Pike-Monroe Pocono/Commuter Rim

DTL Drive - Test 1
July 14, 2021
Cultural or Historical Interests
Milford, the Pike County seat, is home to a vibrant artistic and literary community. In Monroe, cultural diversity has increased rapidly - a trend accelerated by the pandemic as remote or hybrid work arrangements have proliferated. Catholicism and evangelical Protestant faiths predominate, but other religions have a visible footprint.
Community Activities and Services
The Pocono Commuter rim marks the farthest reach of public transit between Northeastern Pennsylvania and New York City. The perception of this region as a vacation area is largely outdated. Although many homeowners are still part-time residents, Monroe and Pike Counties have become increasingly attractive as primary residences as home prices in the NYC metro area have risen and local services have improved.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Healthy lakes and rivers remain central to the region's tourism-related industries. Transportation is a key interest. Two bus companies currently largely control their respective commuter routes, and avoid competing directly with each other. Extension of NJ Transit train service into the region has been advocated periodically, but has never proven viable. Healthcare services in some portions of the area are strained by an aging population and shortages of key skills. Although property taxes are generally low, they are nonetheless a controversial topic, especially between retirees and families with school-age children.
Community Needs and Concerns
Our immediate goal in redistricting is to reunite Pike and Monroe in a Senate district. As the counties have become more similar and interconnected economically, they have been separated politically. This separation is most visible in the State Senate. The two counties were joined, until 1966, when pieces of Monroe began to move into other districts. The separation became complete in 2012. Currently, Pike is represented by Lisa Baker, who resides in Dallas, west of Wilkes-Barre. Her home and main office are 65 miles from us, but just eight miles from the Plymouth residence of Wilkes-Barre Senator John Yudichak. Two other Senators are much closer to us.

June 14, 2021
Community Activities and Services
My community is Hemlock Farms, a gated residential community with its own recreational facilities, public safety function and volunteer fire department. Most homes are still not primary residences, but full-time residents have increased over time as housing costs in NYC metro have risen and tolerance for long commutes has expanded. The pandemic has added many telecommuters to the full-time population. Located mostly in Blooming Grove and Delaware Townships, the community has little dependence on local public services but contributes disproportionately to the economy and tax base.

We are a large rural county containing 3 school districts, two of which are shared with neighboring counties. Carlisle, PA
Jan. 15, 2021
Population: 20246
Cultural or Historical Interests
Carlisle is a historically significant town that was founded before the US became an independent nation. It played a role in the Revolutionary War and was where the Whiskey Rebellion was organized. Carlisle also has a problematic history with Native Americans, including the Carlisle Indian School that was estate gentrify young Native Americans (including Jim Thorpe).
Economic or Environmental Interests
Carlisle — and surrounding areas — have I-81 going through or next to it. This highway is used heavily by semi trucks, impacting the air quality in our area. Additionally, with 2 lanes going in each direction in our area, the trucks make it dangerous for passenger cars, particularly in inclement weather and whenever there is low visibility (including night driving). While these trucks are moving goods people need across the country, but we need to find a way to make this safer for all.
Community Needs and Concerns
Carlisle is a divided community. There are a lot of very educated liberals here, in large part because of the three colleges located in town (Army War College, Dickinson College, and Penn State Dickinson Law School) and a lot of people without college degrees who are working hourly jobs (a lot at the various shipping warehouses in town, including an Amazon warehouse). Covid has made the divide stronger and harsher, particularly with the shutdowns impacting many of those hourly workers.

Butler Community
Jan. 11, 2021
Population: 36973
Cultural or Historical Interests
Butler is a very old town with most residents having lived here for several generations. As such, many families have very well established roots and local businesses that we all support and know of.
Community Activities and Services
Our community pulls heavily upon tradition and activities that have been held for years such as the Fall Festival, Butler Farm Show, and the Bantam Jeep Festival. These events pull in vendors from all over the area and it is common for everyone to visit these activities at least once, if not more.
Economic or Environmental Interests
My city relies heavily upon the steel and freight car industry with AK Steel and the former Pullman Park industries located in the heart of Butler. Environmentally, we are better off than some of the areas closer to Pittsburgh, as we have more state parks nearby, but still have room for improvement with air quality.
Community Needs and Concerns
Historically, my community has been oddly parceled out as the southern portion of our county is heavily commercialized while the northern parts are extremely urban. It is this diversity of needs that unites the county as a whole and provides balance, in my opinion.
