Community Activities and Services
My community gathers at St. James Episcopal Church, where a group of chefs and small businesses host an Indonesian food bazaar once a month. There are also supermarkets dedicated to selling Indonesian products, including IndoJava and Ok Indo Food Store. For Buddhist Indonesians, Vihara Parivara Dhamma Acala is a temple they might gather at.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Many of the degrees my community acquired back in Indonesia are not often considered valid in the United States, forcing them to take up jobs that are unrelated to their profession and education back at home. This results in the community being forced to work in various industries, "working off the books," or unemployed.
Community Needs and Concerns
There are so few Indonesians as opposed to other ethnic communities in New York, so not much is known about the community. Elmhurst is often considered a "Little Indonesia" because Indonesian festivals and events, restaurants, and supermarkets can be found in Elmhurst.

Cultural or Historical Interests
My community "Flatbush" is known for its vibrant food scene, including West Indian, Caribbean, and African restaurants. Neighborhood cafes and bars serve as informal social hubs. Kings Theatre is a historic venue where people come together for live performances, concerts, and other cultural events. Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts: A place where the community gathers for art and music performances. Churches, mosques, and temples are integral to the neighborhood, such as Flatbush Seventh Day Adventist SDA Church serving as community gathering points, especially for spiritual and social support.
Community Activities and Services
My community is made up if people who go to Prospect Park, a large and popular park where residents can gather for picnics, exercise, sports, and community events. Places like NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County and SUNY Downstate Medical Center provide access to medical services for the community. The area is well-served by multiple subway lines (B, Q, 2, 5) and bus routes, making commuting within and outside of Brooklyn easy. Numerous public schools, like PS 152 and PS 249, and private schools provide education for children. Brooklyn College is nearby and serves as a center for higher education.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Flatbush Avenue is a major commercial hub, with many residents working in retail shops, grocery stores, restaurants, and other service-based jobs. Small businesses play an important role in providing employment, especially for newer immigrants. Flatbush, like many urban areas, faces issues related to air quality. Traffic congestion along major thoroughfares like Flatbush Avenue contributes to higher levels of vehicle emissions, impacting residents' health. The area is home to a large number of small businesses, especially those owned by immigrants. Many of these businesses cater to the Caribbean and African communities, offering food, goods, and services that are integral to the community.
Community Needs and Concerns
In my community housing is a big issue. Rent has gone up tremendously and slowly the neighborhoods are starting to be gentrified. Right in the middle new apartments are being built causing the other apartments that have been there longer start to raise prices on tenants that have been there for years. Organizations like Flatbush Development Corporation offer various services, from housing advocacy to youth programs, enhancing the community's social support network. Stronger rent control and tenant protection laws are needed to prevent displacement. New affordable housing units must be included in any development plans to ensure long-time residents are not priced out.

There are a great deal of religious groups in the community. They attend Roman Catholic church, Baptist, Pentecostal, Church of God, Seventh Day Adventist Church, Synagogue, and Mosque. Brooklyn College is at the center of the community. In addition, there are many public schools at all levels: elementary, middle, junior high, and high school.
Community Activities and Services
It is not possible for me to answer this section with precision because I do not really know the people of the community. I usually speak to some people when I ride the elevator with them. Some work in the healthcare industry, the public school system of New York City , the Fire Department of New York City. Others used to work for the transit authority of New York City. I do not know where the children attend school. There are five bus lines in the community: B6, B103, B82, and B7, and B46. There are connected to B41, B44, B8, B35, B25, B17, B47, and trains 2, 3, 4, 5, D, F, B, Q, A, C. There are branches of Brooklyn Public Library that are located not too far away from the community.

Diversity Sanctuary on the tip of Queens Known as Queens Village
Sept. 10, 2024
Population: 812
transportation diversity crime environment suburban
Cultural or Historical Interests
When Queens Village was initially established in 1851, it was comprised of mostly rural lands and small communities from when the dutch had initially inhabited the area. In the late 19th century rolling into the 20th century, the construction of small homes came into effect with its first inhabitants of European decent. Following the Second World War, construction continued and the homes were inhabited primarily by post war veterans. It wasn't until the 1980s when the population began to diversify with different ethnic groups from South America and the West Indian countries.
Community Activities and Services
My community of Queens Village is comprised of a very diverse population of people compared to other small towns in Jamaica, Queens. With the LIRR in the center of town by Jamaica avenue providing fast commute west to Manhattan or east towards Roosevelt Field Mall, Bus routes which take you west towards the subway or north to Alley Pond park, and is home to various West Indian cuisine restaurants. In recent years, the city has made successful efforts in expanding accessible healthcare, and they are available for residents as well as other city residents.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Most of the residents in this community are either retired citizens, or they are employed west towards the city. During rush hour, Queens Village attracts several drivers from the eastern suburbs of Long Island. The reason for this is its free parking in the side roads. Where my community differs from the rest of the city, in the residential blocks there are no alternate side parking restrictions. So this benefits commuters that live east of Long Island so that they could drive and park their cars along the spacious roads, and contribute to the city economy by riding the LIRR from the station to Manhattan. Also, they park here and visit Alley Pond Park one of the largest parks in Queens.
Community Needs and Concerns
Many residents of my community have faced various assault and burglary incidents, and the alleged perpetrators were the either the patients at Creedmoor Psychiatric Complex on the north side of town migrants that are also being housed at there. This has been a growing problem since this community was generally always very peaceful, and this was generally never a threat like it has been. I would like for the city to invest in more treatment for the mentally ill that may have been forced out of the complex as a result of the flooding of migrants at this complex, and I would also like for them to develop better strategies for the crisis of the migrant population increasing by the day.

My community is comprised of a Latinx community that attends Our Lady of Lourdes Church. This Church offers education for young students, hosts religious events, and offers resources such as food, clothes, etc. This West Harlem community is also home to the City College of New York. This CUNY school allows thousands of students to gain knowledge and interact with the community to obtain a bachelor's Degree, master's Degree, and other certifications.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Since the expansion of Columbia began, there have been many changes in the demographic of residents and businesses in West Harlem. Rents and Sale prices are rising, and many locally owned shops have been unable to afford to operate in the neighborhood. The West Harlem community needs to create job-intensive businesses that benefit residents.
Community Needs and Concerns
Currently, the neighborhood is in the early stages of gentrification. There are rising rent prices, and large corporations are opening businesses in the neighborhood; causing mom-and-pop shops to close down and making it unaffordable for neighbors who have lived in the community the majority of their lives. The West Harlem community also needs to address the safety of the neighborhood and provide better education for its youth.

Cultural or Historical Interests
My community is the Latino community in the South Bronx. This community has been in the neighborhood for 30+ years. The languages spoken are English and Spanish. Yankee Stadium is located in this neighborhood.
Community Activities and Services
The neighborhood is surrounded by 3 subway lines (4, D, and B) and various bus routes. There are community based organizations to provide daycare services, ESL classes, afterschool, and tutoring. There is one public clinic that provides different healthcare services for free or at affordable prices. There a few schools(public and charter) for grades K-12. There are 2 NYPL. There are 2 parks in the neighborhood. One is which is tailored for elementary age children. There are small businesses as well as chains. There is a public pool run by NYC Parks. There are supermarkets.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Historically, the neighborhood has always been a low-income community. Most people work minimum wage jobs. During baseball season, there are many job opportunities for the community at Yankee Stadium. Many of the community members are SNAP, Medicaid, and/or cash assistance recipients.
Community Needs and Concerns
My community needs access to healthy foods. Majority of the restaurants are fast food restaurants. Crime is a big issue in the community (gun violence and robberies). Not much is done to lower the crime rate. Politicians are not involved and invested in the neighborhood like others. The community could benefit from a community fridge and cleaner streets. There is too much litter and garbage on the sidewalks.

Cultural or Historical Interests
My community primarily consists of African American and Hispanic residents, most of which are immigrants and first generation Americans. The languages spoken in my community are English and Spanish. There are Mosques and Churches since much of the community is either Muslim, Catholic, or non-affiliated.
Community Activities and Services
My community gathers around St. Mary's Park because it is located at the center of the neighborhood. Community members congregate in this park to host birthday parties, celebratory events, walk their dogs, take their children out of the house, play sports, or simply speak to other neighbors. The strip next to the park consists of endless fast food restaurants, small businesses, healthcare services, access to public transportation, places of worship and schools.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Residents are primarily employed in small businesses in the surrounding areas, retail, or fast food. Many community members own small businesses or choose to work in other boroughs. One of the biggest concerns that exists in my community is homelessness and unemployment along with pollution from the excessive use of cars and buses.
Community Needs and Concerns
Politicians should be concerned with the education system, violence, poverty, and infrastructure within my community. Considering that it is a low-income community, there is excessive violence that exists within it. Moreover, most, if not all, the schools in the neighborhood and surrounding areas are severely underfunded with high drop-out rates. There must also be more programming in the community that the youth can engage in outside of school so they can avoid the streets.

Cultural or Historical Interests
When my parents moved here in 1971, things were alot different than they are now. There are various ethnic groups among us, and over the years, even during my lifetime, immigrants have moved to this area.
Community Activities and Services
There are a handful of buses that are in the area, provided by the MTA, that provide acceptable routes to and from most places. Although the scheduling of such things could use a little tightening up...
Community Needs and Concerns
Perhaps it is simply due to living in NYS, but whatever the case is, it seems that we are paying more and more for less and less. Quality groceries are on occasion hard to come by, and with apps like DoorDash and UberEats increasing their prices via Service Fees (due to labor laws on wage in the state, which they ironically lobbied against), the cost of living seems to be at an all time high, even years after COVID.

My community is made up of many working-class families who have about 3-to 4 children. We have 2 big parks surrounding our community, Flushing Park, and Forest Park. We also contain public parks such as Hoover Park, and many middle schools, elementary schools, high schools, and daycares. Mainly all public and few private institutions. There are also a number of train and bus stations, including the E and F line, Q60, Q10, Q37 and Q46 buses, and the LIRR. Also, my community is situated in an area with many main highways that get you throughout all of New York City. And Maple Grove Cemetery, along with one of the county criminal Courts is part of my community.
Economic or Environmental Interests
My community is impacted by rising costs of living, even with rent control as middle-class individuals are moving in into the newer apartments.
Community Needs and Concerns
My community needs safer spaces for younger generations. With the post-pandemic issues, there's been a lot of danger and homelessness very present in the street causing it to be more dangerous. And many students and families walk by these areas constantly.

