Union Square Community
League of Women Voters of the City of New York Community Mapping Drive
Danger: REPORT July 13, 2021
Cultural or Historical Interests
My community is in the center of Manhattan, but somewhat in between traditional neighborhoods, being south of Flatiron, east of Chelsea, and north of the West Village and East Village. We have our own unique cultural identity centered around Union Square Park and the many social and cultural happenings there throughout history.
Community Activities and Services
My community is centered around Union Square Park, which serves as an important communal resource. It is the location of a regular farmers' market and many other events that occur there, such as protests and gatherings, as well as have public services like playgrounds and green space. Parts of NYU and The New School are in my community. There are also a number of subway stations in my community, including the large 14 Street-Union Square station, the city's upkeep and development of which affects the area.
Economic or Environmental Interests
My community is impacted by rising costs of living, which threatens to push many residents out or make residing here more economical challenging. The maintenance of the Union Square green space, valuable in a dense urban environment, is also important.
Community Needs and Concerns
My community is often split up in redistricting, divided between congressional districts, state house and senate districts, and NYC city council and state assembly districts, which dilutes our interests.

Elmont Memorial High School Community
League of Women Voters of the City of New York Community Mapping Drive
Danger: REPORT June 8, 2021
Cultural or Historical Interests
Elmont is a primarily Caribbean and West African community with a growing South Asian population, with the majority of the stores in the neighborhood reflecting these cultures.
Community Activities and Services
Most community activities and services in West Elmont occur at or around the school (e.g., the local park, the elementary schools, etc.) Most of these activities are accessed via walking or driving.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Elmont has many small businesses (e.g., restaurants, barbershops, corner stores, delis, etc.), so policies that help develop new and old small businesses are very important to us.
Community Needs and Concerns
Many citizens of Elmont work in nearby New York City, but there is a huge lack of accessible public transportation to the City, making it difficult to navigate between the nearby boroughs and Elmont.

Turtle Bay/East of 3rd
League of Women Voters of the City of New York Community Mapping Drive
Danger: REPORT April 3, 2021
Population: 20463
Cultural or Historical Interests
It's a very international area given the UN. There is a large Japanese community with the Japan Society, Armenian with St. Vartan's Church, and focal points for Norwegians, Nigerians, and many other countries. The shared history is pretty limited since it feels pretty transient. Used to be a home for slaughterhouses. Tudor City is nice, with few windows facing the East River. Ford Foundation beautiful with interior gardens.
Community Activities and Services
My community is located near Grand Central, the United Nations, and NYU Hospital. We are near the Ferry at 34th St. A lot of protests take place here, in front of embassies and the Governor's NYC address. Great local public transportation. Near FDR making it easier to leave midtown, but traffic is busy. No parking pretty much.
Economic or Environmental Interests
To the south, more Murray Hill, it's more middle class. Most of Turtle Bay is also pretty middle class, but there are a number of more expensive apartment buildings that bring in richer and often less community oriented residents. There are few parks, but Dag Hammerskjold Plaza is a focal point with a Wed. farmers market, Tudor City, and playgrounds at St. Vartan's and 42nd and East River. The UN blocks egress to the river. Before 9/11 the UN park was open to the public but now it is a fortress
Community Needs and Concerns
We could use more parks, places to make the place feel like a community. Better bikeways, although that situation has been improving.
