Tell Us About Your Community!
Danger: REPORT Aug. 23, 2021
housing healthcare diversity education environment
Cultural or Historical Interests
Most of the community has some ties to the University of Wisconsin-Madison--students, faculty, other staff, and alumni. A large part of the community is a historic district. The architecture and residents (age, religion, ethnic background, etc.) are varied.
Community Activities and Services
My community is centered around Vilas Park and Zoo and surrounded by the Monroe, Regent, and Park street business areas. It includes a branch library and two hospitals and related clinics. There are several churches and a synagog, but many if not most of us belong to more distant congregations. Neighborhood House serves primarily the eastern end of the neighborhood. Buses run along Regent, Monroe, Mills, and Park streets but not in the core of the neighborhood.
Economic or Environmental Interests
We share a concern for the natural environment of Lake Wingra, Vilas park, smaller parks, and the University of Wisconsin Arboretum.
Community Needs and Concerns
The busy streets (Park, Regent, Monroe), natural features (Lake Wingra, Wingra Creek), and large institutions (Meriter and St. Mary's hospitals, Edgewood College, clinics) form boundaries of the community. Our shared concerns include protecting the community from the detrimental effects of motor vehicles (noise, air and water pollution, danger to pedestrians, climate change).

Danger: REPORT Aug. 18, 2021
LGBT+ housing education elderly environment
Cultural or Historical Interests
My community is somewhat diverse. Various ethnicities, and sexual orientations. My immediate residence tends to an older age group. 50’s and up
Community Activities and Services
My community is made up of lakefront residents on Lake Monona. We boat and sail in the summers. Local gathering places include Olbrich Gardens, Pinney Library, and local businesses.
Economic or Environmental Interests
My community is on the lakefront. The lake here is very shallow and weed choked. Prevailing winds push sediment full of polluting chemicals to our shore. It’s a great concern to our community.
Community Needs and Concerns
Our community needs a stronger tax base. Currently it is primarily property taxes on residents. There’s not much industrial or retail contribution. I’d draw lines that represent the needs of lakefront owners

Cultural or Historical Interests
It includes low-income housing (e.g. 7933 Tree Lane, nearby Senior Center, and Wexford Ridge), dense housing (e.g. Tamarack Trails condominiums), multiple apartment buildings (say 4 stories or less), and single family homes.
Community Activities and Services
My community encompasses the southwestern section of the Madison Beltline (includes the interchanges at Gammon Road, Mineral Point Road, Old Sauk Road, and Greenway Blvd). It includes shopping areas, has some elementary schools and a high school, and is served by a Madison Metro Bus Route.
Community Needs and Concerns
One concern is integration across the Beltline for the area around Woodman's West Grocery Store, south on High Point Road to Mid Town Road, west on Junction Ridge Road /Pleasant View Road/County Road M, and north to Middleton.

Danger: REPORT Aug. 13, 2021
transportation housing voting rights diversity affordable
Cultural or Historical Interests
Many people in my community are white and skew on the younger side (25-34).
Community Activities and Services
People in my community typically walk, bike, or take the bus to work or school. There are several bars in the neighborhood that people gather in, and they range from dive bar to more classy cocktail bar. There are also coffee shops nearby, and there is a grocery store within a 10-minute walk to many people. Most of the housing in the area is rental housing. Students from the University of Madison tend to be graduate students. Several high-rise buildings are luxury apartments occupied by Epic employees. Downtown Madison is just a 10-minute walk. Healthcare options are near enough to walk to or ride the bus to.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Residents in my area tend to be employed as graduate students at the UW, are young professionals working for Epic, or they are professionals in the service industry. Tourism is a heavy draw for downtown Madison. One issue is trying to create a transportation system that does not force those tourists to bring cars into the congested downtown area.
Community Needs and Concerns
We need to create a transportation system that will last well into the future, be reliable, and get people to where they need to go more effectively and efficiently. We also need to create a homeless services center within reach of those folks who are experiencing homelessness - near downtown. We keep trying to puch these folks to the fringes without supporting them. Part of that support includes meeting them where they are.

Danger: REPORT Aug. 13, 2021
transportation housing diversity environment affordable
Cultural or Historical Interests
My community is influenced by its history of one of Madison's earliest neighborhoods. It's history as an industrial area shaped many of the area buildings which now comprise the Third Lake Historic District. A period of decline in the 1960s and 70s, followed by a counter culture revival continue to shape the character of the neighborhood today. Growing popularity of the area is now driving up housing prices and changing the composition of the area.
Community Activities and Services
My community is characterized by many restaurants, shopping, and music festivals both within the neighborhood and because of it's proximity to downtown. Location along Lake Monona also shapes our community through parks, beaches and the Yahara River.
Economic or Environmental Interests
My community borders Lake Monona to the South and includes the Yahara River.
Community Needs and Concerns
My community has common interests with other neighborhoods on the Isthmus in Madison as well as downtown Madison. These neighborhoods are very engaged in civic affairs. They all grapple with growing popularity of the area that, along with City policies, lead to increase in housing and commercial construction. How to accommodate the growing demand while maintaining a high quality of life for all is an ongoing challenge.

Cultural or Historical Interests
My community - Sun Prairie - has evolved over time into an East-West city especially with the development of separate east-west high schools and their corresponding attendance areas. I think that attention should be paid to establishing new supervisory districts that are somewhat sensitive to these established boundaries. Most communities of color (African American and Latino) reside in the center/east and far east side of town. A sizable Asian/Middle East population resides on the west side.