Cultural or Historical Interests
The south Brooklyn community spans different racial, ethnic, and religious groups. This region has been historically predominantly white, but that has been changing in the past several decades. While in this aspect it is diverse, as explained above it shares similar geographic and economic/development characteristics that mean this area has a significant amount of shared interests for public services.
Community Activities and Services
My community is the geographical region of South Brooklyn, where I grew up. This community is composed of several different neighborhoods, but is united by shared geography that means it is more remote/isolated from the rest of the city and borough, with more of a suburban culture and less access to public transportation. Subway lines are often not easily accessible, and the area is more reliant on cars and buses. Being close to the water makes Brighton Beach, Marine Park, Coney Island, the Marine Park Nature Preserve & Salt Marsh, and the shorelines important for this community.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Because of its remote location and distance from Manhattan, this area is more economically hyper-local. There are a lot of small businesses, and residents in South Brooklyn are less likely to commute into Manhattan for work. The tourism and amusement industry, via Coney Island, is an important economic driver for the area, dependent on the season. There is also a large nature preserve, Marine Park Salt Marsh Nature Trail, which is important to the community. Due to the area's proximity to the shore, flooding and storm damage are a big concern for much of the community, and Hurricane Sandy was extremely damaging to this area.
Community Needs and Concerns
Infrastructure, emergency management, and climate change policy are important shared interests. More public transit, both across Brooklyn and to the other boroughs, is also a huge need. Right now, these neighborhoods are split between different state assembly and congressional districts, but I think they should be in a shared district due to these common concerns and needs, such as economic and physical isolation from the rest of the borough and environmental vulnerability.

My community of interest includes services such as two public libraries that can be easily access by members of the community. There is also several place of worship in the community that serves various religions and offer several food pantries throughout the month. The community also has P.S. 127 Aerospace Science Magnet School that ranges from grades Pk-SE. There is also a park where families come together one day during the summer to have an event (family day). The community has a trade fair supermarket which everyone in the community goes to for all their groceries.
Economic or Environmental Interests
My community is in East Elmhurst close by LaGuardia airport therefore, it can be very noisy as the planes are going by. Most of the residents in the community go to work in the city since the community does not have much job opportunities. The cost of houses in the community has drastically increased causing rent and property tax to be very high. Residents in the community have been forced to relocate which means that not a lot of people can afford to live in the community for as long as they want.
Community Needs and Concerns
My community needs be to developed and improved. The schools and libraries should be improved by upgrading the building and devices. There should be some new open spaces and recreational activities/facilities added to the community.

Economic or Environmental Interests
Living near a body of water there are many floods that impact the community. Schools, hospitals, and child care produce most of the economy along with low-skilled jobs.
Community Needs and Concerns

Cultural or Historical Interests
The community is bonded by it's strong immigrant roots. There are people from countries from almost all over the world within one block. The Brooklyn Children's Museum and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden are just a couple of places of culture and historical interest in the community.
Community Activities and Services
There a lots of places to meet with family and friends in my community. One of the most popular spots is Prospect Park where you'll always find people day and night walking their dog, running/walking, bird watching, even parting or roller skating. There's even African drumming and other cultural groups who come out to perform ceremonies. Transportation is easily accessible by way of the B35/B15/B41 buses which connects to the B/Q lines of the subway. Places of worship are within reach of transportation where you can find mosques, churches, synagogues and temples. Nonprofit organizations are well known in the community such as CAMBA, Caribbean Women's Health Association.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Most residents are employed within the healthcare field as Home Health Aides (HHA), Certified Nurses Aide (CNAs) and License Practical Nurses (LPNs) and social services field such as with the Human Resources Administration (HRA) and Administration of Children Services (ACS) to name a few. Sanitation issues continue to be a main environmental concern within district 9.
Community Needs and Concerns
Politicians should be aware of the financial background of the community when designating housing and try to provide affordable housing for the majority of people who are not high income earners. The community is experiencing a high level of gentrification which has some nonprofit groups fighting back and working with churches and political figures within the community.

Crown Heights is a neighborhood in the central portion of the New York City borough of Brooklyn. The main thoroughfare through this neighborhood is Eastern Parkway, a tree-lined boulevard designed by Frederick Law Olmsted extending two miles (3 km) east-west. Typical Crown Heights. The 1970s and 1980s was a time of demographic movement for Crown Heights, with many of the Jewish residents moving out to Flatbush, Williamsburg, and Boro Park and the African American community moving in. 1978. New York has the largest African-American population in the United States. After the A-train extended service from Manhattan to Brooklyn, many African-Americans relocated to the Bedford-Stuyvesant area.
Community Activities and Services
Crown Heights Brooklyn, today know for neighborhoods with tree-lined streets with beautiful townhomes and brownstones, the many museums and cultural institutions in the neighborhood, and mix of great dining and bar options. Marked by brownstones and Victorian mansions, Crown Heights is an evolving area where Caribbean and kosher eateries share streets with trendy cafes and DJ-fueled bars. While the neighborhood is rapidly gentrifying, the Caribbean and Hasidic Jewish communities of Brooklyn’s sprawling Crown Heights neighborhood is known for its West Indian population and the community’s annual parade on Labor Day, a festival of feather headdresses that dances down Eastern Parkway.

A lot fo times on Sunday mornings you will see a lot of families getting ready to head to church.
Community Activities and Services
People in this neighborhood gather a lot in the summer with their own families and neighbors. Most of the time it’s holiday dinners or barbecues in the summer. Most people take the subway so that is the main form of transportation there. The bus stops are 5 minutes away and train stops are 10 minutes away.

The community consists of various types of Jews. Some have lived in the united states for many generations and some are recent immigrants. The most commonly spoken languages are English, Yiddish and Hebrew. Yiddish is spoken more in the northern part and Hebrew is more common in the southern part. Ages vary across the lifespan with a large emphasis on young children and their schooling.
Community Activities and Services
The community gathers and socializes in each other's homes, in synagogues, at community centers. The community accesses services at nearby hospitals or they will travel to hospitals in manhattan using the subway system or buses or by car. The community attends local yeshiva schools for educatiion until 8th grade. They also will attend Brooklyn College or more specialized accelerated degree programs.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Residents are often employed in the community itself as the community tends to be insular. There is an emphasis in the more religious mindset that young men spend their time after graduating from high school learning Talmud for several years (sometimes for life) and to not seek traditional employment. There is expectation from the rest of the community and from philanthropists to support this endeavor. As a result, unemployment does exist within the community with men who have not found the financial support needed to continue learning Talmud full time but who also do not necessarily have other skills that can be applied to traditional jobs.
Community Needs and Concerns
The community leans heavily republican for various reasons including viewpoints on Israel, the fact that the community does not send their children through the NYC public school system and feels like they should not have to pay into it and exclusively eating kosher food. While many have the belief that the Jewish Community is wealthy and does not require assistance, in fact there is a lot of families who are struggling with poverty but are too proud to accept assistance.. It will be effective to keep the community in the same district or perhaps to separate it between the northern, Ashkenazi Jewish side as well the southern, Sephardic Jewish side.

The Crown Heights community is a unique combination of longstanding Jewish and Black communities, quickly diversifying beyond just these groups. Prospect Heights is whiter and wealthier. The Franklin Ave community lives on the border.
Community Activities and Services
My community is situated on Franklin Ave at the crossroad between Prospect Heights and Crown Heights. There are plentiful restaurants to enjoy with the Brooklyn Museum and Prospect Park just a short walk away. There are several longstanding churches, mosques, and synagogues. Manhattan and other areas of Brooklyn are easily accessible through the 2345 and AC trains.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Many of my peers in the neighborhood commute to Manhattan for work (or school). It takes me less than 20 minutes to get to work in FiDi. The train into Manhattan contains predominantly people of color where I get on, and then gets whiter with each stop closer to Manhattan.I am not aware of any particular environmental concerns besides the standard general concerns and desire to protect our limited green space.
Community Needs and Concerns
Biggest concerns in my neighborhood are around gentrification. Rent prices are increasing and more young professionals are moving in, displacing black communities and small businesses that have lived and operated there for a long time.

Feb. 15, 2023

Cultural or Historical Interests
I believe that my community is primarily composed of young professionals who moved to LIC in order to have a quick commute to Manhattan. At this point, it seems like many work from home at least part of the time, but the area continues to draw people for the expanding entertainment options within the neighborhood and easy access to transit. I know that many neighborhoods tend to have an underlying resentment of gentrification, but I think that as a formerly industrial area, LIC residents might not have the same history of displacement, and instead be more okay with new buildings (we're in an area that allows for new development), as increasing supply is one way to bring down rent prices.
Community Activities and Services
I am not sure if LIC has the same deep-rooted sense of a neighborhood that areas like Astoria would have, where families have lived there for generations. I think major draws for LIC tend to be the waterfront by Vernon Boulevard, and the surrounding restaurants and breweries. There are abundant public transport options (and exceptional proximity to Midtown), so I think that this contributes to people leaving the area for socializing and accessing health and educational services.
Economic or Environmental Interests
I think that many people commute into Manhattan or work from home (completely or on a hybrid schedule). Some people might also work in the arts, as some buildings were less expensive before the more recent price increases. For environmental interests, I personally was very excited when curbside composting came to Queens, but I am not quite sure if others share that interest.
Community Needs and Concerns
As an area of many young adults and couples with young children, future educational offerings are important. However, from talking to (an admittedly small set of) neighbors, it seems like many people would leave the neighborhood (or even NYC) if they wanted to start families. In considering one’s future in LIC, there are worries about the lack of well-performing schools, as well as the high price of real estate for those hoping to eventually purchase a condo/co-op (coupled with the lack of proximity to urban green space).

