Pike-Monroe Pocono/Commuter Rim
DTL Drive - Test 1
Danger: REPORT July 14, 2021
Cultural or Historical Interests
Milford, the Pike County seat, is home to a vibrant artistic and literary community. In Monroe, cultural diversity has increased rapidly - a trend accelerated by the pandemic as remote or hybrid work arrangements have proliferated. Catholicism and evangelical Protestant faiths predominate, but other religions have a visible footprint.
Community Activities and Services
The Pocono Commuter rim marks the farthest reach of public transit between Northeastern Pennsylvania and New York City. The perception of this region as a vacation area is largely outdated. Although many homeowners are still part-time residents, Monroe and Pike Counties have become increasingly attractive as primary residences as home prices in the NYC metro area have risen and local services have improved.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Healthy lakes and rivers remain central to the region's tourism-related industries. Transportation is a key interest. Two bus companies currently largely control their respective commuter routes, and avoid competing directly with each other. Extension of NJ Transit train service into the region has been advocated periodically, but has never proven viable. Healthcare services in some portions of the area are strained by an aging population and shortages of key skills. Although property taxes are generally low, they are nonetheless a controversial topic, especially between retirees and families with school-age children.
Community Needs and Concerns
Our immediate goal in redistricting is to reunite Pike and Monroe in a Senate district. As the counties have become more similar and interconnected economically, they have been separated politically. This separation is most visible in the State Senate. The two counties were joined, until 1966, when pieces of Monroe began to move into other districts. The separation became complete in 2012. Currently, Pike is represented by Lisa Baker, who resides in Dallas, west of Wilkes-Barre. Her home and main office are 65 miles from us, but just eight miles from the Plymouth residence of Wilkes-Barre Senator John Yudichak. Two other Senators are much closer to us.

Hemlock Farms in Lords Valley, Pike County
DTL Drive - Test 1
Danger: REPORT June 14, 2021
Community Activities and Services
My community is Hemlock Farms, a gated residential community with its own recreational facilities, public safety function and volunteer fire department. Most homes are still not primary residences, but full-time residents have increased over time as housing costs in NYC metro have risen and tolerance for long commutes has expanded. The pandemic has added many telecommuters to the full-time population. Located mostly in Blooming Grove and Delaware Townships, the community has little dependence on local public services but contributes disproportionately to the economy and tax base.

University City/Penn Community
DTL Drive - Test 1
Danger: REPORT July 21, 2020
Cultural or Historical Interests
The most common sense of belonging in my community is not to Philadelphia but to the University. I feel like not many students are that invested in Philadelphia's overall health and safety as a city because they see it as a stepping stone or simply a background for their college experience. Because of this, I think Penn, as one of the largest contribution of inhabitants of the city, breeds a certain ignorance in not making more of an effort to connect the Penn community to Philadelphia itself.
Community Activities and Services
While University City is part of West Philadelphia, Penn, Drexel, and other universities make it a point to set boundaries between themselves and the larger West Philadelphia community. In West Philly, there are gatherings in Clark Park and all down Baltimore street, but many students don't know about this. Most students tend to stick between the Pine & Chestnut and 33rd & 40th streets, the predominant locations of campuses. The shops between these blocks get the most service from my community
Economic or Environmental Interests
As a student of the University of Pennsylvania, my relationship to the economic community around me is somewhat complicated. On one hand, I am part of University City and contribute directly to the book stores, food halls, and other associated services directed by Penn. Penn is one of the largest landowners in Philadelphia and also one of the largest employers, but beyond that there are many restaurants, stores, and shops that rely on either the university or its student base for business.
Community Needs and Concerns
While a lot of students may not be in touch with the rest of the Philadelphia community, I do think that some students are very passionate and care about Penn's relation to Philly, as there is now a movement to encourage Penn to pay PILOTs and contribute back to the West Philly community. I am interested to see how the culture in the student community changes, and therefore, how voting priorities and engagement change, in the coming years.

The Cynwyd Heritage Trail is a major link for the community. People use it for recreation and as a bike route to Philadelphia. It's a former train rail which was converted to a park. Over the last 12 years it's been expanding and offering more services for the community.

Art Museum Ara
DTL Drive - Test 1
Danger: REPORT July 20, 2020
Cultural or Historical Interests
Walking the Parkway or Schuylkill banks trails; hanging out for brunch at Little Pete's; walking up Fairmount to Philly Flavors (the mostly happily integrated spot in Philly) for a water ice or ice cream cone on a hot summer night; having a beer with friends at the Bishop's Collar; biking up the river drives; in pre-pandemic times, going to the Park System's summer beer gardens in the Oval or the Azalea Garden; going to the big events at Eastern State Penitentiary; block parties.
Community Activities and Services
The "Rocky" steps of the Art Museum have become even more of a gathering spot for all kinds of activities during the pandemic, as has the museum's Azalea Garden, Eakins Oval, Boathouse Row and the Schuylkill Banks. We get all our basic community services from the city and county of Philadelphia.
Economic or Environmental Interests
My community depends heavily on the job opportunities in Philadelphia's rich eds/meds complex. My neighborhood is also within easy walking distance of Philly's business center, so people have jobs in insurance, law, real estate, finance and tech (e.g. Comcast). We are just steps from the Schuylkill and the Fairmount Park system, so concern about preserving water quality and the shared commons of the park is widespread.
Community Needs and Concerns
Quality of the neighborhood schools. Keeping the stream of huge public events on the Parkway from infringing too much on our neighborhood peace; not letting the broader issues of racism, brutality and injustice erode the generally amiable relations among people of different races in the Fairmount/Spring Garden/Francisville area.