Cultural or Historical Interests
There's a lot of Lutheran churches in the area, and generally welcoming. The area is predominantly white, English speaking. With the influx of newer residents, more cultural diversity is introduced. Hopefully some of the existing long term residents will embrace more of the change.
Community Activities and Services
Our community is growing quite a bit with all of the new housing developments, and some of the existing residents may not like the change! All in all though, we're a community close to Madison with a lot of people in the Healthcare industry. The schools were all recently renovated, so that's a big draw to live in McFarland. We're also one of the lakes that link together in the area.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Most people are employed in Madison. Quite a few are in the Healthcare industry with area hospitals and the UW being nearby they're a lot of educators in the community as well as for Madison. The area lakes and waterways are polluted and have an overgrowth of algae, especially with a lot of phosphorus that enters into the system. The landfill only has a couple more years to function... and then what!?
Community Needs and Concerns
There are a lot of little communities that should probably just be annexed into surrounding areas like Monona, Stoughton, McFarland, etc... that way the smaller towns, like Blooming Grove, would then be wrapped into McFarland, for example... the kids come to our schools anyways, may as well have them share the tax burden.

Mifflin Area Community
Tell Us About Your Community!
Danger: REPORT July 21, 2021
Cultural or Historical Interests
Mifflin Street was the epicenter of the anti-war movement in the Midwest in the late 1960s and 1970s. The State Capitol is a beautiful building, the interior of which was restored in the 1990s to honor the history of our state government. State Street and surrounding streets feature notable commercial and residential buildings with plaques describing their place in the history of our city and state. The Overture Center for the Arts is a more recent building of distinction. #AMENDS is a community-based, interactive art project hosted by Madison Museum of Contemporary Art (MMoCA). It brings together artists, community leaders and the public to lay the groundwork for the eradication of racism.
Community Activities and Services
Our community is distinguished by its downtown Madison location near the State Capitol, State Street, the Central Branch of the Madison Public Library and other cultural, governmental and economic resources. It is on the isthmus between Lake Mendota and Lake Monona, and its central location makes it generally accessible to excellent healthcare, the University of Wisconsin-Madison and multiple continuing education opportunities, as well as entertainment, shopping and dining. The many students who live in the area, along with professionals and retired residents, make this a vibrant community.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Our community is the center of state, county and city government. Most residents who are employed work in government, healthcare, education including the UW, and high tech companies, including Epic. Many students who live here work in the service industry, including restaurants. We have a diverse, educated, multilingual and multicultural community. We are fortunate to have many excellent ethnic restaurants. While much of the housing is quite expensive, Capitol Centre Court provides low-income housing designed especially for people with disabilities. Also, the adjacent Bayview area has more affordable housing.
Community Needs and Concerns
Economic and environmental concerns include homelessness, the health of downtown businesses (especially locally owned businesses), and the health of the lakes. The community needs more mixed income housing, better accessibility for people with disabilities, and a neighborhood park that is easily accessible to all ages within a few blocks of the Capitol.

Community Needs and Concerns
Although our community has its roots and many traditions in small town life, rapid growth and social change produced a city with the diversity and the issues of inequality that come when the scale of an organization or community grows. What was unseen becomes visible. We need to address these changes not as a call to the return of small towns, but a chance to address needs that were already there, but in scale seemed more manageable, or where visible differences did not enhance the divisions.

Danger: REPORT July 8, 2021
Cultural or Historical Interests
My close community is quite gentrified and white. The closer one gets to Lake Monona, there are fewer rental units and larger more expensive housing. Our immediate neighborhood has house values that are increasingly pricing all but the well-to-do out. I'd say that my immediate community is progressive politically. More and more wealthy families with young children are moving in.
Community Activities and Services
Goodman Community Center is a vital member of our community which serves all ages and especially those facing economic hardship. It is the most racially diverse institution in our neighborhood. Pinney and Hawthorne libraries are very important as well. We have a thriving commercial corridor on Atwood Avenue.
Economic or Environmental Interests
We are located near Lake Monona. I believe people are mostly employed in the city of Madison. Our community's run off goes directly into the lake resulting in high levels of weeds and bad smells in the summer. We are home to Kipp Industries which emits air pollution.
Community Needs and Concerns
Our community needs a population reflecting the diversity of our city. We could easily be divided into an all-white, high economic class neighborhood that could be pitted against other communities in Madison.

Cultural or Historical Interests
While the neighborhood was traditionally white, working class, it has diversified in recent years to include greater populations of African-Americans, Latinx and Hmong populations. At the same time, blue-collar workers (of all ethnic backgrounds) are recently being replaced with gentrifying professionals of higher income.
Community Activities and Services
Focal points for the neighborhood include Lowell Elementary School, Olbrich Park, Worthington Park, the bike paths, the Atwood Avenue and East Washington Avenue corridors, Woodman's supermarket and the Milwaukee Street Post Office. The Goodman Community Center and the Worthington Park Salvation Army provide a variety of community events and services.
Economic or Environmental Interests
My community was historically a blue-collar working class neighborhood. Over the years, the neighborhood has become gentrified, with segments of the population working well paying professional jobs in the public, health care, education and technology sectors. Other portions of the population are in low-wage, service, construction and industrial jobs.