Community Activities and Services
My community is a short walk away from downtown White Plains, hence why it has become the target of developers. Slowly, more and more community members are displaced and forced out of their homes into areas that are now charging double what they used to pay for rent in White Plains.
Economic or Environmental Interests
My community is made up of the Mexican and South American immigrant wave of the 90s, and a part of the African American community in White Plains. My community also includes first generation individuals, and we, along with the old time residents, are being affected by the incessant gentrification allowed by the City of White Plains.
Community Needs and Concerns
My community is need of affordable housing and rent control regulations. Due to the limited amount of available section 8 and affordable housing apartments in White Plains, applicants are waiting up to years before they can get a space. Additionally, lack of laws in Westchester regarding rent have resulted in rent overcharges and landlord abuse.

Cultural or Historical Interests
East Elmhurst is a diverse community in northwest queens. It has historic landmarks, such as the former home of famous American musician, Louis Armstrong. There is a large Muslim population with people from Egypt, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and other Middle East and Southeast Asian nations. There is also a strong Latin American community, namely Ecuadorian, El Salvadorian, and Colombian. These groups have a grown and spread from neighboring Jackson Heights. There is even a Colombian heritage parade every summer. Some pockets of older European immigrants still remain, particularly people from Greece. The Greek and Egyptian communities are also very significant in neighboring Astoria and spread.
Community Activities and Services
East Elmhurst has parks, playgrounds, and mosques and churches. Major avenues like 31st Ave, Northern Blvd and Astoria Blvd have restaurants, salons, libraries, professional offices, and schools. Buses are easily accessible, as are taxis. The subways and railroads are about a mile away. LaGuardia Airport is also located in East Elmhurst.
Economic or Environmental Interests
East Elmhurst is a working and middle class neighborhood. It is mainly residential with some shopping and business centers along 31st Ave and Northern Blvd. LaGuardia airport is located in the East Elmhurst zip codes, as are several airport hotels and motels. Export/import and logistics companies such as UPS, FedEx and Amazon also have warehouses and fleets of trucks housed near the airport. Some airport motels have been converted into family or men's shelters in recent years. In 2021, Hurricane Ida caused major flooding in low lying areas. Many homes were damaged and at least 3 people died. Many streets have seen improvements since and the city continues that work today.
Community Needs and Concerns
Hurricane Ida brought attention to the housing and infrastucture needs of East Elmhurst and surrounding neighborhoods. There are still many illegal basement apartments which become dangerous during a flood. There is also a need for more grocery stores with better quality produce. One store shut down this year and that left many households, particularly the elderly, without a market within walking distance. The elderly need more resources to help live safely in their homes. Many are not aware of the resources which already exist and may not speak English

Community Activities and Services
Many people complete their daily chores. They go food shopping, gather in restaurants and stay home. For most of us who work outside the neighborhood, we utilize the Brighton Line (the B and Q trains) during rush hours. Unlike other neighborhoods, the streets become empty by 8pm.
Economic or Environmental Interests
My community in Sheepshead Bay is located close to Brighton Beach, basically close to the water and beach with a higher wind speed in contrast to most neighborhoods in the city. Most people from all parts of the city come to Brighton Beach to enjoy recreation. This tourism industry benifts many Chinese and Eastern European business shops who happen to be located in the neighborhood.
Community Needs and Concerns
We need more transportation options for sure. As a new member of the neighborhood, we are extremely away from the city and those who live away from the subway would take a crowded bus to the B and Q trains. I was raised in Queens, where many transportation options are available. Unless we can expand express bus options into the city, access to the subway remain a problem. For now with politics, we are good with representation and ready for the new districts newly drawn.

Cultural or Historical Interests
The population is roughly 48% Black, 31% White, 14% Hispanic and 3% Asian. The neighborhood has experienced gentrification in the past 20 years as the household income group with the largest share has shifted from less than $20k in 2000 to over $100-250k in 2019, according to NYU Furman Center's CoreData.nyc. Much of Prospect Heights has received landmark status as the Prospect Heights Historic District.
Community Activities and Services
My community values public space and cultural activities. The neighborhood is home to Brooklyn Museum and Brooklyn Botanical Garden. There are several small parks in addition to Grand Army Plaza and Prospect Park. Central Library offers many services for the community, such as cultural programming, business and co-working space, career help, passport and identification services, and more. The neighborhood also includes Barclays Center, a major sports and entertainment venue.
Economic or Environmental Interests
The main concern of the neighborhood is the development of luxury residences surrounding Barclays Center and extending from Downtown Brooklyn, as well as rent increases that have pushed residents out of the neighborhood. There was also concern with residences towering over the Brooklyn Botanic Garden which affect the plants growing there, but the City Planning Commission has since voted to reject the rezoning application. The neighborhood established the Prospect Heights Neighborhood Development Council (PHNDC), which operates Open Streets along Vanderbilt Ave in order to give residents increased access to public space and also increased traffic local businesses and restaurants.
Community Needs and Concerns
Historically, Prospect Heights was part of Crown Heights but real estate interests have drawn a line in order to make living in the neighborhood more attractive to people moving in. Though some parts of Prospect Heights are protected from redevelopment by the Historic District, the parts that are not protected border Crown Heights. This development has caused rent to increase which has thus pushed current residents east towards Crown Heights in search of lower rent. Since Congressional redistricting, Prospect Heights has been officially separated from Crown Heights. However, most of the neighborhood's population is Black, so this group's voting power is more limited with newly drawn lines.

My community is an immigrant community and the women mostly work as Home Health Aide and the men also work as Taxi Drivers and Security Guards. The first generation members are able to have a United States education and such members work in a variety of fields with the most dominant profession being Registered Nurses.
Community Needs and Concerns
One challenge for most members of my community is that they are undocumented and they are unable to work and vote on issues. I will like to draw the attention of politicians to this problem and the need to provide immigration services which are culturally inclined geared toward getting documentation for such people. There is also an increasing rate of robbery in the community and the need to increase police patrol in the neighborhood.

Cultural or Historical Interests
My community of Bedford-Stuyvesant is predominantly and historically Black. Around the Great Depression, Caribbean and South American immigrants began settling in Bed-Stuy, joining the working class Black Americans and Irish and Jewish immigrants. The neighborhood was majority Black (35%) and foreign born Irish and Jewish (30%), at the time of redlining which earned the community a rating of D, or Hazardous, in the redlining maps: "Colored infiltration a definitely adverse influence on neighborhood desirability..."
Community Activities and Services
My community of Bed-Stuy has a strong sense of community. People gather and socialize right on the block, in the parks, in plazas, at churches and mosques. Fulton is always buzzing with activity. Healthcare is rather accessible, with a major hospital, urgent care, family health centers, and a few private practices. We rely on the A and C train, as well as several buses running North - South and East- West. There is a strong sense of community and pride in the neighborhood, even as the pressures of displacement grow in the past decade.
Economic or Environmental Interests
There have been a number of major rezonings in Bed-Stuy in the past 2 decades. This has created significant displacement pressures. In 2000 the neighborhood was 75% black, and by 2019 that dropped to 46%. Rates of unemployment have dropped from 18 to 7% and poverty from 36 to 23%. It is hard to tell how much of this improvement is experienced by the families who have been here for generations. The prices of rent in Bed-Stuy are unpredictable in comparison to Brooklyn and New York as a whole, reflecting the speculation driving the real estate market and displacement of the region
Community Needs and Concerns
While the economic indicators of Bedford-Stuyvesant as a whole have improved, the improvements are not evenly distributed. In the 1930s, Crown Heights and Bed-Stuy existed as a single District, District 8. Bed Stuy has since been separated into it's own Community District, District 3. But many dedicated Bed-stuy residents have more in common with District 8 than some of their new neighbors in District 3.

My community is composed of two. I identify with the Haitian community, the burden of being tied to historical trauma, poverty and being the definition of failed infrastructure in the Western Hemisphere, as they like to describe it. I carry a lot of pride to counter the perception that is constantly forced upon an entire nationality. I also identify with being Black. Raised in NYC, I was forced to keenly be aware of skin and how it impacts ones growth in most society. I carry a lot of pride in Afro heritage and I enjoy learning about different cultures that originate from the African continent. As well as liberation movements and socialism.
Community Activities and Services
People in my community gather at work. My family is my community and I feel like we are always working. I feel that the same holds true for most working class folks. We spend more time in our work place than anywhere else. It’s for work we use public transportation, we work to pay for our loved ones to go to school and we go for higher education in the hopes of being paid more for work. Everything centers around work and the ability to afford living. At least in this society.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Most residents work a 9 to 5 job. I consider it to be a new form of slavery because economic growth is so difficult. Rich only seem to get richer, middle class is growing smaller and the poor get deeper in poverty.
Community Needs and Concerns
The needs of the community would be lower taxes on mortgages, lower interest rates for historically disadvantaged groups, more reliable bus service to travel and more investments into the community.

Cultural or Historical Interests
My community is primarily Latinx (with large concentrations of Mexican, Puerto Rican and Dominican people) and Black. Though there has been an increase in white, more affluent people coming into the neighborhood over the last couple of decades. It can be argued that East Harlem, also known as Spanish Harlem, has resisted the level of gentrification seen in other neighborhoods in downtown Manhattan because of the high quantity of public housing in this neighborhood. My specific area is also a cultural hub with places like El Museo del Barrio and the City Museum located within walking distance. East Harlem is known for history of activism, Latinx culture and a blend of both disciplines.
Community Activities and Services
My community of East Harlem gathers at places of worship, Central Park and other smaller parks, shopping areas/stores, community centers, arts and culture centers, bodegas and barbershops and more. These are the major ones that come to mind.
Economic or Environmental Interests
2020 Census data shows that the median household income in East Harlem is approx.. $33.5K (half the amount in NYS), 32% of people live below the poverty line (more than double the rate in NYS), and only 32% of people have a bachelor’s degree or higher. These stats speak to the need to expand educational opportunities/access, minimize unemployment, and increase job readiness. Other economic interests include prioritizing affordable housing, deterring the effects of gentrification on small businesses that are being priced out by the fancy coffee shops, grocery stores, etc. Environmental interests include maintaining and expanding green community spaces, open streets and minimizing pollution.
Community Needs and Concerns
I would say that one of the largest interests is to make sure that lower income Latinx, Black and other ethnic groups are not priced out of living in East Harlem. To finish my thoughts on cultural interests, I want politicians to prioritize access to arts and cultural, especially for youth. That means maintaining cultural institutions financially accessible and funding arts programming in public schools and in community and senior centers. Lastly, I think it's important to keep East Harlem within the same district in order to not dilute Latinx voters and voices, and to have one City Council member representing and advocating for the needs of the Spanish Harlem community as a whole.

