Cultural or Historical Interests
My community is made up of the Indonesian population in New York, primarily concentrated in Elmhurst. There are several undocumented Indonesians.
Community Activities and Services
My community gathers at St. James Episcopal Church, where a group of chefs and small businesses host an Indonesian food bazaar once a month. There are also supermarkets dedicated to selling Indonesian products, including IndoJava and Ok Indo Food Store. For Buddhist Indonesians, Vihara Parivara Dhamma Acala is a temple they might gather at.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Many of the degrees my community acquired back in Indonesia are not often considered valid in the United States, forcing them to take up jobs that are unrelated to their profession and education back at home. This results in the community being forced to work in various industries, "working off the books," or unemployed.
Community Needs and Concerns
There are so few Indonesians as opposed to other ethnic communities in New York, so not much is known about the community. Elmhurst is often considered a "Little Indonesia" because Indonesian festivals and events, restaurants, and supermarkets can be found in Elmhurst.

Danger: REPORT Sept. 19, 2024
Population: 1657

Cultural or Historical Interests
My community "Flatbush" is known for its vibrant food scene, including West Indian, Caribbean, and African restaurants. Neighborhood cafes and bars serve as informal social hubs. Kings Theatre is a historic venue where people come together for live performances, concerts, and other cultural events. Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts: A place where the community gathers for art and music performances. Churches, mosques, and temples are integral to the neighborhood, such as Flatbush Seventh Day Adventist SDA Church serving as community gathering points, especially for spiritual and social support.
Community Activities and Services
My community is made up if people who go to Prospect Park, a large and popular park where residents can gather for picnics, exercise, sports, and community events. Places like NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County and SUNY Downstate Medical Center provide access to medical services for the community. The area is well-served by multiple subway lines (B, Q, 2, 5) and bus routes, making commuting within and outside of Brooklyn easy. Numerous public schools, like PS 152 and PS 249, and private schools provide education for children. Brooklyn College is nearby and serves as a center for higher education.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Flatbush Avenue is a major commercial hub, with many residents working in retail shops, grocery stores, restaurants, and other service-based jobs. Small businesses play an important role in providing employment, especially for newer immigrants. Flatbush, like many urban areas, faces issues related to air quality. Traffic congestion along major thoroughfares like Flatbush Avenue contributes to higher levels of vehicle emissions, impacting residents' health. The area is home to a large number of small businesses, especially those owned by immigrants. Many of these businesses cater to the Caribbean and African communities, offering food, goods, and services that are integral to the community.
Community Needs and Concerns
In my community housing is a big issue. Rent has gone up tremendously and slowly the neighborhoods are starting to be gentrified. Right in the middle new apartments are being built causing the other apartments that have been there longer start to raise prices on tenants that have been there for years. Organizations like Flatbush Development Corporation offer various services, from housing advocacy to youth programs, enhancing the community's social support network. Stronger rent control and tenant protection laws are needed to prevent displacement. New affordable housing units must be included in any development plans to ensure long-time residents are not priced out.

My community is the Latino community in the South Bronx. This community has been in the neighborhood for 30+ years. The languages spoken are English and Spanish. Yankee Stadium is located in this neighborhood.
Community Activities and Services
The neighborhood is surrounded by 3 subway lines (4, D, and B) and various bus routes. There are community based organizations to provide daycare services, ESL classes, afterschool, and tutoring. There is one public clinic that provides different healthcare services for free or at affordable prices. There a few schools(public and charter) for grades K-12. There are 2 NYPL. There are 2 parks in the neighborhood. One is which is tailored for elementary age children. There are small businesses as well as chains. There is a public pool run by NYC Parks. There are supermarkets.

Historically, the neighborhood has always been a low-income community. Most people work minimum wage jobs. During baseball season, there are many job opportunities for the community at Yankee Stadium. Many of the community members are SNAP, Medicaid, and/or cash assistance recipients.
Community Needs and Concerns
My community needs access to healthy foods. Majority of the restaurants are fast food restaurants. Crime is a big issue in the community (gun violence and robberies). Not much is done to lower the crime rate. Politicians are not involved and invested in the neighborhood like others. The community could benefit from a community fridge and cleaner streets. There is too much litter and garbage on the sidewalks.

Cultural or Historical Interests
When my parents moved here in 1971, things were alot different than they are now. There are various ethnic groups among us, and over the years, even during my lifetime, immigrants have moved to this area.
Community Activities and Services
There are a handful of buses that are in the area, provided by the MTA, that provide acceptable routes to and from most places. Although the scheduling of such things could use a little tightening up...
Community Needs and Concerns
Perhaps it is simply due to living in NYS, but whatever the case is, it seems that we are paying more and more for less and less. Quality groceries are on occasion hard to come by, and with apps like DoorDash and UberEats increasing their prices via Service Fees (due to labor laws on wage in the state, which they ironically lobbied against), the cost of living seems to be at an all time high, even years after COVID.

My community is a middle-upper-class neighborhood for the most part, however, throughout the year, there's been a wave of rent-control buildings that are allowing many low-income families to move in. Many retired individuals live in my community. The area's earliest modern homes were built in 1917 off of Union Turnpike.
Community Activities and Services
My community is made up of many working-class families who have about 3-to 4 children. We have 2 big parks surrounding our community, Flushing Park, and Forest Park. We also contain public parks such as Hoover Park, and many middle schools, elementary schools, high schools, and daycares. Mainly all public and few private institutions. There are also a number of train and bus stations, including the E and F line, Q60, Q10, Q37 and Q46 buses, and the LIRR. Also, my community is situated in an area with many main highways that get you throughout all of New York City. And Maple Grove Cemetery, along with one of the county criminal Courts is part of my community.
Economic or Environmental Interests
My community is impacted by rising costs of living, even with rent control as middle-class individuals are moving in into the newer apartments.
Community Needs and Concerns

