Because I lived by the beach, tourism is a really important industry in my community. Our economy hosts a lot of small businesses that are especially active around the summer. The hospital/medical system as well as big companies like GE and PPD hire a lot of people in my town. I would categorize the majority of my community as middle-class, and the types of neighborhoods are pretty suburban.

Cultural or Historical Interests
Cherokee History, Civil War history, iconic blue ridge mountain parkway, all are in this area.
Community Activities and Services
The area I'm speaking about historically has a lot of farming and a lot of tourism because of the natural beauty of the forests and the mountains. Recently developers have been gobbling up land for housing developments. I'm concerned about farming and forests continuing in NC. In particular, there is a lot of interest in regenerative farming in this area that needs to be supported and represented in Congress and the Legislature. The forests are important for air quality and beauty.
Economic or Environmental Interests
The importance of regenerative farming practices is critical to the economy, the food supply, and farm productivity. In addition, regenerative farming sequesters carbon in the soil, removing it from the environment where it is causing global warming. The trees of the Earth, that are so plentiful in this area, are the lungs of the planet. These interests need to be represented in the state and national halls of politics.
Community Needs and Concerns
The gobbling up of farmland for housing developments is concerning.

Cultural or Historical Interests
There are a large number of AAPI residents in the area, largely due to our proximity to RTP and high tech jobs. There are several large houses of worship that serve many of these communities. My community is very racially and culturally diverse. Most residents here moved here from somewhere else and came for lower housing prices and good jobs.
Community Activities and Services
My community visits the West Regional Library or Morrisville Community Library. We use parks such as Morrisville Community Park and use the Hatcher Creek and Crabtree Creek Greenway system and enjoy the Morrisville Fitness and Aquatic Center for recreation and fitness. We are just now getting some public transportation options in the area, but most people are dependent on cars. We shop at Park West Village shopping center and other nearby shopping centers. There are nearby Urgent Care centers that are part of the local hospital systems, but we do not have a full hospital in our community. We have community events in the nearby park and the Town Hall complex.
Economic or Environmental Interests
We are located immediately next to RTP, where thousands of high-tech jobs are centered and more to come. Several creeks runt through our community, which feed into larger bodies of water including the already polluted Lake Crabtree and nearby Umstead State Park. It is imperative that we protect these watersheds. Our proximity to RDU Airport is also an environmental concern.
Community Needs and Concerns
We keep getting shifted back and forth between legislative districts, especially the NC House. Morrisville is split into more than one House district, which dilutes our voice in the state house. It causes confusion and frustration for residents to being shifted so often. The part of Morrisville I live in is built out and no more large developments can be built here, but we are still affected by the rapid growth on the other end of town. We need additional schools and infrastructure improvements to sustain this rapid growth. Our interests are closely intertwined with Cary because we live so close to the border. Many schools in the area are capped.

Additionally, many new high-tech companies are moving into the area (Apple, Amazon) forcing housing prices to jump up by leaps and bounds. Economic or Environmental Interests
My community is one of rapid growth and development. With that comes gentrification, development of apartment and condominium complexes, lack of ground cover, and stresses on infrastructure, parking issues, and need for public transportation. The heat index for our area will rise and affect the health of people with asthma, the elderly, the poor, and the very young. We need a strong, reliable electric grid and more public transportation.
Community Needs and Concerns
My district, district 4, extends to the North Carolina, Virginia border and includes a lot of rural area. It clearly does not represent the needs of downtown Durham and needs to be drawn with other more populous areas so that our concerns about growth and development, infrastructure and climate change are met.

Cultural or Historical Interests
We are part of the Old Town and Bethabara historical areas, which are the earliest settlements in the city. There's a very nice preservation area (Old Bethabara) in the district, although it could be improved with more green space. I believe the Latinx members of the community enjoy certain cultural bonds, and the university students congregate around the shared experience of being college students. Otherwise, I believe a lot of bonds are shared by common religious experience.
Community Activities and Services
Old Bethabara has some cultural and historic activities each year, and that draws people from across the city. The other activities are probably centered around university and professional sports events. There is not a well-developed public transit system in the city, although I do see a couple of routes that run through this district. There are a LOT of grocery stores and oil-change places, restaurants (fast food and low to mid-range expense) that include ethnic cuisine - Thai, Indian, Mexican.
Economic or Environmental Interests
We have a number of people employed by either Baptist Medical Center, Novant Medical Center, or smaller businesses (retail or utility concerns). There has been a great deal of development in the past few years, and that has resulted in removal of large numbers of old-growth trees and more paving. In turn, there has been a great need for containment of rainwater runoff, and that has pushed drainage expansion onto the Bethabara Nature Trail in my area. We have also lost power farily often often during severe thunderstorms.
Community Needs and Concerns
We are somewhat of a cultural hybrid - young upper/upper-middle class university students who are from all over the world; university staff who may be older but also may international; older and lower/working class class locals, including latinx members. I would like to see representation that focuses on the more permanent residents of the district, possibly splitting this district so that working class members align with similar communities closer to Shattalon Drive, or farther down Reynolda Road and the Old Town Community.

Community Needs and Concerns
Public transportation service is not good. While the buses are clean and well maintained, and the city is buying electric buses; the schedules are terrible, and it can take hours to go anywhere by bus. Community directors at El Centro, a community advocacy group in Hendersonville NC have identified a minimum of 12,000 Hispanic residents in the area. Many work in agriculture and construction; some are undocumented, but many are legal residents and citizens who vote. These groups should be represented fairly and should not be split from each other. The Hispanic population is significant in Henderson County and represent hard working, skilled residents who deserve fair representation and a repeal of 287(g).
Community Needs and Concerns
The farming community in Henderson County, NC require assistance with healthcare, affordable housing, voting rights (many are afraid to vote, especially first time voters who are legal citizens). Merrick-Moore Elementary School serves community. Started as a high school, one of 2 Black high schools in Durham, named for 2 business magnates in Durham. Community leaders lobbied to have the school built in the community and was the namesake. School offered adult education classes at night to community members who had not had access to high school in their youth. Mt. Zoar Baptist Church, 160 year old church that combines with the school to form the nucleus of the community.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Community has not been invested in by the city despite property taxes going up (even above the county average). I feel personally that there should be a way for new development taxes to offset the taxes of people who have lived here forever. Community is buffered by trees but sits in a largely industrial area. If developers cut down trees that will impact air quality, health, etc. Lots of natural springs mean flooding issues that can cause mold, flooding, etc.
Community Needs and Concerns

Community Activities and Services
I live in Carolina Arbors, an active adult (55+) community. We shop in Brier Creek, many of our healthcare providers are in Brier Creek. I belong to St Francis of Assisi Parish in Raleigh. We frequent Umstead State Park and Falls Lake Recreation Area. Our local library in East Branch in Durham. We do volunteer with local schools but do not have any school age kids in our community.
Economic or Environmental Interests
Our part of Durham County is "semi-rural". We are concerned with lack of infrastructure and the environmental impact of these new development.
Community Needs and Concerns
We are part of Ward 2, but our councilman has a different set of interests than we do. I am concerned about over-development in our area. We were told that even though we are in Ward 2, our councilman feels that he is elected citywide. Politically our area is mixed from progressive to libertarian with a lot of UNA. REP voters are frustrated that only DEMs can win in city, state and US election. UNAs are frustrated with an overly overly progressive agenda.