My community is predominantly Hispanic. Peekskill has a rich history, including being the first city in New York State to elect an African American mayor in 1984. Our artistic community is something Peekskill is very fond of and our artist population keeps growing each year. The architecture in our downtown sites like the Paramount and the Peekskill Coffee House are staples.
Community Activities and Services
My community loves to gather at the Peekskill Waterfront which has a beautiful view of the Hudson River. Our downtown area is also busy because most of our restaurants, healthcare services, small businesses, pharmacies, and food markets are located there. The children of our community enjoy playing in our parks that are frequently visited by people outside of our county.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Residents in my community work all over the place. I tend to interact more with the immigrant Hispanic community so I know that a lot of our community members work in farms, factories, restaurants, shopping centers, pizzerias etc. There are a number of small businesses in our area that employees our community members. The schools in our district are also popular employers. Growing up, the Indian Point nuclear power plant was something we were all aware of. Our city would send us brochures or general information about what to do in case of an emergency. The power plant closed in April of last year.
Community Needs and Concerns

East Harlem is a cultural hub for latin food, and salsa music. Visitors can often see messaging in both Spanish and English and hear members speaking both languages in tandem. The Upper East Side similarly is filled with Kosher butcheries and synagogs.
Community Activities and Services
My community is made of young professionals and families. Members of my community have ample access to green spaces, schools, healthcare and a variety of fresh food options, most of these resources being within 20-30min walking.
Economic or Environmental Interests
My community is filled with working families and young professionals. Most people commute to work, either downtown or further uptown, accessing the Q or 4/5/6. In the morning, families are seen walking students to school and then heading to work themselves. Access to green spaces is a huge interest for most members of my community, folks are often seen partaking/volunteering at the 92nd st farmers markets on Sundays, or during community cleanups.
Community Needs and Concerns
Map drawers should be aware of the economic differences between these bordering communities. The median household income for East Harlem was $34,000 in 2019, whereas the UES's median household income was between $100-250,000. These stark differences have resulted in gentrification occurring in median communities (Yorkville) and the slow displacement of East Harlem residents.

Cultural or Historical Interests
The neighborhood does not have a general shared cultural or historical interest. There is a mixture of different religious and ethnic groups. The neighborhood has only existed for approximately 25 years, as that was when the townhouses were built.
Community Activities and Services
The community is a relatively isolated neighborhood that is next to the intersection between two important roads. There is not a natural gathering point for the community in the neighborhood beyond the nearby playground and clubhouse maintained by the homeowners association for the neighborhood. It is geographically far away from any natural gathering point, such as a town center or church.
Economic or Environmental Interests
The neighborhood is located near a series of forests that have been maintained for years. Recently, they have been cut down and reduced to build a new storage facility. As a result, there is increasing concern that storms can flood the lower parts of our neighborhood.
Community Needs and Concerns
The community is relatively isolated from other neighborhoods. Despite the lack of shared cultural or ethnic ties, it is a singular community that should be kept together simply due to the geography and lack of a cultural plurality in the neighborhood.

Cultural or Historical Interests
One great strength of this community is its socioeconomic diversity, which mirrors that of greater NYC in many important respects (based on data from the NYC Population FactFinder). In terms of race/ethnicity the Latino and Black populations are slightly higher and the White and Asian populations slightly lower than citywide, but the overall racial/ethnic mix is quite similar to that of NYC as a whole. Economically, the community encompasses residents from public housing to luxury housing coexisting in close proximity. Although NYC is remarkably diverse it is also highly segregated by race and class, and it's rare to find communities like mine that embody the great diversity of NYC!
Community Activities and Services
My community benefits from many vibrant parks and public spaces. The most notable are Central Park and Morningside Park, but there are also numerous well-designed and generally well-maintained playgrounds, schoolyards, and recreation areas. It's a high-density area with many local shops and a lively street life, and it's well served with multiple bus and subway lines. All in all the community fits closely with Jane Jacobs's image of a healthy urban neighborhood, and a range of lively public spaces helps bring together a diverse population of varied racial/ethnic and class backgrounds.
Economic or Environmental Interests
The economics of the community mirror the diversity of NYC, spanning everything from public housing to luxury condos and low-wage service workers to highly paid professionals. The median household income is 10% below the citywide median and the poverty level is one-third higher than NYC, but there is also a greater percentage of high-income households due to higher proportions of workers in professions, education, social/health services, and the arts. Most of the housing stock was built before 1970 and more than 80% is rental. As in greater NYC nearly half of renters are officially 'rent burdened' (paying more than 30% of income for housing), which highlights a key economic concern.
Community Needs and Concerns
The greatest concern of my community is maintaining its rich diversity against the forces of gentrification. Most importantly this requires greater protections for/investments in affordable housing and affordable commercial spaces to support vulnerable residents and local businesses. The area extending from Frederick Douglass Circle along Central Park West and North is a prime target for further gentrification, but because the community spans parts of the Upper West Side and Harlem it has previously been split into different City Council districts. Instead, it should be unified in a single district (preferably without a White majority) to protect its rare and fragile diversity!

There are only 5 or so crosstown streets connecting us to Central Harlem and points east (110th St, 125th Street, 126th Street, 141st Street, and 145th Street). Our housing is almost all pre-war and is or was rent-regulated. Many of us live in HDFC co-operatives.

Most people in my community are practicing Jews, so many of us gather at one of the two main Bukharian Jews synagogues, Beth Gavriel synagogue on 108th street in Rego Park and the Bukharian Jewish Community Center on 71st avenue in Forest Hills. During days off and after school hours many of the community members gather at the Annadale Playground and Yellowstone park, which are staple parks of the community. Lincoln Square Community

Cultural or Historical Interests
Lincoln Square consists primarily of white population with a few representatives of other races and ethnicities. However, the community that resides within the Lincoln Square has been severely affected by gentrification throughout the 20th century. Around 70 years ago, the residents of this area were preeminently African American, Afro-Caribbean, and Puerto-Rican. The neighborhood, known as San Juan Hills, was the epicenter of low-income immigrants who lived in horrible conditions. The slums of San Juan Hills were demolished during the “urban renewal”, a reconstruction project led by Robert Moses with a goal to build better housing, roads, and, ultimately, the Lincoln Center.
Community Activities and Services
The community of Lincoln Square is centered around the Lincoln Center, one of the world’s most famous performing arts centers, which serves as the focal point for cultural activity within the neighborhood. Since Lincoln Square is a very densely populated neighborhood, most of its residents refer walking or taking a CitiBike as primary means of transportation. However, there are still many public transport options available in the area, such as local buses (M7, M11, M12, M104, M20, M66, M72) or subway (Columbus Circle and 66th St stations).
Economic or Environmental Interests
Since the community of Lincoln Square is centered around the Lincoln Center, many residents are employed in the media and arts. Common occupations unite the residents of the neighborhood, creating a friendly open space for meeting people with similar interests.
Community Needs and Concerns
Though Lincoln Square seems to be an ideal place to live, yet the community still faces a few concerns that need to be resolved. One of such concerns is ridiculously expensive rent. Another problem of the community is harsh environment for small local businesses. On top of that, since so many people live in the area, the neighborhood faces serious environmental issues. According to King L et al (2015), “In the Upper West Side, levels of PM2.5, the most harmful air pollutant, are 10.3 micrograms per cubic meter, compared with 10.7 in Manhattan and 8.6 citywide."

Cultural or Historical Interests
The whole of Van Nest was established in late 1800's and early 1900's around the Morris Park Race Track's entrance in Van Nest close to the Van Nest Train Station. Also the Yemeni Muslim Community is split with the border running up Wallace Avenue.
Community Activities and Services
My community of Van Nest is part of Community Board 11, part of the 49th Precinct. Van Nest is a low density community and myself with two other Van Nest residents in CD15 are part of CB11 representing issues relevant to our Van Nest community on CB11 and the 49th Precinct.
Economic or Environmental Interests
The residents of Van Nest are either employed in Manhattan or at the hospitals in City Council 13 of Montefiore or Jacobi.
Community Needs and Concerns
The families and especially our children are extremely underserved. The young and teens of both the Van Nest and Morris Park communities have no community center to offer after school, sports, cultural, summer camp programs. They have no outlet but to get into trouble or swept up by drug dealers. It has been this way for decades. This burden was partially shared with the parochial schools that were closed 15 years ago. We are owed 3,000 middle school seats and now 85% of our children must be bussed out of our community to go to middle school. Van Nest lost its library in a political battle in 1998. It was never replaced. We lost our post office in 2003.

Cultural or Historical Interests
This community is largely comprised of white and Asian residents. The Jewish community in commercial Rego Park is particularly prominent, though there is a church within the community as well.
Community Activities and Services
Rego Center features various department stores, such as Burlington, Ikea, TJ Maxx, and Marshall’s, as well as supermarkets and wholesale stores, such as Aldi and Costco. A few blocks down is Queens Center Mall, which has a wide variety of shops, including but not limited to Express, the Apple Store, Sephora, Gap, Victoria’s Secret, and Foot Locker. Queens Center Mall and Rego Center are hubs for activity within the community; not only do they provide residents with resources such as food, clothing, and groceries, but these are also the main areas in which people of the community and neighborhood gather to socialize.
Economic or Environmental Interests
The residents of this neighborhood typically work white collar office jobs. Since the 63rd Drive-Rego Park and Woodhaven Boulevard subway stations are so conveniently located, residents who typically work office jobs in Manhattan are able to commute back and forth with ease, typically with no transfers.
Community Needs and Concerns
What makes commercial Rego Park so unique may be its lack of needs and concerns. This is a fairly affluent community comprised of middle class and upper middle class individuals. The residents of commercial Rego Park have access to an abundance of resources.