kronebusch_paf9100_intro_public_affairs_spr2023
Danger: REPORT Sept. 20, 2023
Population: 264887
climate infrastructure transportation environment coast
Cultural or Historical Interests
The south Brooklyn community spans different racial, ethnic, and religious groups. This region has been historically predominantly white, but that has been changing in the past several decades. While in this aspect it is diverse, as explained above it shares similar geographic and economic/development characteristics that mean this area has a significant amount of shared interests for public services.
Community Activities and Services
My community is the geographical region of South Brooklyn, where I grew up. This community is composed of several different neighborhoods, but is united by shared geography that means it is more remote/isolated from the rest of the city and borough, with more of a suburban culture and less access to public transportation. Subway lines are often not easily accessible, and the area is more reliant on cars and buses. Being close to the water makes Brighton Beach, Marine Park, Coney Island, the Marine Park Nature Preserve & Salt Marsh, and the shorelines important for this community.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Because of its remote location and distance from Manhattan, this area is more economically hyper-local. There are a lot of small businesses, and residents in South Brooklyn are less likely to commute into Manhattan for work. The tourism and amusement industry, via Coney Island, is an important economic driver for the area, dependent on the season. There is also a large nature preserve, Marine Park Salt Marsh Nature Trail, which is important to the community. Due to the area's proximity to the shore, flooding and storm damage are a big concern for much of the community, and Hurricane Sandy was extremely damaging to this area.
Community Needs and Concerns
Infrastructure, emergency management, and climate change policy are important shared interests. More public transit, both across Brooklyn and to the other boroughs, is also a huge need. Right now, these neighborhoods are split between different state assembly and congressional districts, but I think they should be in a shared district due to these common concerns and needs, such as economic and physical isolation from the rest of the borough and environmental vulnerability.

Economic or Environmental Interests

Cultural or Historical Interests
My community is made up of different ethnicities that tend to hide under insidious racism. Varying in different age groups with families living together or in close proximities creates generation bonds to the community as well as wealth.
Community Activities and Services

It includes parks and lakes for the community to gather and enjoy nature. it is small business oriented with local nonprofits that advocate and maintain the environment. maintains a 24 hour public transportation system.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Living near a body of water there are many floods that impact the community. Schools, hospitals, and child care produce most of the economy along with low-skilled jobs.
Community Needs and Concerns
My community needs more inclusive schools to address the cultural issues that prohibit certain businesses from opening. More social services to assist low-skilled jobs help workers with their socioeconomic status. Issue with current district lines it excludes parts that are predominately colored, excluding them from certain services and schools.

There are also fewer public parks and spaces in this part of Brooklyn, but being close to the water makes Brighton Beach, Marine Park, Coney Island, the Marine Park Nature Preserve & Salt Marsh, and the shorelines important for this community.
There is also a large nature preserve, Marine Park Salt Marsh Nature Trail, in the area, which is important to the community.
Community Needs and Concerns
Because of its proximity to the shore, flooding and storm damage are a big concern for much of the community, and Hurricane Sandy was extremely damaging to this area. Infrastructure, emergency management, and climate change policy are important shared interests. More public transit, both across Brooklyn and to the other boroughs, is also a huge need. Right now, these neighborhoods are split between different state assembly and congressional districts, but I think they should be in a shared district due to these shared concerns and characteristics, such as isolation from the rest of the borough and economic focus.

My community is split between historically affluent WASP demographic and a historically known for a rotating community that is immigrant based from Eastern European to Italian to Puerto-Rican to know broad Latin based that is slowly being gentrified by CUNY and Columbia.
Community Activities and Services
My focus community where it feels like the opening for the tale of two cities, “It was the best of time and the worse of time." The apparent contrast comes once you past the end of the second avenue subway. On one side you see rows of high-rise luxury apartments, countless museums, and well-groomed parks. On the other side there is rows of NYCHA buildings, poor infrastructure and heaps of garbage. Between the two the main gathering is our main street of the district where there is a movie theater, target and book store.
Economic or Environmental Interests
My community is along the East River so we do have a higher environmental concern in regards to water and we have two energy plants along the highway. Our air/light pollution is not ideal either but it’s not one of the deterrent to live in the neighborhood. On one side the main employment is white collar mainly real estate, wall street or general big business and on the other side it is a more blue collar and service worker jobs
Community Needs and Concerns
Both parts of the community main concern are public safety. Although majority are happy that the second avenue subway was built there has been a rise in homeless that loiter around the more affluent part of the neighborhood. The community consists of various types of Jews. Some have lived in the united states for many generations and some are recent immigrants. The most commonly spoken languages are English, Yiddish and Hebrew. Yiddish is spoken more in the northern part and Hebrew is more common in the southern part. Ages vary across the lifespan with a large emphasis on young children and their schooling.
Community Activities and Services
The community gathers and socializes in each other's homes, in synagogues, at community centers. The community accesses services at nearby hospitals or they will travel to hospitals in manhattan using the subway system or buses or by car. The community attends local yeshiva schools for educatiion until 8th grade. They also will attend Brooklyn College or more specialized accelerated degree programs.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Residents are often employed in the community itself as the community tends to be insular. There is an emphasis in the more religious mindset that young men spend their time after graduating from high school learning Talmud for several years (sometimes for life) and to not seek traditional employment. There is expectation from the rest of the community and from philanthropists to support this endeavor. As a result, unemployment does exist within the community with men who have not found the financial support needed to continue learning Talmud full time but who also do not necessarily have other skills that can be applied to traditional jobs.
Community Needs and Concerns
The community leans heavily republican for various reasons including viewpoints on Israel, the fact that the community does not send their children through the NYC public school system and feels like they should not have to pay into it and exclusively eating kosher food. While many have the belief that the Jewish Community is wealthy and does not require assistance, in fact there is a lot of families who are struggling with poverty but are too proud to accept assistance.. It will be effective to keep the community in the same district or perhaps to separate it between the northern, Ashkenazi Jewish side as well the southern, Sephardic Jewish side.

