Economic or Environmental Interests
My community is home to the University of Oklahoma. It is an economic driver in central Oklahoma.
Community Needs and Concerns
Norman has concerns about the unhoused population many of whom suffer from addiction and mental health issues. The community is also concerned about voting power being diluted by being split between multiple districts.

Zachary Taylor Neighborhood
People Not Politicians
Community Mapping Drive
March 31, 2021
Population: 822
Cultural or Historical Interests
My immediate neighborhood (Zachary Taylor) is an old Oklahoma City neighborhood built up in the 1950s. There is a mix of white and black residents, skewed white and younger. Home prices (mortgages and rents) have risen such that there is some gentrification, but not to the extent of the more urban districts (Midtown, Plaza, Paseo, Deep Deuce). Our neighborhood is educated and has higher health incomes than neighborhoods to the east of us.
Community Activities and Services
Most of us would love to have expanded public transit options to access midtown, downtown, and the urban districts. The streetcar stops around NW 12th. Bus service is spotty. Bike and walking trails are in works with OKC MAPS funds, but more reliable bus service at more frequent intervals, with more stops extending up in the area of NW 12th to NW 50th from Santa Fe to May would be desirable.
Economic or Environmental Interests
The electrical infrastructure is old and in disrepair in the urban core of Oklahoma City. We experienced an ice storm in late fall 2020 that knocked out power for an average of 2 weeks because OG&E... 1) does not maintain its right-of-way with residential power lines and has not trimmed back trees often enough, and 2) has not made efforts to bury power lines in older parts of the city. But more importantly, this early winter storm likely occurred as an effect of climate change.
Community Needs and Concerns
Zachary Taylor is incorrectly zoned for the Oklahoma State House & Senate. Zachary Taylor should be in House District 88. Senate District 48 includes us as part of the historical black and rural eastern & northeastern section of the city. We should be in Senate District 46. At the federal level, Oklahoma Congressional District 5 is transparently partisan, fracturing Oklahoma County from culturally similar metropolitan Cleveland County (Norman) and most of Del City and Midwest City.

Cultural or Historical Interests
Many of my neighbors are immigrants, and many speak Spanish as their first language. I moved here in my mid-30s as a single professional working for a low-paying nonprofit, and now I have a family. Others in my neighborhood are like my family, too. People here are usually friendly. We take pride in our homes, even if they’re not the fanciest.
Community Activities and Services
A Catholic church is in our neighborhood, and I would bet a good number of neighbors are Catholic. I find community several miles away, closer to downtown, in arts districts. We make use of a decent neighborhood park, but it could be better. Another park within walking distance has so much litter, it’s hazardous to our toddler. Lots of people here have kids, and a good number of people take walks but keep to themselves. There isn’t a library nearby, but I frequently go to the closest ones.
Economic or Environmental Interests
My neighborhood is what I would consider to be near downtown/central OKC (10 minutes by car—an easy commute to work), but we’re west of I-44 and thus, lumped into far western OKC and much more suburban areas. I work at a university 2.5 miles away, and so do some of my nearby neighbors. Other neighbors work in education, construction, IT, and customer service.
Community Needs and Concerns
I am worried about the quality of schools here. This feels like an urban neighborhood, but I often don’t feel represented politically—I feel like we’d fit better with the urban core districts.

Population: 9406
Cultural or Historical Interests
Tulsa has a diversity of people throughout the City. The churches seem to allow these groups to use their church and facility to congregate and worship.
Community Activities and Services
Local churches in our area are very important to the community by giving them food, clothing, shelter (when needed). We have a great bus system that helps transport people around the town. We are blessed with three very strong hospitals throughout the City.
Economic or Environmental Interests
My community is located in mid-town Tulsa with parks, golf courses, restaurants, schools and is located around several apartment areas of all types of people. It is important to keep the parks and shopping areas updated to keep the community thriving.
Community Needs and Concerns
Tulsa needs to be more pro-active in the organizations to allow all diversity to participate in all activities, not limiting them to the different areas of the City.