Little Neck-Douglaston
CUNY Community Mapping Project
Reichl/Shaping NYC/QC HNRS 226
May 19, 2022
Population: 25262
transportation housing diversity education suburban
Cultural or Historical Interests
The community is mainly white and Asian as seen by multiple Asian stores, such as H-Mart, and bilingual advertising used in the area. However, the area is also at increasing risk of gentrification since the more affordable smaller homes are being demolished in favor of larger homes at exorbitant prices. Some smaller celebrities own property in the area which possibly contributed to the desire to make larger houses. Unfortunately, most of these houses increase in size at the cost of a backyard or large driveway area, making parking more difficult especially due to the amount of teachers in the area.
Community Activities and Services
My community is in school district 26 and is home to multiple different elementary schools and a middle school which all have positive ratings. Most students live in the area or do not commute very far. Older students enjoy eating at our local fast food places or eating at our famous “Joe’s Pizzeria” which is on the main street connecting all the major schools. There are a variety of churches, the largest being St. Anastasia which also hosts many community events such as the carnival and serves as the end point for our annual Memorial Day parade. There are also other churches which conduct mass in specific languages, such as in Korean. Has three bus routes and close proximity to the LIRR.
Economic or Environmental Interests
The community has good connections to both the city and Long Island making it a good middle-ground for commuters. There is no particular job that people do in this area however, due to Little Neck Bay, the area is known for various shellfish such as clams.
Community Needs and Concerns
Little Neck is closely associated with Douglaston and oftentimes the lines differentiating the two are blurred. Due to this, the community is often hyphenated as Little Neck-Douglaston, which I feel is an accurate name for the area. However, Queens Community District 11 combines the two with Bayside, Auburndale, East Flushing, Oakland Gardens, and Hollis Hills, creating a large area. I propose that Little Neck-Douglaston all the way until the Nassau County line be its own district due to its uniqueness: proximity to the water, local parks, access to public transit, and access to Long Island and Manhattan. The other areas share likeness only along Northern Boulevard where the Q12 runs.

Hillside is incredibly diverse with a majority being the Asian population, specifically South Asia. They are followed by the Hispanic Community as well as the African American Community. More than half of Hillside is Foreign born. The majority from South Central Asia along with a good amount from South America as well.
Community Activities and Services
Hillside is filled with small businesses as well as large fast food corporations. It is also a hub of transportation featuring: F train, Grand Central Parkway, Clearview Expressway, Q1, Q43, Q36, etc. Along the avenue there is also plenty of schools both public and private. For example, The Mary Louis Academy. Hillside is also home to Creedmoor Psychiatric Center.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Hillside's economy rests on the businesses that line its streets. However there are too many fast food places and not enough access to fresh groceries.
Community Needs and Concerns
Safety is a huge concern in the community. The area around the 179th street station is filled with liquor stores and bars making it an unsafe area after dark. Creedmoor Psychiatric Center is also a concern since the outpatient services there are underfunded and many residents aren't getting the help they need.

There is a large Korean Community in the area so there are a lot of stores appealing to the Korean community including a kimbab restaurant, two Korean Barbeque places, as well as a Korean supermarket. In the past there was a large Jewish community in the area but over the years that population has been dwindling. There are is also smaller ethnic communities like the Muslim and south asian communities as well as a small African American Community.
Community Activities and Services
1. People in my community socialize at various locations including the local library, some of the many NYC park and playgrounds, and various religious centers. The biggest area of socializing in the community is Alley Pond Park, a large NYC public park with an expansive running trail, baseball fields, a picnic area, and a playground. People also socialize at various elementary school playgrounds in the area to hang out or play basketball. There is also a Catholic Church called American Martyrs where the catholic community in the area attends, as well as a Jewish center.
Economic or Environmental Interests
3. A large portion of the community commutes to Manhattan for work, making the community reliant on the Queens express bus service as well as the other local bus lines that connect to the NYC subway system and the Long Island Railroad. The environmental concerns in the community are mostly to keep the parks and the streets clean. Also, since the community is made up of mostly apartment complexes most of the garbage in the area is consolidated to large dumpsters within the complexes that tend to overfill and leave trash blowing around on a windy day, concerning residents.
Community Needs and Concerns
4. Map drawers should know that a community of renters exist within this area and that this community is diverse economically and culturally and has its own needs separate from the rest of the area. Rising rents is a major concern for this community of renters. The need for better transportation is also a major concern of the community with many residents reliant on the MTA bus service to get to work. Also, crime is a growing concern among my community with a few instances of violent crime occurring in the past few months.

Cultural or Historical Interests
My community is made up of a latinx, roman catholic, working class majority and the most non-english language spoken there is Spanish. The community has been in the neighborhood since the 1970s and is affected by housing inequalities, the lack of quality education, poverty, a homelessness and mental health crisis, an increase of crimes, and poor air quality.
Community Activities and Services
My community is made up of people who go to the Holy Child Jesus Church. This church provides many services such as a food bank. There are also food distribution centers and many emergency shelters that help those who need an immediate place to stay, while reconnecting with housing. My community also has 19 diverse schools, two local libraries, three fire stations, one police station, and one hospital. It is located near forest park, the Richmond Hill War Memorial, and the Jackson Pond playground. Lastly, the J train and the Q56 allow residents to travel, interact with one another, and the public space around, strengthening residents' involvement and engagement within Richmond Hill.
Economic or Environmental Interests
My community is located near many retail stores such as restaurants, salons, clothing stores, e.t.c, which all partake in the economic growth of this community and even contributes to the rise of employment present. My community is also known as a transit hub. With this being said, the air is very polluted, which leads to a decrease in the health of the environment and its residents.
Community Needs and Concerns
This community needs to be included within a single district to maximize its political power. This is because although Latinx residents make up the majority and renters make up 45%, both their issues and concerns are overlooked. Therefore, they have shared policy concerns and social services that focus on tenant rights, temporary assistance, and homelessness. So, by gaining political power they can fully assist the overall wellbeing of the people and strengthen the community like never before.

Economic or Environmental Interests
My community is mostly comprised of Korean stores and businesses in which residents are employed either at restaurants or the numerous churches within the vicinity. Also, there are some residents that have white collar jobs and work at Korean pharmacies or the pediatrics.
Community Needs and Concerns

The people residing in Jamaica Hills are from various backgrounds. The people I come in most contacts with are South Asian. However, there are several black and Hispanic individuals living in the area as well. Since there are four schools located in the area, many of the people within the community are tied with their connection to these schools whether they, their kids, or someone they know went to the schools. Muslims in the area tend to gather on Fridays and Jamaica Muslim Center gets permission to block off JMC way( a street that has been recently established) in order to allow the Muslim community to gather. Most of the people are immigrants or children of immigrants.
Community Activities and Services
My community is made up of the people that reside in, shop at, and attend school in Jamaica Hills. Most people hang out in front of restaurants, near the religious buildings (Mosques/Churches), and the schools. There are also two playgrounds where most of the children play after school hours. There are a few urgent care locations and general doctors, dentists, physical therapists, and pharmacies located in jamaica hills. Transportation is abundant in this area since buses and trains are readily available.
Economic or Environmental Interests
My community is full of drivers and there is heavy traffic since it is located near Grand Central and connected to Hillside avenue. This raises concerns for air quality and general safety for pedestrians. Additionally, the pond located in the Captain Tilly Playground is heavily polluted. People are discouraged from interacting with it because of how dirty it is.
Community Needs and Concerns
The community needs some kind of regulation for the traffic that happens on hillside avenue. The traffic there is very heavy and unsafe for pedestrians because there's a double-parking issue in front of grocery stores without parking. Most people are from lower-income households, making the prices of food and general necessities unreasonable to expect the residents to pay. Social services that make basic necessities accessible would help residents who struggle to afford groceries and other needs. Education and job security are a concern for many parents in the area, a service that educates children and parents on how to succeed in school and work would be greatly beneficial to them.

Inter-Continental Community of East Tremont

Population: 46835

Cultural or Historical Interests
What cultural or historical interests define your community? Tremont Avenue was built early in the development of the area as a business route. Bronx Borough Hall, which was located in Tremont Park (previously known as "Old Borough Hall" Park) from 1897 to 1969, when it was dismantled, was a hub of civic activity in the area. Immigrants came into the neighborhood once the elevated train line was built, many fleeing the Lower East Side's congested tenements. Ethnic groups cycled through the neighborhood, following greater demographic swings in many other cities: initially, Italian and Irish immigrants, then Jews, and finally, African Americans and Hispanics after World War II.
Community Activities and Services
Access to transportation is the first and most significant service that defines my neighborhood. In my neighborhood, the Train 2 and 5 lines, as well as several buses, run. This is a significant benefit to the community, since it is a rather active one, with individuals going to work and school children going to school. There are a number of schools in the area that cater to both elementary and middle school students. The Bronx Zoo, which is close to East Tremont, is a fantastic spot for families to spend a day, especially during the summer.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Prior to the construction of the Cross Bronx Expressway, Tremont Park was a 15-acre open space and leisure area that was previously part of the larger Crotona Park to the south. Between 3rd and Arthur Avenues, it spans the full southern side of Tremont Avenue. The 3rd Avenue/Tremont Avenue rezoning, which intended to boost development possibilities along the Tremont Avenue commercial shopping corridor, rezoned sections of the corridor in 2010. The existing zoning allows for a wide range of building types, including entirely commercial structures as well as a combination of residential and business uses.
Community Needs and Concerns
Access to healthcare- Poor health care can result in unfavorable health consequences and more intense treatment, such as unnecessary hospitalizations. In East Tremont, about a quarter of residents do not have health insurance, and one out of every nine people goes without required medical treatment, which is close to the citywide figure. East Tremont has a greater rate of late or no prenatal treatment than the rest of the city. For a long time, the neighborhood has been afflicted by a variety of social issues connected with poverty, ranging from crime to drug addiction.