The Crown Heights community is a unique combination of longstanding Jewish and Black communities, quickly diversifying beyond just these groups. Prospect Heights is whiter and wealthier. The Franklin Ave community lives on the border.
Community Activities and Services
My community is situated on Franklin Ave at the crossroad between Prospect Heights and Crown Heights. There are plentiful restaurants to enjoy with the Brooklyn Museum and Prospect Park just a short walk away. There are several longstanding churches, mosques, and synagogues. kronebusch_paf9100_intro_public_affairs_spr2023
Danger: REPORT Feb. 15, 2023
Population: 37847
housing education Asian unaffordable
Cultural or Historical Interests
I believe that my community is primarily composed of young professionals who moved to LIC in order to have a quick commute to Manhattan. At this point, it seems like many work from home at least part of the time, but the area continues to draw people for the expanding entertainment options within the neighborhood and easy access to transit. I know that many neighborhoods tend to have an underlying resentment of gentrification, but I think that as a formerly industrial area, LIC residents might not have the same history of displacement, and instead be more okay with new buildings (we're in an area that allows for new development), as increasing supply is one way to bring down rent prices.
Community Activities and Services
I am not sure if LIC has the same deep-rooted sense of a neighborhood that areas like Astoria would have, where families have lived there for generations. I think major draws for LIC tend to be the waterfront by Vernon Boulevard, and the surrounding restaurants and breweries. There are abundant public transport options (and exceptional proximity to Midtown), so I think that this contributes to people leaving the area for socializing and accessing health and educational services.
Economic or Environmental Interests
I think that many people commute into Manhattan or work from home (completely or on a hybrid schedule). Some people might also work in the arts, as some buildings were less expensive before the more recent price increases. For environmental interests, I personally was very excited when curbside composting came to Queens, but I am not quite sure if others share that interest.
Community Needs and Concerns
As an area of many young adults and couples with young children, future educational offerings are important. However, from talking to (an admittedly small set of) neighbors, it seems like many people would leave the neighborhood (or even NYC) if they wanted to start families. In considering one’s future in LIC, there are worries about the lack of well-performing schools, as well as the high price of real estate for those hoping to eventually purchase a condo/co-op (coupled with the lack of proximity to urban green space).

Community Activities and Services
My community is a short walk away from downtown White Plains, hence why it has become the target of developers. Slowly, more and more community members are displaced and forced out of their homes into areas that are now charging double what they used to pay for rent in White Plains.
Economic or Environmental Interests
My community is made up of the Mexican and South American immigrant wave of the 90s, and a part of the African American community in White Plains. My community also includes first generation individuals, and we, along with the old time residents, are being affected by the incessant gentrification allowed by the City of White Plains.
Community Needs and Concerns
My community is need of affordable housing and rent control regulations. Due to the limited amount of available section 8 and affordable housing apartments in White Plains, applicants are waiting up to years before they can get a space. Additionally, lack of laws in Westchester regarding rent have resulted in rent overcharges and landlord abuse.

affordable Middle Eastern East Asian Eastern European Central Asian
Cultural or Historical Interests
My community is mostly made up of Eastern European and Chinese immigrants who came to this country for almost 30 years. This area has low density in contrast to the rest of the city.
Community Activities and Services
Many people complete their daily chores. They go food shopping, gather in restaurants and stay home. For most of us who work outside the neighborhood, we utilize the Brighton Line (the B and Q trains) during rush hours. Unlike other neighborhoods, the streets become empty by 8pm.
Economic or Environmental Interests
My community in Sheepshead Bay is located close to Brighton Beach, basically close to the water and beach with a higher wind speed in contrast to most neighborhoods in the city. Most people from all parts of the city come to Brighton Beach to enjoy recreation. This tourism industry benifts many Chinese and Eastern European business shops who happen to be located in the neighborhood.
Community Needs and Concerns
We need more transportation options for sure. As a new member of the neighborhood, we are extremely away from the city and those who live away from the subway would take a crowded bus to the B and Q trains. I was raised in Queens, where many transportation options are available. Unless we can expand express bus options into the city, access to the subway remain a problem. For now with politics, we are good with representation and ready for the new districts newly drawn.

Danger: REPORT Sept. 21, 2022
Population: 27343
parks transportation housing education environment
Cultural or Historical Interests
The population is roughly 48% Black, 31% White, 14% Hispanic and 3% Asian. The neighborhood has experienced gentrification in the past 20 years as the household income group with the largest share has shifted from less than $20k in 2000 to over $100-250k in 2019, according to NYU Furman Center's CoreData.nyc. Much of Prospect Heights has received landmark status as the Prospect Heights Historic District.
Community Activities and Services
My community values public space and cultural activities. The neighborhood is home to Brooklyn Museum and Brooklyn Botanical Garden. There are several small parks in addition to Grand Army Plaza and Prospect Park. Central Library offers many services for the community, such as cultural programming, business and co-working space, career help, passport and identification services, and more. The neighborhood also includes Barclays Center, a major sports and entertainment venue.
Economic or Environmental Interests
The main concern of the neighborhood is the development of luxury residences surrounding Barclays Center and extending from Downtown Brooklyn, as well as rent increases that have pushed residents out of the neighborhood. There was also concern with residences towering over the Brooklyn Botanic Garden which affect the plants growing there, but the City Planning Commission has since voted to reject the rezoning application. The neighborhood established the Prospect Heights Neighborhood Development Council (PHNDC), which operates Open Streets along Vanderbilt Ave in order to give residents increased access to public space and also increased traffic local businesses and restaurants.
Community Needs and Concerns
Historically, Prospect Heights was part of Crown Heights but real estate interests have drawn a line in order to make living in the neighborhood more attractive to people moving in. Though some parts of Prospect Heights are protected from redevelopment by the Historic District, the parts that are not protected border Crown Heights. This development has caused rent to increase which has thus pushed current residents east towards Crown Heights in search of lower rent. Since Congressional redistricting, Prospect Heights has been officially separated from Crown Heights. However, most of the neighborhood's population is Black, so this group's voting power is more limited with newly drawn lines.

Danger: REPORT Sept. 21, 2022

Cultural or Historical Interests
In my community, religion and spirituality is a thing of importance and as such, some members identify as Christians and others also identify as Muslims. The Ghanaian community is mostly an immigrant community and some are documented while others are undocumented. The ages of the members range from 0-70 years because the people above 70 years mostly relocate back home when they retire.
Community Activities and Services
I belong to the Ghanaian community of the Williamsbridge section of the Bronx. The people come together for social activities on the park in the neighborhood and also gather virtually to discuss issues concerning the community. There are trains and buses which are in close proximity to facilitate easy travel for the members of the community. The people also access health care services from Montefiore hospital, North Bronx Hospital and other private clinics within the community. Again, the members access education from Community Board 11 schools, Lehman College and Bronx Community College.
Economic or Environmental Interests
My community is an immigrant community and the women mostly work as Home Health Aide and the men also work as Taxi Drivers and Security Guards. The first generation members are able to have a United States education and such members work in a variety of fields with the most dominant profession being Registered Nurses.
Community Needs and Concerns
One challenge for most members of my community is that they are undocumented and they are unable to work and vote on issues. I will like to draw the attention of politicians to this problem and the need to provide immigration services which are culturally inclined geared toward getting documentation for such people. There is also an increasing rate of robbery in the community and the need to increase police patrol in the neighborhood.

