes I notice bunny's but that is a little more towards UNLV, so a bit further than my neighborhood.
Community Needs and Concerns
One of the bigger problems in the neighborhood is trash, and that's caused by the houseless folks in the area. I would like to see more resources for houseless folks rather than pushing them out of the community and criminalizing them.

Economic or Environmental Interests
I haven't noticed the averaged career of my neighbor. I believe that my sidewalks and neighborhood are clean and well maintained. I would say that my neighborhood has well maintained, high quality roads. There is some construction nearby, although the roads were of high quality before then. There is a lot of greenspace in my are, but living in a desert I see room for improvement for water conservation. I live in a area of those with higher incomes so the neighborhood is better taken care of.
Community Needs and Concerns
My residency is not my community. I moved from Rainbow & Charleston to this area, and the difference of living in these two different spaces is huge. I am not completely familiar with the schools in my area, but I did go to public school in other parts of Las Vegas. The university I go to and the college I'm interested in transferring to are not within my community. I haven't seen any libraries nearby. There are quite a few parks, down the street are 2 parks. There aren't any places of worship nearby. I haven't seen any buses or bus-stops in my area. I have a couple Urgent Cares nearby that I utilize, but there aren't hospitals nearby. I mostly have businesses and residential in my area.
Economic or Environmental Interests
For the most part most of the folks I know are in customer service/service industry jobs. There is a lot of illegal dumping in the open spaces nearby, my sidewalks and streets are pretty clean though. The quality of the roads are good. There is a lot of construction in my area, I have lived here for 2 years and every day there has been construction. I would say land conservation is something relevant to my community, I constantly see expansion and worry about the wildlife that lives here.
Community Needs and Concerns
I think in the public school systems I would like Native American history to be taught more. As someone who grew up within the public school system here I do see a lack of inclusion on that part. I would like to also address the Native Tuition Waiver that passed during the 81st NV leg. session., as a Native that grew up within Nevada I know that all Native students within Nevada's K-12 system would benefit at little cost to the state.

There aren't many community centered opportunities near me, mostly business and medical. Nearby there are some Buddhist Temples in Chinatown. My neighbors are very diverse in race, mostly early 30's to retirement age, and unfortunately I haven't been able to interact with them to know what is the language most spoken. There aren't any museums or galleries nearby, the only cultural thing worth mentioning is that I live near Chinatown. I do know that several of my neighbors are DREAMERS.
Community Activities and Services
There are a variety and large amount of grocery stores where I live (wholesale, organic, low-cost). I have not noticed the frequency or type of schools in my area. There is one bus route within my neighborhood. There aren't any libraries nearby, I have to travel quite a ways to get to one. Currently, there is a park being built in my neighborhood (it looks to have water feature) but other than that there aren't many parks. Right across the street is a hospital and other medical buildings, my whole area has a lot of medical facilities. There are a few places of worship for me within driving distance. There aren't many local nonprofits near me.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Across the street from my neighborhood are some very expensive houses. My neighbors are a mix of different incomes, I had some neighbors get evicted due to job loss during the pandemic. The majority of them work in the service industry. I live in a clean neighborhood, there aren't any polluting industries. Drinking water quality is good but my concern is water quantity. The quality of the roads is good. There isn't much construction in community, there is some near the park that's almost done.
Community Needs and Concerns
Water Conservation incentive programs to replace lawn with water conservative landscapes. Crime is also something that I would like addressed. I have seen that they are working on the crime in my area, so I appreciate that. Something missing from where I live, is community support and community related things. I feel like I only live in my area, I have to travel longer than necessary distances in order to attend community events or any community resources. There isn't much of a feeling of community. I have concern over rate of rent increases as well.

The majority of my neighbors are english speaking, Caucasian, and aged 60's or older. From what I've noticed a majority of the places of worship in my area are non-denominational. The Washoe tribe will occasionally have events, as well as the Carson Colony and Stewart Colony.
Community Activities and Services
My neighborhood has a wide variety of grocery stores (organic, Walmart, low-cost). There is a hospital and a few different urgent cares nearby. There is the Washoe clinic about 15 minutes away. We have 1 busing system, it's isn't that big. Nearby there are 2-3 charter schools, 2 large High Schools, about 5 middle schools, and other grade schools. We have Western Nevada College and Sierra Nevada College within the neighborhood as well, UNR isn't too far away in Reno. We have one large park with other neighborhood parks and public swimming pools. There are 2 public libraries within my neighborhood. There are a lot of places of worship. There are a handful of non-profit organizations.
Economic or Environmental Interests
There isn't a lot of trash on the sidewalks or illegal dumping. The quality of the roads are good. There is some residential construction within my neighborhood. Many of my neighbors are employed by the State and there is quite a bit of small to medium sized businesses that employ folks. In the Summer there is a lot of smoke from the Wildfires, and haze in the winters. I live in an arid area that doesn't get much moisture.
Community Needs and Concerns
My area is not homogeneous in our political views. I wouldn't want the ways the districts are drawn to make anyone feel like their vote doesn't matter. Don't dilute the Native vote.

Waterstreet is a smaller downtown area that is historic and very active. The majority of my neighbors in the apartment complex are Black families. The churches that I notice in my area are mostly Catholic and there is a large Christian academy down the street from me.
Community Activities and Services
There is a Smiths, Walmart, and Albertson's in my area. There are more elementary schools than Middle or High Schools in my neighborhood. The Nevada State College and College of Southern NV Henderson campus is nearby. There's at least 3 libraries and about every half a mile there's a park. There are a few bus stops. There is a place of worship every block or so in my area. There's a Salvation Army across the street from my apartment complex. There aren't any hospitals as close as I would like them to be. There is an Urgent Care within a five mile radius of me. There are some community events hosted near the Silver Knights practice arena.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Most of my neighbors look to be service workers and construction workers. There are quite a few neighborhood under construction nearby (about 3-4 of them). The roads are decent, off of Boulder HWY there is a water leak that has been an issue for about four months now. They have blocked off that area, but it still hasn't been fixed. I also live near a street that is often used to get to Lake Mead, so there are quite a few visitors that use that road. The smaller streets have trash on the sidewalks and in the bigger lots there are folks that illegally dump.
Community Needs and Concerns
I would like more focus on cleaning up the trash in my area and the rise in homeless people as well. The homeless folks tend to hang out in the parks.

My community used to be segregated and remains predominantly a black neighborhood. There have been more latino families moving to the area and on my street which used to have the same families for 50 years. This is now known as the Historic Westside Neighborhood and signs were setup around the boundaries.
Community Activities and Services
I have lived in my home in West Las Vegas since 1963. It was a segregated neighborhood when I moved here. Our community gathers at our churches - I attend Zion United Methodist; we gather at the Doolittle community center and Mario's Westside market. I taught at the local elementary schools before retiring in 1994. There is also the MLK community center for senior activities. We have UMC quickcare but I travel across town for specialty healthcare services that I need.
Economic or Environmental Interests
This neighborhood has a lot of low-income, working families. As an older neighborhood, our infrastructure is also aging and has not been upgraded. We frequently lose power, cable and internet service. Residents are employed in the hotels, local government and school district. I know many CCSD teachers and employees in the neighborhood.
Community Needs and Concerns
Our community needs upgraded infrastructure. Our power lines and cable lines primarily. I have Cox cable for tv, phone and internet. When those lines are down, I lose ALL connection. I am 87 years old and that can be very serious due to my health conditions. There needs to be investment in older, urban public works infrastructure including our water and sewer lines but my utilities are the greatest concern.