Community Activities and Services
People of the Albanian Community of Queens, usually gather and socialize in coffee shops, which is sort of a tradition originated in Albania. Gathering in coffee shops in the Albanian community is the equivalent of gathering and socializing in restaurants, parks, or churches for people in other communities. In addition, younger generations also socialize in parks, schools, libraries, beaches etc. In regard to accessing services, the Albanian community uses the same healthcare, transportation, and educational services as any other community in New York. The only distinction may be that people prefer to use cars as a mean of transportation rather than using public transport.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Most of first-generation Albanian-Americans are employed in jobs that require low level skills mainly because of the lack of education in the United States and the inability to speak the English language. Industries in which they are usually employed in are construction, food service, maintenance and janitorial services and transportation. Second generation Albanian-Americans are usually employed in jobs that require high level skills and usually a college degree such as financial services, healthcare, and education.
Community Needs and Concerns
I would say that is important to keep the Albanian community in the same district rather than separating it into multiple districts. This because people in this community tend to live close to each other in a way that is easier to support one another, especially first generation Albanian- Americans. Something that I assume my community needs is building a better and greater relationship with nearby communities.

What really defines us all is our shared disruption of our daily lives by the pandemic. 3rd and 4th years lived 2 years in an online setting and this is the first year sophomores actually attended college in person. A once in a 100 years pandemic disrupted everything and radically changed how we studied and worked. As Baruch is a predominantly business focused school, most students who attend there have a business mindset. Some of the surveyors didn’t tell me what job worked but some added extra details such as they work as managers, interns at big corporations, or work in financial offices. We share a culture of business and high-productivity in tandem with a commuter culture.
Community Activities and Services
One of the Key services defined by my community is that all the people I surveyed used the NYC Metro System. Its how they get around the city a majority of the time, and none of the participants owned any form of vehicular transportation. According to the Survey’s responses and the MTA system, Majority of the surveyees used the 4 train rather than the 6 with some outliers using the F train due to living in queens. Baruch community stores are defined by Fast food restaurants and food carts. People understand the commuter culture around the area so restaurants aren't a very defining feature. Students are always on the move and need places to get a quick bite to eat.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Many students at baruch college are interested in business so many people have jobs relating to business especially the seniors who are more career oriented. Students in the survey don’t have a job working in the school but work jobs in the Five boroughs. Even though according to the Rudin center, the area is ranked 14/177 for job access so there are plenty of jobs in the area. Students in internships are around the Zipcode but otherwise most students work elsewhere. But Many students do complain about the high-cost of living. While some students see their careers in the city, many want the education to get out and move to somewhere where there are better opportunities for living. NYC is one
Community Needs and Concerns
According to the students, crime is almost a negligible concern in baruch or around the campus. Many people don’t stick around too long and oftentimes go straight home after they are done with classes. According to the NYC Map of crime data, there are only 1.4 crimes per 1000 residents which is pretty average. Since Baruch is very busy traffic wise, and since the subways are nearby. Crimes don’t happen around baruch often or the students in the study felt no concern over it. What students do have concerns over are typically student problems, such as the courses they study. Seniors have it rough since they want to graduate and they are on a career track so they have to get everything in order

Cultural or Historical Interests
My community is very diverse with residents of Polish, German, Italian, Puerto Rican, Chinese descent. Ridgewood is also one of the oldest neighborhoods in all of New York City and is home to over 10 historic national districts. It is filled with brick rowhouse dwellings that are apart of the central Ridgewood historic district (one of the 10 historic national districts). These houses date back to the 1890s to the 1900s.
Community Activities and Services
My community is filled with many diverse eateries and shopping areas. From Italian to German to Dominican, there are restaurants scattered throughout the neighborhood that have been open for years. Myrtle Avenue also intersects into this community and has many small shops that sell clothing, shoes, hardware etc.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Ridgewood has many small businesses and family-owned stores. Many of the eateries around here are ran by families. There are a lot of blue collar workers that live in the area as well. A concern for this community is mainly problems with the housing in the area. There are many problems with utilities like heating and electricity due to the age of the houses.
Community Needs and Concerns
Ridgewood is right on the border of Queens and Brooklyn. There are a lot of cemeteries like All Faiths and Evergreen in and on the borders of Ridgewood. There are a lot of older citizens that live in this area and it has become hard for them to pay rent in their houses and get food. A lot of them benefit from senior centers and food pantries.

Cultural or Historical Interests
Many of the individuals in my neighborhood identify as either catholic or Muslim, especially many of the individuals I surveyed outside of my household. There are large communities of both religion in my neighborhood. Although they have many differing beliefs, it is very evident that my neighborhood is very united as well as interconnected. I say interconnected because there are many Islamic businesses, such as halal butcher shops that sell their products to many of the local supermarkets or grocery stores. This interdependence has brought my community closer to each other throughout the past few decades.
Community Activities and Services
In my community, there is a large church where many of the catholics in my neighborhood go to gather for religious purposes. As well as a Masjid that many of the muslims in my neighborhood go to for religious observation and to celebrate holy events or marriages, just as is done at my local church. There is also a large park called Highland Park where many people of all races and religions go to, there you can see birthday parties, picnics, and even sports games. Public transportation is all over East New York, just as healthcare services are.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Many of the individuals I had surveyed had said that they feel that pollution is the main concern. Individuals had complained that they are exposed to too much PM2.5 pollution from vehicles, especially since Jackie Robinson Expressway is very close to our neighborhood, as well as many two-lane expressways. Others had said that the dumping of garbage all over our neighborhood was also an environmental concern, because such dumping invites rats and other unwanted animals into the neighborhood. They also stated that they believe our community needs more job opportunities, they say that without such opportunities, the rising chance of our children entering a criminal lifestyle only increases.
Community Needs and Concerns
Many of the individuals I had surveyed had said that they believed the rising homeless presence in our neighborhood was a big concern, as well as the lack of job opportunities. Many had stated that the homeless presence in our neighborhood had made it very scary for their female loved ones to come home at night by themselves, a very reasonable concern that I too share. They had also said that the homeless presence had also brought with it the visible use of schedule 1 drugs in our streets. The lack of job opportunities was also a big concern, some respondents had said that some of their childhood friends had turned to drug dealing as a means of bringing in money for their family

A historical event that defines my community is the Holocaust. When asked “What is an historical event our community relates to, and why?”, all three people I interviewed immediately responded “Holocaust”. All three interviewers explained how they are descendants of Holocaust survivors and know that many fellow community members are descendants of holocaust survivors as well.
Community Activities and Services
After completing my interviews, I found that my community is defined by religious services on the sabbath. Many community members gather at the local synagogue on Friday nights and Saturday mornings to socialize and pray. Synagogue is often a place where members congregate and discuss political beliefs as well.
Economic or Environmental Interests
I found a common economic interests in my community is working jobs that make enough money to send children to private schools and maintain a religious Jewish lifestyle, which can be relatively expensive. All three people I interviewed explained their biggest expenses are sending their children to private Jewish schools. Two people I interviewed have four children and both told me they were paying upwards of $120,000 each year to educate their children. The third person I interviewed told me she receives financial aid from a Jewish private school that her child attends but it is still her largest expense. My community believes it is important to send their children to Jewish private schools
Community Needs and Concerns
In recent times some concerns my community has is safety and security. My local synagogue pays an extra fee to a security company so members can feel safe when attending synagogue. In fact, when asked “What are some security concerns you have in our community?” everyone answered anti-semitism. One interviewer explained how anti-Semitic attacks have gone up tremendously in the United States. She explained how just a couple of months ago there was a hostage situation at a synagogue in Texas. Another participant mentioned that last year there was a crazy man walking up and down her block screaming anti-Semitic tropes while wearing a Hitler shirt. Locations such as Flushing Meadow Park and the recreation center are in high use within my community since they are free and available for the public to use. In my interview, the one public space that my interviewees occasionally visited was Flushing Meadow Park and its night market present during the warmer weather. When speaking with the interviewees, they often frequent the recreation center since it is free for children as well as the multitude of sports activities and programs present. On top of the recreation center, during the warmer weather, they would visit public parks where they would use th
Economic or Environmental Interests
While Flushing hasn’t suffered from most natural disasters except flooding, it doesn’t disinvolve them from any environmental issues. One environmental concern is the pollution of Flushing’s waters that is caused by the water-front condominium being built there. Another environmental interest that defines my community is the large rise of buildings within Flushing as well as the prevalent traffic located on Main Street. Such developments and large traffic tend to pollute the city causing drastic environmental issues. As the population of Flushing continues to increase, the need for construction increases as well creating vast pollution with large areas of land being decimated to accommodate
Community Needs and Concerns
Since my community is like a small city, transportation is a high priority, but mass transit is a major issue, even more in the outskirts. The only train that stops in Flushing is the 7 train and it only reaches the forefront of Flushing making trekking deeper a more difficult and tedious task. When speaking with my interviewees, their main concern was the lack of mobility available to the public. They often complained about the frequent delays and the long wait time for buses to arrive. Another concern they brought up was also the lack of trains present in Flushing making traveling long distances in Flushing expensive since they have to use delivery services which are costly e

Crotona Park East Community
CUNY Community Mapping Project
Wilby_POL3000_Methods
March 31, 2022
Population: 36607
gentrification parks Latinx affordable construction
Cultural or Historical Interests
The demography of Crotona Park East is about 2/3rd hispanic and 1/3rd black with small but growing white and asian populations each around 1%. Along with the rest of the Bronx, it is also more religious on average than NYC as a whole; a larger percentage of its population identifying as christian. It is also younger on average than NYC as a whole, with roughly a quarter of the people living here being under the age of 18. Crotona Park East was the epicenter of the arson epidemic in the south bronx during the 70s which destroyed 80% of the housing market. The renewal project that followed created a slice of suburbia.
Community Activities and Services
As implied by the name of the neighborhood, Crotona Park is the most defining feature of Crotona Park East. That is the place you go to get away from people. Barbershops, bodegas, delis, hair salons, churches, pharmacies, and mechanics are the easiest businesses to find in the area. The primary method of public transit is the overground 2/5 train line along with seven bus routes that service the community, although that number is set to reduce to six given the MTA’s plan to streamline bus services across NYC.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Despite the rapid developments, the area still lags behind the rest of the city in several indicators: crime, poverty, education, unemployment, cleanliness, air pollution, health, obesity, substance abuse; all worse off than the average of NYC as a whole. What’s more, all of the city’s largest job centers lay at least an hour away via train ride. While substantial progress has been made in the past few decades on all those fronts, more work certainly remains to be done.
Community Needs and Concerns
The development of the area has largely been a success story, albeit one that if community and governmental leaders aren’t careful could displace the very people this community has served for decades. Gentrification comes with as many cons as it does pros, depending on who you ask, and there is no doubt that this community is gentrifying before our eyes. While Crotona Park East is riding the wave of progress, we need to make sure it doesn’t get swept up by the tide.