Cultural or Historical Interests
My community of Bedford-Stuyvesant is predominantly and historically Black. Around the Great Depression, Caribbean and South American immigrants began settling in Bed-Stuy, joining the working class Black Americans and Irish and Jewish immigrants. The neighborhood was majority Black (35%) and foreign born Irish and Jewish (30%), at the time of redlining which earned the community a rating of D, or Hazardous, in the redlining maps: "Colored infiltration a definitely adverse influence on neighborhood desirability..."
Community Activities and Services
My community of Bed-Stuy has a strong sense of community. People gather and socialize right on the block, in the parks, in plazas, at churches and mosques. Fulton is always buzzing with activity. Healthcare is rather accessible, with a major hospital, urgent care, family health centers, and a few private practices. We rely on the A and C train, as well as several buses running North - South and East- West. There is a strong sense of community and pride in the neighborhood, even as the pressures of displacement grow in the past decade.
Economic or Environmental Interests
There have been a number of major rezonings in Bed-Stuy in the past 2 decades. This has created significant displacement pressures. In 2000 the neighborhood was 75% black, and by 2019 that dropped to 46%. Rates of unemployment have dropped from 18 to 7% and poverty from 36 to 23%. It is hard to tell how much of this improvement is experienced by the families who have been here for generations. The prices of rent in Bed-Stuy are unpredictable in comparison to Brooklyn and New York as a whole, reflecting the speculation driving the real estate market and displacement of the region
Community Needs and Concerns
While the economic indicators of Bedford-Stuyvesant as a whole have improved, the improvements are not evenly distributed. In the 1930s, Crown Heights and Bed-Stuy existed as a single District, District 8. Bed Stuy has since been separated into it's own Community District, District 3. But many dedicated Bed-stuy residents have more in common with District 8 than some of their new neighbors in District 3.

My community is composed of two. I identify with the Haitian community, the burden of being tied to historical trauma, poverty and being the definition of failed infrastructure in the Western Hemisphere, as they like to describe it. I carry a lot of pride to counter the perception that is constantly forced upon an entire nationality. I also identify with being Black. Raised in NYC, I was forced to keenly be aware of skin and how it impacts ones growth in most society. I carry a lot of pride in Afro heritage and I enjoy learning about different cultures that originate from the African continent. As well as liberation movements and socialism.
Community Activities and Services
People in my community gather at work. My family is my community and I feel like we are always working. I feel that the same holds true for most working class folks. We spend more time in our work place than anywhere else. It’s for work we use public transportation, we work to pay for our loved ones to go to school and we go for higher education in the hopes of being paid more for work. Everything centers around work and the ability to afford living. At least in this society.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Most residents work a 9 to 5 job. I consider it to be a new form of slavery because economic growth is so difficult. Rich only seem to get richer, middle class is growing smaller and the poor get deeper in poverty.
Community Needs and Concerns
The needs of the community would be lower taxes on mortgages, lower interest rates for historically disadvantaged groups, more reliable bus service to travel and more investments into the community.

transportation housing crime education affordable
Cultural or Historical Interests
My community is primarily Latinx (with large concentrations of Mexican, Puerto Rican and Dominican people) and Black. Though there has been an increase in white, more affluent people coming into the neighborhood over the last couple of decades. It can be argued that East Harlem, also known as Spanish Harlem, has resisted the level of gentrification seen in other neighborhoods in downtown Manhattan because of the high quantity of public housing in this neighborhood. My specific area is also a cultural hub with places like El Museo del Barrio and the City Museum located within walking distance. East Harlem is known for history of activism, Latinx culture and a blend of both disciplines.
Community Activities and Services
My community of East Harlem gathers at places of worship, Central Park and other smaller parks, shopping areas/stores, community centers, arts and culture centers, bodegas and barbershops and more. These are the major ones that come to mind.
Economic or Environmental Interests
2020 Census data shows that the median household income in East Harlem is approx.. $33.5K (half the amount in NYS), 32% of people live below the poverty line (more than double the rate in NYS), and only 32% of people have a bachelor’s degree or higher. These stats speak to the need to expand educational opportunities/access, minimize unemployment, and increase job readiness. Other economic interests include prioritizing affordable housing, deterring the effects of gentrification on small businesses that are being priced out by the fancy coffee shops, grocery stores, etc. Environmental interests include maintaining and expanding green community spaces, open streets and minimizing pollution.
Community Needs and Concerns
I would say that one of the largest interests is to make sure that lower income Latinx, Black and other ethnic groups are not priced out of living in East Harlem. To finish my thoughts on cultural interests, I want politicians to prioritize access to arts and cultural, especially for youth. That means maintaining cultural institutions financially accessible and funding arts programming in public schools and in community and senior centers. Lastly, I think it's important to keep East Harlem within the same district in order to not dilute Latinx voters and voices, and to have one City Council member representing and advocating for the needs of the Spanish Harlem community as a whole.

Cultural or Historical Interests
My community is predominantly Hispanic. Peekskill has a rich history, including being the first city in New York State to elect an African American mayor in 1984. Our artistic community is something Peekskill is very fond of and our artist population keeps growing each year. The architecture in our downtown sites like the Paramount and the Peekskill Coffee House are staples.
Community Activities and Services
My community loves to gather at the Peekskill Waterfront which has a beautiful view of the Hudson River. Our downtown area is also busy because most of our restaurants, healthcare services, small businesses, pharmacies, and food markets are located there. The children of our community enjoy playing in our parks that are frequently visited by people outside of our county.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Residents in my community work all over the place. I tend to interact more with the immigrant Hispanic community so I know that a lot of our community members work in farms, factories, restaurants, shopping centers, pizzerias etc. There are a number of small businesses in our area that employees our community members. The schools in our district are also popular employers. Growing up, the Indian Point nuclear power plant was something we were all aware of. Our city would send us brochures or general information about what to do in case of an emergency. The power plant closed in April of last year.

