Arlington North : Hall's Hill
League of Women Voters of Virginia
Danger: REPORT July 26, 2021
Cultural or Historical Interests
Arlington was once part of the District of Columbia. It was once the home to many dairy farms. A population boom occurred during WWII when the federal government expanded. Arlington was the home of Robert E. Lee, whose home and property was seized by the federal Government during the Civil War - it is now the home to Arlington National Cemetery. Many civil war sites are located in the county. There are several historically-black neighborhoods in the county. One is Hall's Hill in North Arlington, which is served by two churches. Currently Hall's Hill neighborhood is split between two different House of Delegates districts.
Community Activities and Services
Arlington is located just across the river from Washington, D.C. It is an independent county with no independent cities or towns within its boundaries. Schools, churches and businesses form the center of daily lives. Bike trails and parks dot Arlington and are widely used. Bus and metro services are readily available. Motor traffic can be heavy at times. A major hospital is located in our community and serves the entire county as well as nearby cities. A major airport lies within its boundaries.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Many Arlington residents work for the federal government in D.C., but many also work for tech companies and local government agencies and NGOs. They rely heavily on public transportation. Arlington has experienced severe flooding in recent years. We are concerned about preserving our greenspace and protecting our environment - including air quality and tree canopy.
Community Needs and Concerns
Arlington abuts Falls Church City, City of Alexandria, and Fairfax County. Residents travel within these three jurisdictions to engage in shopping, dining, and recreation. However, Arlingtonians are first and foremost concerned about services within county boundaries - schools, parks, transportation.

Virginia Tech neighbors and employees
League of Women Voters of Virginia
Danger: REPORT July 7, 2021
Economic or Environmental Interests
My community is centered around Virginia Tech. The university is the major employer in the area. While the main campus is located in the town of Blacksburg, students, faculty, and staff live in both the town and surrounding counties. In addition, residents of the surrounding counties travel to the towns of Blacksburg and Christiansburg and the city of Radford to shop. The university also draws people to athletic and cultural events on campus.
Community Needs and Concerns
My community is concerned about affordable housing and good schools. The growth of the university has put a strain on the existing housing supply, driving up prices to the point that many employees can no longer afford to live in Blacksburg. Student housing has changed the nature of some neighborhoods, driving out families and older residents.

Celebrate by Del Webb "Community of Interest"
League of Women Voters of Virginia
Danger: REPORT July 4, 2021
Cultural or Historical Interests
We are a multi-cultural community of retirees (or anticipating retirement) from many different regions of the United States. We appreciate living in such a historical area and participate in cultural programs through the University of Mary Washington.
Community Activities and Services
Celebrate is an active adult Del Webb community of over 1,000 homes in southern Stafford County. We enjoy activities at our community lodge, but also are Central Rappahannock Regional Library patrons and attend Fredericksburg area churches. We have access to Mary Washington Hospital and a good choice of doctors in Fredericksburg. We have grocery and drug stores as well as big box stores close by, but other shopping and dining options are limited along Route 17.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Most of our residents are retired and over 55 years of age though a few are still working from home or commuting north. We enjoy our community’s proximity to the Rappahannock River, and many are gardeners and/or participate in environmental organizations. An environmental concern for some is noise pollution – from I-95 and loud summer concerts, baseball games, and fireworks on the other side of the river but only a few miles “as the crow flies.”
Community Needs and Concerns
Route 17 is our “main street” and we have concerns about heavy truck traffic, too many auto parts stores, and a lack of quality restaurants. Celebrate residents would benefit from being in the same district as other communities along Route 17. When the 88th House District was formed in 2001, however, there was a “carve-out” around the 28th District. At that time, our community was undeveloped. We now have over 1,000 homes, and it is time for lines to be redrawn so we are fairly represented.