Cultural or Historical Interests
The most obvious cultural interest is Lincoln Center. The great thing about Lincoln Center is that, during the summer (even through the pandemic) that have tons of free and low cost outdoor events. I’ve often gone to the opera screenings and Midsummer Night Swing events and with friends from the community. This past summer, they also turned the public space into a “lawn” with faux grass and lots of seating. There were frequent live performances and little food stands. People of all ages used it, but I certainly saw a lot from my community of millennials taking advantage of it. Central Park & Riverside Park serve similar purposes as gathering places.
Community Activities and Services
Restaurants and local coffee places seem to be benefitting from expanded outdoor dining, which has been wonderful for those of us working from home. In fact, I doubt if there’s a local coffee chain on the UWS without at least one millennial on the laptop at all moments! That said, Broadway is struggling with lots of storefronts still empty from pandemic closures. This is something that is lamented in the news and by candidates in the 2021 local elections. Rents are likely not helping. Transportation, notably the lack of Select Buses and the patchy A/C/E service, make commuting difficult. This is a sore spot, especially as the UES has better transit, but the only crosstown SBS is at 79th St.
Economic or Environmental Interests
The UWS is, mainly, outside of major flood zones, but flooding after major rain storms and hurricanes is still a concern. Central Park stays puddly and muddy for ages, it seems. Rising housing costs of concern. Purchasing a home for a family is next to impossible and rents, which became briefly decent during the pandemic, are rising sharply. And new builds continue to open with rents and purchase prices well higher than established buildings. Affordable options are coming available for seniors, but I should note that while there are more seniors here than in the City as a whole, there are also more 20-45 year olds--at least for now.
Community Needs and Concerns
If you believe the local papers, crime is a major concern. Shoplifting and bands of illegal ATVs both featured prominently this week. I don’t think these are massive concerns for my community though. Looking at 311 complaints, there aren’t actually any major problems. Similarly the NYPD’s reporting data shows relatively few thefts in the past month, though they did show a small increase year over year. Rising rents (for housing and commercial space) are a more critical problem, making the community feel atomized and forcing us to move out of the area. Increasing affordable housing, as well as expanding affordable shopping options (esp for groceries), would be a boon to the community.

My community of interest is "Huntington", inside the larger town of Huntington, New York. The demographics of my community include a White non-Hispanic majority, with a large Latin American and a smaller yet also substantial African American population. My community has a long history because the Town of Huntington was founded in 1653. My community of interest of "Huntington" shall be defined as including the census-designated places of Huntington Bay, Halesite, Huntington Village, Huntington Station, and South Huntington.
Community Activities and Services
People in my community often go to the Walt Whitman Mall or the Huntington Village area for recreation. Driving is the number 1 dominant way that most people use to get around this suburban community.
Economic or Environmental Interests
A lot of people live and have employment in my same community. At the same time, there is also a substantial population of professionally employed "Huntington" residents who take the Long Island Railroad from Huntington and commute to work in NYC.
Community Needs and Concerns
The Huntington town government and the Suffolk County Government need to know that my community of interest needs to be distinguished from the other census-designated places that also form part of the larger Town of Huntington map. I feel that the constituents of "Huntington", defined as the previously mentioned 5 census designated places in the larger town of Huntington, have some very important political and socioeconomic interests that are ignored and or treated with downright hostility from the elected Town of Huntington government. The lack of Affordable rent and housing stock are issues that have existed for decades in "Huntington", yet the town government does not see this as a problem

Community Activities and Services
My community is often found socializing in shops, cafes, and recreational areas such as parks. The children usually gather in schools, libraries, and parks. The elderly are often found in parks on days when the weather is nice. There are many public transportation options in the community, both trains, and buses that take people from Ridgewood/Glendale to various parts of Queens, Brooklyn, and Manhattan. There are also many healthcare services in the area as well. Most of these are within walking access and are easy to access.
Economic or Environmental Interests
My community does not have a great employment rate. The unemployment rate sits at 8% which is twice the national average. Many residents have to take a car or public transportation to work because there are not a lot of good-paying jobs available. The jobs that residents do have are not high-paying ones. The median average income of the area is about $51,000 which is below the national median average.
Community Needs and Concerns

Cultural or Historical Interests
The cultural bonds of my community would be the fact that most of the people come from a different country and they were not born here. The majority of the people that I've met have immigrant parents and they speak more than one language.
Community Activities and Services
My community is made up of mostly young adults. Most of them are students, or people who have just graduated and they are doing internships. They use the metro as their main form of transportation and they socialize in nearby bars or cafes for gathering and socializing.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Since most of the people that I live with are students or newly grads, they're looking for jobs at restaurants and cafes to save up money. Since my neighborhood is midtown, there are a lot of restaurants and cafes which make it convenient for them to work near where they live. Cold weather affects the businesses in a way that they need less staff since they have no outside sitting available.
Community Needs and Concerns
I think that the need of my community, like any other, is to have a clean neighborhood. Moreover, I would think that people of the same interests would want more opportunities for them to socialize and make friends since most of the people move in alone and they have no one to talk to. Since there is a large portion of the female population, the community would want for the streets to be safe at night.

Community Activities and Services
Rural transportation is an ongoing problem. There is a lack of healthcare providers, resulting in long wait times & likely substandard care.
Economic or Environmental Interests
My community seems hung up on hopefully someday attracting more big businesses, rather than supporting existing businesses and entrepreneurs. There is a shortage of affordable housing- both family rentals and homes for first-time homebuyers, mainly because of renting to students and the rise of Air BnB & other short-term rentals (especially for renting to baseball camp families). There is very little support for first-time homebuyers. Lack of universal broadband access is still a problem, though great strides have been made.
Community Needs and Concerns
My community (especially neighboring Delaware County where I work) has tension between "locals" and folks recently moved upstate from NYC. We have an "angry white man" problem. We also suffer from lack of diversity in leadership, and a pool from which to find more diverse leaders.

Economic or Environmental Interests
My community, as I defined it above, are mostly students. We are all very stressed and very broke, but we're also busy learning about issues affecting the Binghamton community (environmentally, economically, socially, etc)
Community Needs and Concerns
My community depends on accessible services, such as affordable housing (off campus housing) etc. We're civically minded as a graduate program (MPA and MS/MA in Sustainability), so incorporating dimensions of equity into the expansion of social services is very important.

In other words, racial equity has never been a priority in USA & evidence to support it are contained in the U.S. Constitution & the Amendments. Federalism gives people power & the i opposed to be all the people, but due to institutional racism & systemic racism across multiple institutions, Blacks have been shut out of the American dream. Redistricting should be done in the U.S. House Dist. of Antonio Delegate, and while NY lost one seat, he has made a difference & his district should be maintained & enhanced to effect more racial equity in his district.

The community is middle class or poor, disinvested & redlined, which leads to both low home ownership rates, as well as low home values. This (-) impacts wealth creation & hampers the transfer of generational wealth. The community is also over policed, as police don’t solve crimes, they respond to them (detectives solve crimes), so flooding the community with boots on the ground does little long-term good when people are likely to be arrested, convicted & incarcerated (hurts families). The community needs equitable redistribution of their tax payments to government, so, when communities ask for government support, that is not a handout from government. It's a ROI of taxes paid.

Cultural or Historical Interests
Besides the Owego Historic District, the Village of Owego has a monthly ArtsWalk on the first Friday of each month, April-December. We have vibrant church communities in St Patrick's Catholic Church, the Historic Owego First Baptist Church (where John D. Rockefeller worshipped), St. Paul's Episcopal Church, the Owego Methodist Church and Owego Presbyterian Church. We have the Tioga County Fair in early August in Marvin Park.
Community Activities and Services
The Village of Owego Historic District is a community on the Riverbank of the Susquehanna River bordered by Front Street and Main Street in Downtown Owego. We have a commercial area that features many galleries, craft shops, restaurants and cafes and the Tioga County Historical Society. We have many beautiful historic houses, churches and public buildings (Tioga County Courthouse). Every year the Village sponsors Lights Along the River in December and StrawberryFest in June. We also have a Memorial Day parade and tribute to our veterans.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Owego's economy is linked to the Susquehanna Valley. In the 20th century, Owego was linked to IBM at the plant in Owego that is now part of the Lockheed Martin campus. High tech jobs at Lockheed Martin have been an economic anchor for the community, providing excellent jobs with good pay and benefits. Tourism is also an important part of Owego and the surrounding area's economy, including Tioga Downs in Nichols. Some agriculture, particularly dairy farming is still important.. Owego and its surroundings are also bedroom communities for both Binghamton/Tri-Cities and Ithaca.
Community Needs and Concerns
Owego need to be in the congressional and assembly districts that share its high-tech industries, tourism and the suburban connections to Broome and Tompkins Counties. People who live in Owego work in Binghamton and Ithaca. Many Owegeans work for the Binghamton University, Cornell and Ithaca College.

My community is in the center of Manhattan, but somewhat in between traditional neighborhoods, being south of Flatiron, east of Chelsea, and north of the West Village and East Village. We have our own unique cultural identity centered around Union Square Park and the many social and cultural happenings there throughout history.
Community Activities and Services
My community is centered around Union Square Park, which serves as an important communal resource. It is the location of a regular farmers' market and many other events that occur there, such as protests and gatherings, as well as have public services like playgrounds and green space. Parts of NYU and The New School are in my community. There are also a number of subway stations in my community, including the large 14 Street-Union Square station, the city's upkeep and development of which affects the area.
Economic or Environmental Interests
My community is impacted by rising costs of living, which threatens to push many residents out or make residing here more economical challenging. The maintenance of the Union Square green space, valuable in a dense urban environment, is also important.