East Harlem is a cultural hub for latin food, and salsa music. Visitors can often see messaging in both Spanish and English and hear members speaking both languages in tandem. The Upper East Side similarly is filled with Kosher butcheries and synagogs.
Community Activities and Services
My community is made of young professionals and families. Members of my community have ample access to green spaces, schools, healthcare and a variety of fresh food options, most of these resources being within 20-30min walking.
Economic or Environmental Interests
My community is filled with working families and young professionals. Most people commute to work, either downtown or further uptown, accessing the Q or 4/5/6. In the morning, families are seen walking students to school and then heading to work themselves. Access to green spaces is a huge interest for most members of my community, folks are often seen partaking/volunteering at the 92nd st farmers markets on Sundays, or during community cleanups.
Community Needs and Concerns
Map drawers should be aware of the economic differences between these bordering communities. The median household income for East Harlem was $34,000 in 2019, whereas the UES's median household income was between $100-250,000. These stark differences have resulted in gentrification occurring in median communities (Yorkville) and the slow displacement of East Harlem residents.

Cultural or Historical Interests
The neighborhood does not have a general shared cultural or historical interest. There is a mixture of different religious and ethnic groups. The neighborhood has only existed for approximately 25 years, as that was when the townhouses were built.
Community Activities and Services
The community is a relatively isolated neighborhood that is next to the intersection between two important roads. There is not a natural gathering point for the community in the neighborhood beyond the nearby playground and clubhouse maintained by the homeowners association for the neighborhood. It is geographically far away from any natural gathering point, such as a town center or church.
Economic or Environmental Interests
The neighborhood is located near a series of forests that have been maintained for years. Recently, they have been cut down and reduced to build a new storage facility. As a result, there is increasing concern that storms can flood the lower parts of our neighborhood.
Community Needs and Concerns
The community is relatively isolated from other neighborhoods. Despite the lack of shared cultural or ethnic ties, it is a singular community that should be kept together simply due to the geography and lack of a cultural plurality in the neighborhood.

Danger: REPORT July 20, 2022
Population: 51449

Cultural or Historical Interests
One great strength of this community is its socioeconomic diversity, which mirrors that of greater NYC in many important respects (based on data from the NYC Population FactFinder). In terms of race/ethnicity the Latino and Black populations are slightly higher and the White and Asian populations slightly lower than citywide, but the overall racial/ethnic mix is quite similar to that of NYC as a whole. Economically, the community encompasses residents from public housing to luxury housing coexisting in close proximity. Although NYC is remarkably diverse it is also highly segregated by race and class, and it's rare to find communities like mine that embody the great diversity of NYC!
Community Activities and Services
My community benefits from many vibrant parks and public spaces. The most notable are Central Park and Morningside Park, but there are also numerous well-designed and generally well-maintained playgrounds, schoolyards, and recreation areas. It's a high-density area with many local shops and a lively street life, and it's well served with multiple bus and subway lines. All in all the community fits closely with Jane Jacobs's image of a healthy urban neighborhood, and a range of lively public spaces helps bring together a diverse population of varied racial/ethnic and class backgrounds.
Economic or Environmental Interests
The economics of the community mirror the diversity of NYC, spanning everything from public housing to luxury condos and low-wage service workers to highly paid professionals. The median household income is 10% below the citywide median and the poverty level is one-third higher than NYC, but there is also a greater percentage of high-income households due to higher proportions of workers in professions, education, social/health services, and the arts. Most of the housing stock was built before 1970 and more than 80% is rental. As in greater NYC nearly half of renters are officially 'rent burdened' (paying more than 30% of income for housing), which highlights a key economic concern.
Community Needs and Concerns
The greatest concern of my community is maintaining its rich diversity against the forces of gentrification. Most importantly this requires greater protections for/investments in affordable housing and affordable commercial spaces to support vulnerable residents and local businesses. The area extending from Frederick Douglass Circle along Central Park West and North is a prime target for further gentrification, but because the community spans parts of the Upper West Side and Harlem it has previously been split into different City Council districts. Instead, it should be unified in a single district (preferably without a White majority) to protect its rare and fragile diversity!

A few blocks down is Queens Center Mall, which has a wide variety of shops, including but not limited to Express, the Apple Store, Sephora, Gap, Victoria’s Secret, and Foot Locker. Queens Center Mall and Rego Center are hubs for activity within the community; not only do they provide residents with resources such as food, clothing, and groceries, but these are also the main areas in which people of the community and neighborhood gather to socialize.
Economic or Environmental Interests
The residents of this neighborhood typically work white collar office jobs. Since the 63rd Drive-Rego Park and Woodhaven Boulevard subway stations are so conveniently located, residents who typically work office jobs in Manhattan are able to commute back and forth with ease, typically with no transfers.
Community Needs and Concerns
What makes commercial Rego Park so unique may be its lack of needs and concerns. This is a fairly affluent community comprised of middle class and upper middle class individuals. The residents of commercial Rego Park have access to an abundance of resources.

Cultural or Historical Interests
The community is mainly white and Asian as seen by multiple Asian stores, such as H-Mart, and bilingual advertising used in the area. However, the area is also at increasing risk of gentrification since the more affordable smaller homes are being demolished in favor of larger homes at exorbitant prices. Some smaller celebrities own property in the area which possibly contributed to the desire to make larger houses. Unfortunately, most of these houses increase in size at the cost of a backyard or large driveway area, making parking more difficult especially due to the amount of teachers in the area.
Community Activities and Services
My community is in school district 26 and is home to multiple different elementary schools and a middle school which all have positive ratings. Most students live in the area or do not commute very far. Older students enjoy eating at our local fast food places or eating at our famous “Joe’s Pizzeria” which is on the main street connecting all the major schools. There are a variety of churches, the largest being St. Anastasia which also hosts many community events such as the carnival and serves as the end point for our annual Memorial Day parade. There are also other churches which conduct mass in specific languages, such as in Korean. Has three bus routes and close proximity to the LIRR.
Economic or Environmental Interests
The community has good connections to both the city and Long Island making it a good middle-ground for commuters. There is no particular job that people do in this area however, due to Little Neck Bay, the area is known for various shellfish such as clams.
Community Needs and Concerns
Little Neck is closely associated with Douglaston and oftentimes the lines differentiating the two are blurred. Due to this, the community is often hyphenated as Little Neck-Douglaston, which I feel is an accurate name for the area. However, Queens Community District 11 combines the two with Bayside, Auburndale, East Flushing, Oakland Gardens, and Hollis Hills, creating a large area. I propose that Little Neck-Douglaston all the way until the Nassau County line be its own district due to its uniqueness: proximity to the water, local parks, access to public transit, and access to Long Island and Manhattan. The other areas share likeness only along Northern Boulevard where the Q12 runs.