Midtown Tulsa
March 25, 2021
Population: 4148
Cultural or Historical Interests
We have some beautiful arts areas that benefit the community. My community in Tulsa is known for the awful Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921. Black members of our community work tirelessly to try and rebuild and reunify the community that was burned to the ground. This has continued to be unmatched by other populations. While the legislative system is wanting to pass the ability to paint blue lines on roads for policeman, our one historical marker "Black Lives Matter" was stripped off the street.
Community Activities and Services
Many churches and nonprofits are very helpful to the communities in my area. A major concern that I have has is the fact that my community only has one domestic violence shelter in the entire city. As we know, this is a huge concern as numbers have skyrocketed even during COVID-19 as women and their children have continued to be battered. We NEED another shelter and source for women to go and be safe with their children and receive services.
Economic or Environmental Interests
My community is located near a large river that is resourceful for many people. Because it is near main roads, it tends to have some garbage and pollution around it. I am also located next to a couple of small school areas with very limited resources for kids to play on. They may have somewhat of a field of grass which is helpful, but no play or sports equipment to utilize.
Community Needs and Concerns
I want my community and people in power to stop acting like discrimination is not real, and work on recognizing it so we can reach healing. The health disparities in my community are also awful and need extreme attention to health care and access to healthy and affordable food.

Population: 28462
Cultural or Historical Interests
Our area is the premier Tulsa cluster destination for social and business activity due to walkability, proximity to tourist attractions, and density of retail and residential. Local attractions include Gathering Place, Philbrook Museum, Rose Garden and Tulsa Historical Museum. The surrounding neighborhoods are all historic neighborhoods with similar homes, mostly single-family. The Cherry Street Farmers' Market and the Brookside Farmers' Market are both attractions.
Community Activities and Services
Arkansas River, Philbrook Museum of Art, Utica Square shopping and restaurants, St. John's Hospital, Cherry Street business district and Farmers' Market, Brookside retail and restaurants all attract tourists and very busy community activities like holiday parades, runs, trick or treating, and socializing. St. John Hospital is an important part of the community, and the Tulsa Fairgrounds are close.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Arkansas River, outdoor activity at River Parks and Woodward Park, connected trails, downtown connectivity and professional businesses, high-end retail and restaurants/entertainment, restored 1920s homes, synagogues, private schools and churches
Community Needs and Concerns
The current House District 71 map is ridiculous. It irrationally and detrimentally segregates neighborhoods that share the same infrastructure issues, crime concerns, business, school, and recreational resources. HD 71 should be bounded by the southern edge of the Tulsa downtown inner dispersal loop (highway 64), the AR River, US I-44, and Harvard Avenue. It's nonsensical to throw Swan Lake to East Tulsa and Maple Ridge to Sand Springs. They have next to nothing in common. They belong in 71.

Economic or Environmental Interests
Oklahoma is a fossil resource based state. The GOP has a stranglehold on the state. They have passed anti renewable energy efforts legislation that makes it against the law to start any energy services entity outside of the established energy delivery companies existing.

Cultural or Historical Interests
We have a couple of nice, but small museums, one of which is dedicated to Native Americans. We also have a moderately new aquarium and a zoo. We have a couple small but historic concert halls. Native Americans are sparse despite our location in the country. We have a fairly large black community that is completely ignored by the white communities on the other side of the city. Latinx culture is present here and there.
Community Activities and Services
We have a few community areas that are very popular around town. Our public transport is desperately in need of expansion to help those is the poorer communities. Bus stops are common on the lower-class part of town but are sparse as you get into the upper-class areas. This makes it difficult for those in the poorer parts of town to get work in the nicer parts. There are a few parks that many people go to.
Economic or Environmental Interests
There is a river nearby that is dry most of the year. Our community is mixed and doesn't rely on a single economic product, but oil is very prominent here. We rely too much on fossil fuels and there is not enough interest in renewables
Community Needs and Concerns
Equal opportunity needs to be addressed.