My community needs more diversity. Many students from Wayne Central public schools graduate and go into law enforcement without having ever interacted with either the BIPOC or the LGBTQ community.

Cultural or Historical Interests
Elmont is a primarily Caribbean and West African community with a growing South Asian population, with the majority of the stores in the neighborhood reflecting these cultures.
Community Activities and Services
Most community activities and services in West Elmont occur at or around the school (e.g., the local park, the elementary schools, etc.) Most of these activities are accessed via walking or driving.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Elmont has many small businesses (e.g., restaurants, barbershops, corner stores, delis, etc.), so policies that help develop new and old small businesses are very important to us.
Community Needs and Concerns
Many citizens of Elmont work in nearby New York City, but there is a huge lack of accessible public transportation to the City, making it difficult to navigate between the nearby boroughs and Elmont.

Cultural or Historical Interests
For my immediate community, most of the residents want to make the building a better place to live. Many of the common values tend to address what they think could improve in order to reach this shared goal. A lot of the residents have been with the building for a while, and are really passionate about this. On the other hand, this is a bit harder to answer for the broader community. There are a few churches nearby, but I am actually unaware of what fosters a sense of belonging. There is a good
Community Activities and Services
People in the community tend to frequent restaurants and bars to socialize. This question is really interesting, because in terms of my immediate community I think of all the residents in the building. They tend to socialize in the lobby and take walks around the area. For the broader community, there are a lot of people who commute to work here but live elsewhere. Central Park is within walking distance, so quite a few people take their dogs or bike around during the weekend.
Economic or Environmental Interests
There are environmental concerns in terms of noise resulting from constant construction and traffic. Additionally, the area is close to major streets (Lexington and Park Ave, FDR Dr) so air quality is an additional factor. The East River is situated nearby and flood-prevention plans have been implemented to address this - though the design has been criticized for being insufficient.
Community Needs and Concerns
The community cares about the constant construction, which is normalized as a part of New York City. However, Midtown East was recently rezoned to allow for increased floor area of blocks. Combined with a strong market for real estate in the area, investors will most likely renovate or redevelop certain buildings - not to mention existing unused air rights. While I do not have a particular stance on this issue, I find it really interesting since COVID-19 has changed working conditions.

Cultural or Historical Interests
The 19th Ward Community Association, formed in 1965, is one of the oldest Neighborhood Associations in the country. The Association formed to fight racist real estate practices, such as blockbusting and redlining, while purposefully cultivating a neighborhood that is diverse with respect to age, race, and class.

Cultural or Historical Interests
It's my understanding that the needs of the 19th ward community have historically been underserved. I hope the community's restorative interests can be preserved to undo the decades of red lining that lead to destructive outcomes. The 19th ward community association meets to organize there. There is a pioneer cemetery, which is a historic landmark, that we are seeking to restore into a community garden and tourist destination with guided tours. Representatives who care about this are important.
Community Activities and Services
My community is a mix of native Rochesterians and University of Rochester student rentals. Diverse student groups meet and gather off campus to further their clubs and social circles, and bring patronage to local business. We meet and greet neighbors who have lived in the area for many years.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Lead piping has been major injustice in my community. While extensive surveying and testing has been done to map and remove these hazards, I don't believe lead's presence can be ruled out. Piping may still exist inside homes or between street-level mains and individual houses. I hope all residents have access to prospecting for these pipes, and easy access to lead levels blood testing.
Community Needs and Concerns
The 19th ward and it's composition is constantly under threat. As the university seeks to expand it's influence, increasing swaths of the ward are converted to student rentals. With this growth in University assets comes heavyhanded protection. UR president shot down a measure to arm off campus police only after strong student backlash. A community housing center, the Plymouth Gardens, is being eyed by the University for conversion into student housing. Residents are facing pressure to move out.

When the area had train service from NYC, it served as a health destination for TB, as well as attracting tourists. Farmers sent goods to market. It became the Borscht Belt with resorts being served by the locals. These transformed to Buddha and Yoga resorts, and then transformed to Orthodox camps. In 1969 it hosted the Woodstock festival, but because of the name, the area was never able to capitalize. Bethel Woods performing arts center was built on the site of the festival.
Community Activities and Services
Outdoor recreation is paramount being close to the Catskill Park and the Delaware River. Hiking, canoeing, fishing. The area is predominantly farm land. Villages are small. Transport is primarily cars, although a bus service was introduced last year to service the larger towns. Social activities are hosted by Volunteer Fire Departments, small towns, the county's tourism agency, and one of the state's largest performing arts centers: Bethel Woods.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Agriculture and small dairy farms is the predominant industry. It has been struggling and many have recently gone bankrupt. Laws are in place to protect the land but not the farmer. Environmentalist are loud, protecting the Catskill forest and the Delaware River. The area is split socially and economically between "locals" and "2nd homeowners." While the first is reliant on the second for second jobs such as maintenance, carpentry and retail sales, there is little other interaction.
Community Needs and Concerns
Protection of the land is paramount to the community - for agricultural use and recreational use The area is split politically between "locals" who tend to be conservative, vote Republican, and the "2nd Homeowners" who are from NYC, lean liberal and don't vote locally. The pandemic saw many 2nd homeowners embrace their local home and have shifted their primary residence to the area. This could have a strong impact on local elections.

It's a very international area given the UN. There is a large Japanese community with the Japan Society, Armenian with St. Vartan's Church, and focal points for Norwegians, Nigerians, and many other countries. The shared history is pretty limited since it feels pretty transient. Used to be a home for slaughterhouses. Tudor City is nice, with few windows facing the East River. Ford Foundation beautiful with interior gardens.
Community Activities and Services
My community is located near Grand Central, the United Nations, and NYU Hospital. We are near the Ferry at 34th St. A lot of protests take place here, in front of embassies and the Governor's NYC address. Great local public transportation. Near FDR making it easier to leave midtown, but traffic is busy. No parking pretty much.
Economic or Environmental Interests
To the south, more Murray Hill, it's more middle class. Most of Turtle Bay is also pretty middle class, but there are a number of more expensive apartment buildings that bring in richer and often less community oriented residents. There are few parks, but Dag Hammerskjold Plaza is a focal point with a Wed. farmers market, Tudor City, and playgrounds at St. Vartan's and 42nd and East River. The UN blocks egress to the river. Before 9/11 the UN park was open to the public but now it is a fortress
Community Needs and Concerns
We could use more parks, places to make the place feel like a community. Better bikeways, although that situation has been improving.

Community Activities and Services
There are multiple colleges and a university available within driving distance. There are 2 lakes, a river and multiple places of worship within driving distance. There is no public transportation. The local library is excellent and there are many parks in my community.
Community Needs and Concerns
My community has been gerrymandered and the current district lines need to be reevaluated. The lines have been based on political affiliation.

There are many performance-related institutions--the opera, the museums, a winter and summer concert series, choral groups, a popular film festival in November. The Cooperstown Graduate program brings graduate students to our community from around the country.
Community Activities and Services
The elementary and secondary school buildings for the district are in the village. The lake, the museums, the Clark Sports Center, the Glimmerglass opera, art venues, and the churches bring the village together. The largest employer is Bassett Healthcare. It's a walking village; services are accessible by walking from all parts of the village. For those living outside the village, getting to these places requires a car. Buses run from the village to the nearest city.
Economic or Environmental Interests
My community sits on beautiful Lake Otsego, the headwaters of the Susquehanna River. What happens on that lake or to the lake will eventually flow into the Chesapeake Bay. It is a place of natural beauty, a source of recreation, and an economic engine for the area. the lake is the drinking water source for the village. It's expensive to keep the water clean as it flows back into the river.
Community Needs and Concerns
Housing is difficult for moderate income families as many of the houses are owned by seasonal residents. Rental units are in great demand since many homes are only rented in the summer. Owners can charge more for that season than for a whole year's lease.

Brooklyn college is nearby and could be considered in the neighborhood, and for this mapping, I have included it. In addition there are a number of storefront and more traditional churches, mosques and synagogues to serve this diverse community of South Asian, Hispanic, Haitian, West-Indian immigrants and long-time Brooklyn residents.
Community Activities and Services
There are several store streets in this residential neighborhood. Most are small independent stores or franchises of larger supermarkets as well as pharmacy chains and a few independent pharmacies. Flatbush Development Corporation, People in Need and Pakistani-Amarican Youth Services are nonprofits serving the community.
Economic or Environmental Interests
My community is centered around an express subway stop at Newkirk Plaza which provides convenient transport to Midtown Manhattan as well as to public swimming beaches. The Plaza is a pedestrian shopping street adjacent to the station. Residents span the economic spectrum from solid middle-class homeowners and apartment dwellers, working poor, to marginally employed and food- and housing-insecure residents.
Community Needs and Concerns
The good housing stock has led to an influx of more affluent homeowners over the past 10 or so years. This has improved the commercial activity of the neighborhood, but also placed much of the housing out of the reach of some long-term residents.

From my personal experience, having a car is relatively ubiquitous, so our family travels to Long Island for most shopping, as driving in the city is impractical at best. Younger people, among my peers, usually travel into the city for leisure.
Community Activities and Services
Healthcare and education services are relatively ubiquitous in my community, as it’s a relatively urban and somewhat suburban area. Furthermore, while NYC’s MTA is not the most reliable service, it’s fairly good in terms of affordability and especially incredible in working 24/7 in most areas of the city
Economic or Environmental Interests
Most of the population works either in the vicinity - at restaurants/cafes or in retail, however a good chunk travels into Manhattan/Downtown Brooklyn construction sites and the various navy yards for work - I believe a majority of my neighbors are trade workers.
Community Needs and Concerns
Since the beginning of the pandemic, I've witnessed numerous decades old small mom 'n pop shops be closed due to a lack of business - I believe this issue can be easily resolved with government funding and maybe encouragement of the local population to frequent nearby stores by discounting goods - which would only be possible with government subsidies.