Economic or Environmental Interests
3. A large portion of the community commutes to Manhattan for work, making the community reliant on the Queens express bus service as well as the other local bus lines that connect to the NYC subway system and the Long Island Railroad. The environmental concerns in the community are mostly to keep the parks and the streets clean. Also, since the community is made up of mostly apartment complexes most of the garbage in the area is consolidated to large dumpsters within the complexes that tend to overfill and leave trash blowing around on a windy day, concerning residents.
Community Needs and Concerns
4. Map drawers should know that a community of renters exist within this area and that this community is diverse economically and culturally and has its own needs separate from the rest of the area. Lastly, the J train and the Q56 allow residents to travel, interact with one another, and the public space around, strengthening residents' involvement and engagement within Richmond Hill.
Economic or Environmental Interests
My community is located near many retail stores such as restaurants, salons, clothing stores, e.t.c, which all partake in the economic growth of this community and even contributes to the rise of employment present. My community is also known as a transit hub. With this being said, the air is very polluted, which leads to a decrease in the health of the environment and its residents.
Community Needs and Concerns
This community needs to be included within a single district to maximize its political power. This is because although Latinx residents make up the majority and renters make up 45%, both their issues and concerns are overlooked. Therefore, they have shared policy concerns and social services that focus on tenant rights, temporary assistance, and homelessness. So, by gaining political power they can fully assist the overall wellbeing of the people and strengthen the community like never before.

Pocket of Koreans in East Flushing

Population: 9903

Cultural or Historical Interests
My community is made up of first and second generation Korean immigrants. It was not until the 1970s that the Greek and Italian residents started to leave Flushing, in which the Korean immigrants started to take advantage of the cheap housing prices to settle down.
Community Activities and Services
The people in my community use Korean churches, Korean owned restaurants and businesses to gather and socialize. Also, to obtain community access services, the people rely on Korean pharmacies and pediatric centers to obtain services and care.
Economic or Environmental Interests
My community is mostly comprised of Korean stores and businesses in which residents are employed either at restaurants or the numerous churches within the vicinity. Also, there are some residents that have white collar jobs and work at Korean pharmacies or the pediatrics.
Community Needs and Concerns
When people think of East Flushing, the community is often mistaken as being heavily concentrated by Chinese people as it is relatively close to Downtown Flushing. However, it is essential to bring awareness that there is a small pocket of Korean residents in East Flushing that thrives on the coherence and the sharing of the same values, businesses, and ways of socializing/gathering.

My community is primarily Asian (South Asian, East Asian, South East Asian) and Latinx cultures. The area is very heavily populated by immigrants and families. The area seems to be made up mostly of middle aged people and children.
Community Activities and Services
My community is made up of people who utilize the spaces near Elmhurst Hospital. There are two subway stations that serve as the most heavily populated/utilized hubs for shopping and businesses, and there is a public park nearby that is used by all ages.
Economic or Environmental Interests
My area is primarily made up of small businesses and restaurants. 82nd street has lots of bigger chain stores, but almost everything else is a small business with a focus on ethnic cuisine and products. The Hospital is also an important aspect of the area as many people are employed there. People also use the space for the Jackson-Heights Roosevelt avenue subway station (and the 82nd street station). The community is not very clean or well maintained as it could be, and there are a lot of homeless individuals.
Community Needs and Concerns
The area is crowded and there is difficulty when it comes to parking space and affordability. Many of the people who live there have lived there for a while, but because of gentrification, the prices are slowly going up and people are being pushed out. There are also a lot of cars in the neighborhood, so traffic and parking become an issue for residents.

Cultural or Historical Interests
My community is fairly diverse so there are several cultural bonds. There is a pretty large Korean Community in the area so there are a lot of stores appealing to the Korean community including a Kimbab restaurant, two Korean Barbeque places, as well as a Korean supermarket. In the past there was a large Jewish community in the area but over the years that population has been dwindling.
Community Activities and Services
People in my community socialize at various different locations including the local library, some of the many NYC park and playgrounds, and various religious centers. The biggest area of socializing in the community is definitely Alley Pond Park, a fairly large NYC public park with an expansive running trail, baseball fields, a picnic area, and a playground. People also socialize at various elementary school playgrounds in the area to hang out or play basketball. There is also a Catholic Church called American Martyrs where the catholic community in the area attends, as well as a Jewish center.
Economic or Environmental Interests
A large portion of the community commutes to Manhattan for work, making the community reliant on the Queens express bus service as well as the other local bus lines that connect to the NYC subway system and the Long Island Railroad. The environmental concerns in the community are mostly to keep the parks and the streets clean. Also since the community is made up of mostly apartment complexes most of the garbage in the area is consolidated to large dumpsters within the complexes that tend to overfill and leave trash blowing around on a windy day, concerning residents.
Community Needs and Concerns
Map drawers should know that this community is fairly diverse economically and culturally but share some common goals. The road signs or lack thereof are a major concern of the community following a fatal accident at a dangerous intersection with no traffic light or stop signs. Better transportation is also a major concern of the community with many residents reliant on. the MTA bus service got get to work. Also, crime is a growing concern among my community with a few instances of violent crime occurring in the past few months.

Cultural or Historical Interests
The people residing in Jamaica Hills are from various backgrounds. The people I come in most contacts with are South Asian. However, there are several black and Hispanic individuals living in the area as well. Since there are four schools located in the area, many of the people within the community are tied with their connection to these schools whether they, their kids, or someone they know went to the schools. Muslims in the area tend to gather on Fridays and Jamaica Muslim Center gets permission to block off JMC way( a street that has been recently established) in order to allow the Muslim community to gather. Most of the people are immigrants or children of immigrants.
Community Activities and Services
My community is made up of the people that reside in, shop at, and attend school in Jamaica Hills. Most people hang out in front of restaurants, near the religious buildings (Mosques/Churches), and the schools. There are also two playgrounds where most of the children play after school hours. There are a few urgent care locations and general doctors, dentists, physical therapists, and pharmacies located in jamaica hills. Transportation is abundant in this area since buses and trains are readily available.
Economic or Environmental Interests
My community is full of drivers and there is heavy traffic since it is located near Grand Central and connected to Hillside avenue. This raises concerns for air quality and general safety for pedestrians. Additionally, the pond located in the Captain Tilly Playground is heavily polluted. People are discouraged from interacting with it because of how dirty it is.
Community Needs and Concerns
The community needs some kind of regulation for the traffic that happens on hillside avenue. The traffic there is very heavy and unsafe for pedestrians because there's a double-parking issue in front of grocery stores without parking. Most people are from lower-income households, making the prices of food and general necessities unreasonable to expect the residents to pay. Social services that make basic necessities accessible would help residents who struggle to afford groceries and other needs. Education and job security are a concern for many parents in the area, a service that educates children and parents on how to succeed in school and work would be greatly beneficial to them.

The Albanian community of Queens can be divided into two main categories: first-generation Albanian-Americans (people that were usually born and raised in Albania and emigrated later on to the U.S.) and second-generation Albanian-American (people that were born in the U.S., but their parents were born and raised in Albania. Regarding religion, there are only two religions that are followed Christianity and Islam. Also, the Albanian community in Queens can be divided into a few small groups based on ethnicity which are those who were born in Albania, Kosovo, Montenegro, or Serbia. Regardless of the ethnicity, everyone in the Albanian community speaks the same language which is the Albanian la
Community Activities and Services
People of the Albanian Community of Queens, usually gather and socialize in coffee shops, which is sort of a tradition originated in Albania. Gathering in coffee shops in the Albanian community is the equivalent of gathering and socializing in restaurants, parks, or churches for people in other communities. In addition, younger generations also socialize in parks, schools, libraries, beaches etc. In regard to accessing services, the Albanian community uses the same healthcare, transportation, and educational services as any other community in New York. The only distinction may be that people prefer to use cars as a mean of transportation rather than using public transport.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Most of first-generation Albanian-Americans are employed in jobs that require low level skills mainly because of the lack of education in the United States and the inability to speak the English language. Industries in which they are usually employed in are construction, food service, maintenance and janitorial services and transportation. Second generation Albanian-Americans are usually employed in jobs that require high level skills and usually a college degree such as financial services, healthcare, and education.
Community Needs and Concerns
I would say that is important to keep the Albanian community in the same district rather than separating it into multiple districts. This because people in this community tend to live close to each other in a way that is easier to support one another, especially first generation Albanian- Americans. Something that I assume my community needs is building a better and greater relationship with nearby communities.

What really defines us all is our shared disruption of our daily lives by the pandemic. 3rd and 4th years lived 2 years in an online setting and this is the first year sophomores actually attended college in person. A once in a 100 years pandemic disrupted everything and radically changed how we studied and worked. As Baruch is a predominantly business focused school, most students who attend there have a business mindset. Some of the surveyors didn’t tell me what job worked but some added extra details such as they work as managers, interns at big corporations, or work in financial offices. We share a culture of business and high-productivity in tandem with a commuter culture.
Community Activities and Services
One of the Key services defined by my community is that all the people I surveyed used the NYC Metro System. Its how they get around the city a majority of the time, and none of the participants owned any form of vehicular transportation. According to the Survey’s responses and the MTA system, Majority of the surveyees used the 4 train rather than the 6 with some outliers using the F train due to living in queens. Baruch community stores are defined by Fast food restaurants and food carts. People understand the commuter culture around the area so restaurants aren't a very defining feature. Students are always on the move and need places to get a quick bite to eat.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Many students at baruch college are interested in business so many people have jobs relating to business especially the seniors who are more career oriented. Students in the survey don’t have a job working in the school but work jobs in the Five boroughs. Even though according to the Rudin center, the area is ranked 14/177 for job access so there are plenty of jobs in the area. Students in internships are around the Zipcode but otherwise most students work elsewhere. But Many students do complain about the high-cost of living. While some students see their careers in the city, many want the education to get out and move to somewhere where there are better opportunities for living. NYC is one
Community Needs and Concerns
According to the students, crime is almost a negligible concern in baruch or around the campus. Many people don’t stick around too long and oftentimes go straight home after they are done with classes. According to the NYC Map of crime data, there are only 1.4 crimes per 1000 residents which is pretty average. Since Baruch is very busy traffic wise, and since the subways are nearby. Crimes don’t happen around baruch often or the students in the study felt no concern over it. What students do have concerns over are typically student problems, such as the courses they study. Seniors have it rough since they want to graduate and they are on a career track so they have to get everything in order

Cultural or Historical Interests
My community is very diverse with residents of Polish, German, Italian, Puerto Rican, Chinese descent. Ridgewood is also one of the oldest neighborhoods in all of New York City and is home to over 10 historic national districts. It is filled with brick rowhouse dwellings that are apart of the central Ridgewood historic district (one of the 10 historic national districts). These houses date back to the 1890s to the 1900s.
Community Activities and Services
My community is filled with many diverse eateries and shopping areas. From Italian to German to Dominican, there are restaurants scattered throughout the neighborhood that have been open for years. Myrtle Avenue also intersects into this community and has many small shops that sell clothing, shoes, hardware etc.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Ridgewood has many small businesses and family-owned stores. Many of the eateries around here are ran by families. There are a lot of blue collar workers that live in the area as well. A concern for this community is mainly problems with the housing in the area. There are many problems with utilities like heating and electricity due to the age of the houses.
Community Needs and Concerns
Ridgewood is right on the border of Queens and Brooklyn. There are a lot of cemeteries like All Faiths and Evergreen in and on the borders of Ridgewood. There are a lot of older citizens that live in this area and it has become hard for them to pay rent in their houses and get food. A lot of them benefit from senior centers and food pantries.

Cultural or Historical Interests
Many of the individuals in my neighborhood identify as either catholic or Muslim, especially many of the individuals I surveyed outside of my household. There are large communities of both religion in my neighborhood. Although they have many differing beliefs, it is very evident that my neighborhood is very united as well as interconnected. I say interconnected because there are many Islamic businesses, such as halal butcher shops that sell their products to many of the local supermarkets or grocery stores. This interdependence has brought my community closer to each other throughout the past few decades.
Community Activities and Services
In my community, there is a large church where many of the catholics in my neighborhood go to gather for religious purposes. As well as a Masjid that many of the muslims in my neighborhood go to for religious observation and to celebrate holy events or marriages, just as is done at my local church. There is also a large park called Highland Park where many people of all races and religions go to, there you can see birthday parties, picnics, and even sports games. Public transportation is all over East New York, just as healthcare services are.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Many of the individuals I had surveyed had said that they feel that pollution is the main concern. Individuals had complained that they are exposed to too much PM2.5 pollution from vehicles, especially since Jackie Robinson Expressway is very close to our neighborhood, as well as many two-lane expressways. Others had said that the dumping of garbage all over our neighborhood was also an environmental concern, because such dumping invites rats and other unwanted animals into the neighborhood. They also stated that they believe our community needs more job opportunities, they say that without such opportunities, the rising chance of our children entering a criminal lifestyle only increases.
Community Needs and Concerns
Many of the individuals I had surveyed had said that they believed the rising homeless presence in our neighborhood was a big concern, as well as the lack of job opportunities. Many had stated that the homeless presence in our neighborhood had made it very scary for their female loved ones to come home at night by themselves, a very reasonable concern that I too share. They had also said that the homeless presence had also brought with it the visible use of schedule 1 drugs in our streets. The lack of job opportunities was also a big concern, some respondents had said that some of their childhood friends had turned to drug dealing as a means of bringing in money for their family

Crotona Park East Community
Wilby_POL3000_Methods
Danger: REPORT March 31, 2022
Population: 36607
gentrification parks Latinx affordable construction
Cultural or Historical Interests
The demography of Crotona Park East is about 2/3rd hispanic and 1/3rd black with small but growing white and asian populations each around 1%. Along with the rest of the Bronx, it is also more religious on average than NYC as a whole; a larger percentage of its population identifying as christian. It is also younger on average than NYC as a whole, with roughly a quarter of the people living here being under the age of 18. Crotona Park East was the epicenter of the arson epidemic in the south bronx during the 70s which destroyed 80% of the housing market. The renewal project that followed created a slice of suburbia.
Community Activities and Services
As implied by the name of the neighborhood, Crotona Park is the most defining feature of Crotona Park East. That is the place you go to get away from people. Barbershops, bodegas, delis, hair salons, churches, pharmacies, and mechanics are the easiest businesses to find in the area. The primary method of public transit is the overground 2/5 train line along with seven bus routes that service the community, although that number is set to reduce to six given the MTA’s plan to streamline bus services across NYC.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Despite the rapid developments, the area still lags behind the rest of the city in several indicators: crime, poverty, education, unemployment, cleanliness, air pollution, health, obesity, substance abuse; all worse off than the average of NYC as a whole. What’s more, all of the city’s largest job centers lay at least an hour away via train ride. While substantial progress has been made in the past few decades on all those fronts, more work certainly remains to be done.
Community Needs and Concerns
The development of the area has largely been a success story, albeit one that if community and governmental leaders aren’t careful could displace the very people this community has served for decades. Gentrification comes with as many cons as it does pros, depending on who you ask, and there is no doubt that this community is gentrifying before our eyes. While Crotona Park East is riding the wave of progress, we need to make sure it doesn’t get swept up by the tide.

Millennials on the lower Upper West Side

Danger: REPORT March 24, 2022

Cultural or Historical Interests
The most obvious cultural interest is Lincoln Center. The great thing about Lincoln Center is that, during the summer (even through the pandemic) that have tons of free and low cost outdoor events. I’ve often gone to the opera screenings and Midsummer Night Swing events and with friends from the community. This past summer, they also turned the public space into a “lawn” with faux grass and lots of seating. There were frequent live performances and little food stands. People of all ages used it, but I certainly saw a lot from my community of millennials taking advantage of it. Central Park & Riverside Park serve similar purposes as gathering places.
Community Activities and Services
Restaurants and local coffee places seem to be benefitting from expanded outdoor dining, which has been wonderful for those of us working from home. In fact, I doubt if there’s a local coffee chain on the UWS without at least one millennial on the laptop at all moments! That said, Broadway is struggling with lots of storefronts still empty from pandemic closures. This is something that is lamented in the news and by candidates in the 2021 local elections. Rents are likely not helping. Transportation, notably the lack of Select Buses and the patchy A/C/E service, make commuting difficult. This is a sore spot, especially as the UES has better transit, but the only crosstown SBS is at 79th St.
Economic or Environmental Interests
The UWS is, mainly, outside of major flood zones, but flooding after major rain storms and hurricanes is still a concern. Central Park stays puddly and muddy for ages, it seems. Rising housing costs of concern. Purchasing a home for a family is next to impossible and rents, which became briefly decent during the pandemic, are rising sharply. And new builds continue to open with rents and purchase prices well higher than established buildings. Affordable options are coming available for seniors, but I should note that while there are more seniors here than in the City as a whole, there are also more 20-45 year olds--at least for now.
Community Needs and Concerns
If you believe the local papers, crime is a major concern. Shoplifting and bands of illegal ATVs both featured prominently this week. I don’t think these are massive concerns for my community though. Looking at 311 complaints, there aren’t actually any major problems. Similarly the NYPD’s reporting data shows relatively few thefts in the past month, though they did show a small increase year over year. Rising rents (for housing and commercial space) are a more critical problem, making the community feel atomized and forcing us to move out of the area. Increasing affordable housing, as well as expanding affordable shopping options (esp for groceries), would be a boon to the community.

Cultural or Historical Interests
The cultural bonds of my community would be the fact that most of the people come from a different country and they were not born here. The majority of the people that I've met have immigrant parents and they speak more than one language.
Community Activities and Services
My community is made up of mostly young adults. Most of them are students, or people who have just graduated and they are doing internships. They use the metro as their main form of transportation and they socialize in nearby bars or cafes for gathering and socializing.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Since most of the people that I live with are students or newly grads, they're looking for jobs at restaurants and cafes to save up money. Since my neighborhood is midtown, there are a lot of restaurants and cafes which make it convenient for them to work near where they live. Cold weather affects the businesses in a way that they need less staff since they have no outside sitting available.
Community Needs and Concerns
I think that the need of my community, like any other, is to have a clean neighborhood. Moreover, I would think that people of the same interests would want more opportunities for them to socialize and make friends since most of the people move in alone and they have no one to talk to. Since there is a large portion of the female population, the community would want for the streets to be safe at night.
